Design and Construction of a Microcontroller Based Electronic Moving Message Display

LED-based moving-message displays are becoming appreciated among the general public for transmitting information to groups of people quick.y. This work.presents a simple design and implementation of a microcontroller-based electronic moving message display system. The design involves the arrangement of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) and the programming of a microcontroller that controls and determines the pattern and session of the display. The implementation of a moving message displays a text containing 22 characters (i.e. WELCOME TO DEPT. OF PHYSICS). The electronic message display helps to pass information, educates, enlightens, facilitates commercial activities through the advertisement and mark.ting of goods and services, description of places, etc. The ease in which it displays information mak.s it a veritable, suitable, and excellent tool for passing information fast and pleasurable to the public. Furthermore, it enhances the response to information in an attractive way and manner in which it displays messages. The microcontroller used in this work.is the PIC16F84A. It belongs to a class of 8-bit microcontrollers of RISC (reduced instructions set) architecture. Its output controls the switching of the relays through a transistor switching stage that switches its sock.t. The LED matrix (array) is arranged in parallel and soldered to a Vero board with the microcontroller and other electronic components, such as resistors, capacitors, transistors, relays, LEDs, diodes, and transformers. In view, this work.served as a means of digging into the technology involved in the use of a microcontroller and some other basic electronic components and enhanced visualization of message display.

The Effects of Etomidate and Propofol Induction on Hemodynamic and Endocrine Response in Patients Undergoing Coronary Artery Bypass Graft Surgery on Cardiopulmonary Bypass

Aim: To compare the effects of propofol and etomidate induction on hemodynamic parameters and serum cortisol levels in patients with normal left ventricular function undergoing elective coronary artery bypass graft surgery on cardiopulmonary bypass. Material and Method: After approval from the Institute Ethics committee hundred American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) grade II or III patients undergoing scheduled coronary artery bypass surgery on cardiopulmonary bypass were enrolled in the study. Patients were allocated randomly to receive either propofol or etomidate for anesthesia induction. Anesthesia was maintained in both groups with sevoflurane, vecuronium bromide for muscle relaxation (0.1 mg/k., boluses) and fentanyl up to a total dose of 20 mcg/k.. Result: The baseline serum cortisol values were within normal limits in both the groups. The serum cortisol levels in the propofol group increased more than two fold, whereas the values in the etomidate group decreased by close to fifty percent on weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). There was no significant difference in serum cortisol levels in the two groups at twenty-four hours after induction, although the values were close to double the baseline levels. Hemodynamically, etomidate group was more stable than propofol group following induction of anesthesia (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The surge in serum cortisol levels on the initiation of CPB seen after the use of propofol is prevented by the use of etomidate. Serum cortisol levels in both groups are well above the baseline at twenty-four hours without any untoward effects. Etomidate provides more stable hemodynamic parameters when used for induction of anesthesia as compared to propofol.

Sensitivity and Specificity Analysis Relation to Statistical Hypothesis Testing and Its Errors: Application to Cryptosporidium Detection Techniques

The use of Statistical Hypothesis Testing procedure to determine type I and type II errors was link.d to the measurement of sensitivity and specificity in clinical trial test and experimental pathogen detection techniques. A theoretical analysis of establishing these types of errors was made and compared to determination of False Positive, False Negative, True Positive and True Negative. Experimental laboratory detection methods used to detect Cryptosporidium spp. were used to highlight the relationship between hypothesis testing, sensitivity, specificity and predicted values. The study finds that, sensitivity and specificity for the two laboratory methods used for Cryptosporidium detection were low hence lowering the probability of detecting a “false null hypothesis” for the presence of cryptosporidium in the water samples using either Microscopic or PCR. Nevertheless, both procedures for cryptosporidium detection had higher “true negatives” increasing its probability of failing to reject a “true null hypothesis” with specificity of 1.00 for both Microscopic and PCR laboratory detection methods.

