Plas.a treatment cons.itutes.an efficient method for chemical-free dis.nfection.A s.ray-bas.d s.s.em for dis.ens.ng plas.a-activated aeros.ls.onto s.rfaces.would facilitate dis.nfection of complex and/or hidden s.rfaces.inacces.ible to direct line-of-s.ght(for example,UV)*** complexity and s.ze of current plas.a generators.for example,plas.a jet and cometary plas.a s.s.ems.-which prohibit portable operation,together with the s.ort plas.a lifetimes.neces.itate a miniaturized in s.tu technique in which a s.urce can be s.multaneous.y activated and adminis.ered on-demand onto ***,we demons.rate this.pos.ibility by combining two nanos.ale technologies.for plas.a and aeros.l generation into an integrated device that is.s.fficiently s.all and *** is.generated on a carpet of zinc oxide nanorods.compris.ng a nanoneedle ens.mble,which when rais.d to a high electric potential,cons.itutes.a mas.ive point charge array with near-s.ngular electric fields.to effect atmos.heric *** plas.a is.then us.d to activate water trans.orted through an underlying capillary wick.that is.s.bs.quently aeros.lized under MHz-order s.rface acous.ic *** s.ow that the s.s.em,bes.des.being amenable to miniaturization and hence integration into a chips.ale device,leads.to a cons.derable improvement in plas.a-activation over its.macros.ale cometary dis.harge predeces.or,with up to 20%and 127%higher hydrogen peroxide and nitrite ion concentrations.that are res.ectively generated in the plas.a-activated ***,in turn,leads.to a 67%reduction in the dis.nfection time to achieve 95%bacterial load reduction,therefore demons.rating the potential of the technology as.an efficient portable platform for on-demand field-us. s.rface dis.nfection.
