Comparative study on high temperature deformation behavior and processing maps of Mg-4Zn-1RE-0.5Zr alloy with and without in-situ sub-micron sized TiB2 reinforcement

Mg-4Zn-1RE-0.5Zr (ZE41) Mg alloy is extensively used in the aerospace and automobile *** order to improve the applicability and performance,this alloy was engineered with in-situ Ti B2reinforcement to form Ti B2/ZE41 *** high temperature deformation behavior and manufacturability of the newly developed Ti B2/ZE41 composite and the parent ZE41 Mg alloy were studied via establishing constitutive modeling of flow stress,deformation activation energy and processing map over a temperature range of 250℃-450℃ and strain rate range of 0.001 s-1-10 *** predicted flow stress behavior of both materials were found to be well consistent with the experimental values.A significant improvement in activation energy was found in Ti B2/ZE41 composite (171.54 k J/mol) as compared to the ZE41 alloy (148.15 k J/mol) due to the dispersed strengthening of in-situ Ti *** processing maps were developed via dynamic material modeling.A wider workability domain and higher peak efficiency (45%) were observed in Ti B2/ZE41 composite as compared to ZE41 alloy (41%).The Dynamic recrystallization is found to be the dominating deformation mechanism for both materials;however,particle stimulated nucleation was found to be an additional mode of deformation in Ti B2/ZE41 *** twinning and stress induced cracks were observed in both the materials at low temperature and high strain rate.A narrow range of instability zone is found in the present Ti B2/ZE41 composite among the existing published literature on Mg based *** detailed microstructural characterization was carried out in both workability and instability domains to establish the governing deformation mechanisms.

Synthesis and Characterization of Bio-based Epoxy Blends from Renewable Resource Based Epoxidized Soybean Oil as Reactive Diluent

A novel bioresin, epoxidized soybean oil was synthesized by in situ method and was characterized employing FTIR and NMR. The bioresin was blended with epoxy（DGEBA） at different ratios as reactive diluents for improved processibility and toughened nature. The composition with 20 wt% bioresin exhibited improved impact strength to the tune of 60% as compared to virgin epoxy. Fracture toughness parameters critical stress intensity factor（kIC） and critical strain energy release rate（GIC） were evaluated using single edge notch bending test and demonstrated superior enhancement in toughness. Dynamic mechanical, thermal, thermo mechanical and fracture morphological analyses have been studied for bio-based epoxy blends. Curing kinetics has been evaluated through DSC analysis to investigate the effect of bioresin on cross-linking reaction of neat epoxy with triethylenetetramine as curing agent.

Evaluation of particle packing models by comparing with published test results

The existing particle packing density models each with two or more parameters accounting for certain particle interactions （the loosening effect parameter, wall effect parameter, wedging effect parameter, and compaction index, denoted by a, b, c, and k, respectively） may be classified into the 2-parameter model （with a and b incorporated）, the compressible model （with a, b, and 1（incorporated）, and the 3- parameter model （with a, b, and c incorporated）. This paper evaluates these models by comparing their respective packing density predictions with the test results published in the literature. It was found that their accuracy varies with both the size ratio and volumetric fractions of the binary mix. In general, when the size ratio is larger than 0.65, all the packing models are sufficiently accurate. However, when the size ratio is smaller than 0.65, some of them become inaccurate and the errors tend to be larger at around the volumetric fractions giving maximum packing density. Relatively, the 3-parameter model is the most accurate and widely applicable.

Behavior of an indigenously fabricated transferred arc plasma furnace for smelting studies

The utilization of industrial solid waste for metal recovery requires high-temperature tools due to the presence of silica and alumina, which is reducible at high temperature. In a plasma arc furnace, transferred arc plasma furnace（TAP） can meet all requirements, but the disadvantage of this technology is the high cost. For performing experiments in the laboratory, the TAP was fabricated indigenously in a laboratory based on the different inputs provided in the literature for the furnace design and fabrication. The observed parameters such as arc length, energy consumption, graphite electrode consumption, noise level as well as lining erosion were characterized for this fabricated furnace. The nitrogen plasma increased by around 200 k（200 ℃） melt temperature and noise levels decreased by ~10 d B compared to a normal *** plasma offered 100 k（100 ℃） higher melt temperature with ~5 d B higher sound level than nitrogen plasma. Nitrogen plasma arc melting showed lower electrode and energy consumption than normal arc melting, whereas hydrogen plasma showed lower energy consumption and higher electrode consumption in comparison to nitrogen plasma. The higher plasma arc temperature resulted in a shorter meltdown time than normal arc with smoother arcing. Hydrogen plasma permitted more heats, reduced meltdown time, and lower energy consumption, but with increased graphite consumption and crucible wear. The present study showed that the fabricated arc plasma is better than the normal arc furnace with respect to temperature generation, energy consumption, and environmental friendliness. Therefore, it could be used effectively for smelting-reduction studies.