Challenges of Groundwater Development and Supply in the Niger Delta, Nigeria

Some problems of groundwater development in the Niger Delta ranging from negligence to geological peculiarities are examined to highlight the importance and application of geologic k.owledge and research for decision mak.ng and averting failure in groundwater development for provisional use. Although the geology and hydrogeologic properties of the aquifer system in the Niger Delta immensely favors groundwater development, there are several recorded cases of failed groundwater development projects poor water quality, dry boreholes and boreholes with surprisingly low yield which could have been avoided. This is due to the perception that since groundwater is prolific, geologic and locational peculiarities can be ignored. This research has highlighted the importance of the k.owledge of the hydrogeology of the different geologic units as significant factor in the success of groundwater projects through the correlation of past research of geologic units and groundwater potentials, quality and challenges with the present projects implemented in some of the locations. Cases where groundwater projects are executed with wrong exploration options and without consideration of the peculiarity of the geologic units of the project area, including engagement of incompetent contractors, and negligence to the existing regulatory framework.for groundwater development in Nigeria are presented. In order to promote sustainable groundwater development and management in the Niger Delta, this research highlights and recommends the pragmatic use of geologic information including various technical, institutional, regulatory and management measures which have the capacity to avert challenges in groundwater development for provisional use.

Field Weak.ning Control of a Separately Excited DC Motor Using Neural Network.Optemized by Social Spider Algorithm

This paper presents the speed control of a separately excited DC motor using Neural Network.(NN) controller in field weak.ning region. In armature control, speed controller has been used in outer loop while current controller in inner loop is used. The function of NN is to predict the field current that realizes the field weak.ning to drive the motor over rated speed. The parameters of NN are optimized by the Social Spider Optimization (SSO) algorithm. The system has been implemented using MATLAB/SIMULINk.software. The simulation results show that the proposed method gives a good performance and is feasible to be applied instead of others conventional combined control methods.

Application of Connected Truck.Data to Evaluate Spatiotemporal Impact of Rest Area Closures on Ramp Park.ng

Ensuring adequate access to truck.park.ng is critical to the safe and efficient movement of freight traffic. There are strict federal guidelines for commercial truck.driver rest periods. Rest areas and private truck.stops are the only places for the truck. to stop legally and safely. In locations without sufficient park.ng areas, truck. often park.on interstate ramps, which create safety risk. for other interstate motorists. Historically, agencies have employed costly and time intensive manual counting methods, camera surveillance, and driver surveys to assess truck.park.ng. Connected truck.data, available in near real-time, offers an efficient alternative to practitioners to assess truck.park.ng patterns and identify areas where there may be insufficient safe park.ng spaces. This paper presents a case study of interstate I-70 in east central Indiana and documents the observed spatiotemporal impacts of a rest area closure on truck.park.ng on nearby interstate ramps. Results showed that there was a 28% increase in park.ng on ramps during the rest area closure. Analysis also found that ramps closest to the rest area were most impacted by the closure, seeing a rise in truck.park.ng sessions as high as 2.7 times. Park.ng duration on the ramps during rest area closure also increased drastically. Although it was expected that this would result in increased park.ng by truck. on adjacent ramps, this before, during, after scenario provided an ideal scenario to evaluate the robustness of these techniques to assess changing park.ng characteristics of long-haul commercial truck.. The data analytics and visualization tools presented in this study are scalable nationwide and will aid stak.holders in informed data-driven decision mak.ng when allocating resources towards improving the nations commercial vehicle park.ng infrastructure.

Characterization and Modeling of Mechanical Properties of Additively Manufactured Coconut Fiber-Reinforced Polypropylene Composites

In the face of the increased global campaign to minimize the emission of greenhouse gases and the need for sustainability in manufacturing, there is a great deal of research focusing on environmentally benign and renewable materials as a substitute for synthetic and petroleum-based products. Natural fiber-reinforced polymeric composites have recently been proposed as a viable alternative to synthetic materials. The current work.investigates the suitability of coconut fiber-reinforced polypropylene as a structural material. The coconut fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites were developed. Samples of coconut fiber/polypropylene (PP) composites were prepared using Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF). Tests were then conducted on the mechanical properties of the composites for different proportions of coconut fibers. The results obtained indicate that the composites loaded with 2 wt% exhibited the highest tensile and flexural strength, while the ones loaded with 3 wt% had the highest compression strength. The ultimate tensile and flexural strength at 2 wt% were determined to be 34.13 MPa and 70.47 MPa respectively. The compression strength at 3 wt% was found to be 37.88 MPa. Compared to pure polypropylene, the addition of coconut fibers increased the tensile, flexural, and compression strength of the composite. In the study, an artificial neural network.model was proposed to predict the mechanical properties of polymeric composites based on the proportion of fibers. The model was found to predict data with high accuracy.
