Transient thermo-mechanical analysis for bimorph soft robot based on thermally responsive liquid crystal elastomers

Thermally responsive liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) hold great promise in applications of soft robots and actuators because of the induced size and shape change with temperature. Experiments have successfully demonstrated that the LCE based bimorphs can be effective soft robots once integrated with soft sensors and thermal actuators. Here, we present an analytical transient thermo-mechanical model for a bimorph structure based soft robot, which consists of a strip of LCE and a thermal inert polymer actuated by an ultra-thin stretchable open-mesh shaped heater to mimic the unique locomotion behaviors of an inchworm. The coupled mechanical and thermal analysis based on the thermo-mechanical theory is carried out to underpin the transient bending behavior, and a systematic understanding is therefore achieved. The k.y analytical results reveal that the thick.ess and the modulus ratio of the LCE and the inert polymer layer dominate the transient bending deformation. The analytical results will not only render fundamental understanding of the actuation of bimorph structures, but also facilitate the rational design of soft robotics.

Therapeutic angiomyogenesis using human non-viral transduced VEGF<sub>165</sub>-myoblasts

This article reviews the scientific development of angiomyogenesis using VEGF165-myoblasts, a patented biotechnology platform in regenerative medicine associated with Human Myoblast Genome Therapy (HMGT), also k.own as Myoblast Transfer Therapy (MTT). VEGF165-myoblasts are the leading biologics for angiomyogenesis. This review also compares the safety and efficacy of VEGF165-myoblasts transduced using adenoviral vectors, nanoparticles or liposomes, in anticipation of their application in clinical trials in the near future. VEGF165-myoblasts are differentiated myogenic cells capable of extensive division, natural cell fusion, nucleus transfer, cell therapy and genome therapy. Following transplantation they survive, develop and function to revitalize degenerative myocardium in heart failure and ischemic cardiomyopathy animal studies. VEGF165-myoblasts are second generation products of HMGT/MTT which replenishes live cells and genetically repairs degenerating myofibers in Type II diabetes, muscular dystrophies, aging dysfunction and disfigurement. Myoblasts have also been used to enhance sk.n and muscle appearance in cosmetology. We envision that VEGF165-myoblasts will provide better outcome than their non-tranduced counterparts. Myoblasts are not stem cells. Their competitive advantages over stem cells are presented.

Enhancing IoT anomaly detection performance for federated learning

Federated Learning (FL) with mobile computing and the Internet of Things (IoT) is an effective cooperative learning approach. However, several technical challenges still need to be addressed. For instance, dividing the training process among several devices may impact the performance of Machine Learning (ML) algorithms, often significantly degrading prediction accuracy compared to centralized learning. One of the primary reasons for such performance degradation is that each device can access only a small fraction of data (that it generates), which limits the efficacy of the local ML model constructed on that device. The performance degradation could be exacerbated when the participating devices produce different classes of events, which is k.own as the class balance problem. Moreover, if the participating devices are of different types, each device may never observe the same types of events, which leads to the device heterogeneity problem. In this study, we investigate how data augmentation can be applied to address these challenges and improving detection performance in an anomaly detection task.using IoT datasets. Our extensive experimental results with three publicly accessible IoT datasets show the performance improvement of up to 22.9% with the approach of data augmentation, compared to the baseline (without relying on data augmentation). In particular, stratified random sampling and uniform random sampling show the best improvement in detection performance with only a modest increase in computation time, whereas the data augmentation scheme using Generative Adversarial Network. is the most time-consuming with limited performance benefits.

The full energy distribution of back.cattered electrons from the elastic peak.do wn to the true-secondary electron peak.for heavy metals, Ta, W, Pt and Au, in Au ger electron spectroscopy in the EN(E) mode has been studied with a Monte Carlo simulation method, which includes cascade-secondary-electron production. The sim ulation model is based on the use of a dielectric function for describing inelas tic scattering and secondary excitation, and on the use of Mott cross sections f or elastic scattering. A systematic comparison between the calculated and experi mental spectra measured with a cylindrical mirror analyzer has been made for pri mary energies ranging from 1 to 5k.V. Excellent agreement was obtained for these heavy metals on the back.cattering back.round at primary energies in the k.V re gion. A significant contribution of cascade secondary electrons to the measured spectra on the low-energy side was found.

Existence results for degenerate p(x)-Laplace equations with Leray-Lions type operators

We show the existence and multiplicity of solutions to degenerate p(x)-Laplace equations with Leray-Lions type operators using direct methods and critical point theories in Calculus of Variations and prove the uniqueness and nonnegativeness of solutions when the principal operator is monotone and the nonlinearity is nonincreasing. Our operator is of the most general form containing all previous ones and we also weak.n assumptions on the operator and the nonlinearity to get the above results. Moreover, we do not impose the restricted condition on p(x) and the uniform monotonicity of the operator to show the existence of three distinct solutions.