Evaluation of flocculation characteristics of kaolinite dispersion system using guar gum:A green flocculant

This paper reports the systematic investigation on the flocculation,sedimentation and consolidation characteristics of kaolinite using guar gum as a green ***-situ flocculation behavior of kaolinite at various pH,guar gum dosages,and ionic strength were studied using a light scattering *** effect of these parameters on the settling rate,solid consolidation,and supernatant liquid clarity was *** morphology of kaolinite and flocculated kaolinite aggregates were analyzed using *** morphology studies suggest that it is poorly crystalline with multiple steps on edge,broken edge;laminar with high aspect ratio and have rough basal *** complex irregularity on the basal surface and the presence of multiple steps in the edges,broken edges(hydroxyl groups)have facilitated the guar gum *** isoelectric point of kaolinite is pH *** pH,ionic strength and flocculant dosage have a significant effect on the kaolinite settling *** guar gum has exhibited excellent turbidity removal efficiency at pH *** turbidity removal is inefficient at pH ***,guar gum has shown high turbidity removal with 80%transmission at pH 10 in the presence of a kNO3 electrolyte.

Poly（methyl methacrylate）/soy protein （PMMA/SP） composites were prepared by emulsion polymerization method using potassium persulphate （kPS） as the radical initiator. The interaction of soy protein with PMMA was evidenced by Fourier transformed infrared （FTIR） spectroscopy. The structure of PMMA/SP composite： was investigated by X-ray diffraction （XRD） study and scanning electron microscopy （SEM）. The thermal properties of soy protein and PMMA/SP composites were compared with soy protein and virgin PMMA sample. PMMA/SP composites were found to be flame retardant materials from the measurement of limiting oxygen index （LOI） of samples. The oxygen permeability of PMMA/SP composites was substantially decreased as compared to virgin PMMA.

Characteristics of horizontal ground motion measures along principal directions

Ground motion records are often used to develop ground motion prediction equations （GMPEs） for a randomly oriented horizontal component, and to assess the principal directions of ground motions based on the Arias intensity tensor or the orientation of the major response axis. The former is needed for seismic hazard assessment, whereas the latter can be important for assessing structural responses under multi-directional excitations. However, a comprehensive investigation of the pseudo-spectral acceleration （PSA） and of GMPEs conditioned on different axes is currently lacking. This study investigates the principal directions of strong ground motions and their relation to the orientation of the major response axis, statistics of the PSA along the principal directions on the horizontal plane, and correlation of the PSA along the principal directions on the horizontal plane. For these, three sets of strong ground motion records, including intraplate California earthquakes, inslab Mexican earthquakes, and interface Mexican earthquakes, are used. The results indicate that one of the principal directions could be considered as quasi-vertical. By focusing on seismic excitations on the horizontal plane, the statistics of the angles between the major response axis and the major principal axis are obtained; GMPEs along the principal axes are provided and compared with those obtained for a randomly oriented horizontal component; and statistical analysis of residuals associated with GMPEs along the principal directions is carried out.

Influence of Various Parameters on Collapse Behaviour of Thin Cylinders

Axial compression experiments on as received aluminum tubes and tubes with wall thickness eccentricity incorporated by off centre machining showed that the eccentricity caused transition of their collapse mode from axisymmetric to diamond. The numerical simulation of the collapse phenomenon was undertaken using a static non-linear Finite Element Analysis in ANSYS, and results are found to compare well with the experimental load compression and energy absorption responses for axisymmetric concertina and non-axisymmetric diamond modes. Having validated the numerical model with experiments, it has been used to undertake a systematic study of the load - compression characteristics and collapse mode transitions of the tubes with varying eccentricities in wall thickness and boundary conditions, as well as the material properties.

Improvement in Production Yield of Hot-rolled Coil by Controlling Process Cobbles

The yield is dependent upon many factors,such as cobbles,total scrap generation,crop loss and scale *** appears that the huge quantity of scale is mainly responsible for the yield ***,by the correlation study,it reveals that the number of cobbles is the major contributor to the yield *** innovation lies in changing the focus of attacking the real problem by analysing the operating data which was not surfaced *** focus shifted from the furnace to the mill and the cobbles studied through the years *** the analysis proved to be helpful for the future prevention of the similar kind of *** internal target of bringing down the number of cobbles per month in single digit was *** also helped in improving the maintenance practice and reducing the amount of delays *** yield was improved by 0.93%.
