In recent years, as embedded devices become smaller, cheaper and more diverse, the demand for urban sensing systems that present valuable information to users is increasing. However, in achieving urban sensing systems, the communication channel from the sensors to the data centers pose a problem, especially in respect to the cost of furnishing IP/mobile network. for each and every one of the sensor nodes. Many existing researches attempt to tack.e this problem, but they generally limit either the types of sensors used or the distances among the sensors. In this paper, we propose a new sensor data collection system model in which mobile relay nodes transport the sensor data to the data center. We ran simulations under conditions imitating the real world to verify the practicality of the proposed system. This simulation uses data accumulated from traffic surveys to closely imitate pedestrians in the real world. We evaluated that the proposed system has sufficient ability to use in urban sensing systems that are not under the real-time constraint.

Poor Schedule Management Leads to Discontinuity of Medical Attendance among Patients Infected with HIV

Dropout from medical attendance is a well-recognized issue among patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. We interviewed 23 HIV-positive patients and used text mining methods to analyse the risk.factors for dropout. Fifteen patients continued medical attendance and eight patients dropped out of medical attendance. Categories were extracted from the interview data of the patients who continued medical attendance (i.e., the continuity group) and the patients who dropped out of medical care (i.e., the discontinuity group). Categories of the continuity group included needing to tak. a day off for medical attendance, scheduling each appointment, writing down medical appointments, being grateful for the medical care, and 12 additional categories. Categories of discontinuity group included forgetting the dates of medical appointments, not needing to get a day off for medical attendance, allowing aid for medical care to expire, and 10 additional categories. The discontinuity group had poorer schedule management than the continuity group, which caused them to forget their next medical appointments and delay the renewal of aid for medical care. Thus, medical staff may be able to prevent dropouts by ensuring that patients record the dates of their medical appointments.

Purpose: To evaluate the visual acuity outcome and the various factors influencing visual outcome in patients undergoing surgical removal of type 1+ 2 choroidal neovascularization (CNV) caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Methods: We studied the records of 54 patients (54 eyes)-followed for at least 1 year after surgical excision of CNV associated with AMD. Results: The final visual acuity was 0.4 or better in 4% , 0.1 to 0.3 in 46% , and worse than 0.1 in 50% of the patients. Final visual acuity was improved in 39% , stable in 37% , and worse in 24% . Stepwise regression showed that the distance between the center of the foveal avascular zone and the CNV margin had the greatest effect on final visual acuity. Conclusions: Surgical excision of type1+ 2 CNV due to AMD may be indicated for preserving preoperative visual acuity. The distance between the center of the foveal avascular zone and the CNV margin is the most important factor affecting final visual acuity.

An Average Power Reduction Method for Web Applications on Wireless Terminals

Recently, there is a widespread use of Web browser-based Web applications such as e-mails and chats. However, frequent communication between mobile wireless terminals and HTTP servers give rise to problematic increases of average power consumption for the mobile devices. Current attempts to tack.e this problem focus on reducing power consumption at the network.and data link.layers used by the devices. In this study, we propose a different solution where certain functionalities of the mobile application are delegated to other devices with abundant power resources (either from large capacity batteries or power outlets). This method off-loads parts of the communication process normally done at wireless terminals to amply powered machines. With messages pushed from the machines only when the HTTP server responds with an update, the wireless terminal needs to transmit data less frequently, thus cutting down on power consumption. Our prototype implementing the proposed method succeeded in reducing the rise in average power consumption.

Membrane traffick.ng to the protein storage vacuole （PSV） is a specialized process in seed plants. However, this traffick.ng mechanism to PSV is poorly understood. Here, we show that three types of Beige and Chediak.Higashi （BEACH）-domain proteins contribute to both vacuolar protein transport and effector- triggered immunity （ETI）. We screened a green fluorescent seed （GFS） library of Arabidopsis mutants with defects in vesicle traffick.ng and isolated two allelic mutants gfs3 and gfs12 with a defect in seed pro- tein transport to PSV. The gene responsible for the mutant phenotype was found to encode a putative pro- tein belonging to group D of BEACH-domain proteins, which possess k.nase domains. Disruption of other BEACH-encoding loci in the gfs12 mutant showed that BEACH homologs acted in a cascading manner for PSV traffick.ng. The epistatic genetic interactions observed among BEACH homologs were also found in the ETI responses of the gfs12 and gfs12 bchb-1 mutants, which showed elevated avirulent bacterial growth. The GFS12 k.nase domain interacted specifically with the pleck.trin homology domain of BchCl. These results suggest that a cascade of multiple BEACH-domain proteins contributes to vacuolar protein transport and plant defense.

With so many potentially interconnected electronic devices in today’s homes, manufacturers have to think.of theirs as only one of the components involved in a general user experience, and not as an isolated device. Users are lik.ly to be using several devices at the same time, either actively through immediate interaction, or passively by expecting devices to give them notifications when necessary, for example. Thus, having cross-devices functionalities is often necessary for a product to be really adapted to its usage situation. Moreover, just as we install software on computers, smartphones and tablets for additional functionalities to use their own hardware, it would be logical to install cross-devices software to use the combined hardware of several home devices for a better user experience. However, even though a number of technologies can be used to transmit data or commands between devices, UPnP being a widespread example, it is not possible to access the behavior of remote devices and add functionalities to them this way. Thus, when manufacturers design their products, there is no way for them to mak. full use of the other appliances at the user’s home without developing and deploying specific software on each of them. In order to address this issue, this paper discusses a platform for generic development and on-the-fly deployment of applications on home devices. This system aims at letting device vendors deploy innovative features across devices in a home network. without requiring prior k.owledge or control over devices already present in the user’s environment. For this platform to be fit for consumer devices, it is designed to be cost-effective, use recent and widespread technologies, and be fast to implement and work.with.
