Malaria in.ection.is associated with in.reased gen.ration.of free radicals. This study in.estigated the an.ioxidan. activity of ethan.lic leaf extracts of Spilan.hes uligin.sa, Ocimum basilicum, Hyptis spicigera an. Cymbopogon.citratus. Seven.y two (72) swiss mice of both sexes were used. All the mice were treated in.raperiton.ally with 0.2 ml parasitized blood suspen.ion.an. parasitemia assessed by thin.blood films stain.d with Geimsa stain.after seven.y two hours. The mice were divided in.o six groups n.mely;A, B, C, D, E, an. F of twelve mice each. Groups B, C, D an. E were subdivided in.o three (3): B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, C3, D1, D2, D3, E1, E2 an. E3, four in.each subgroup. The subgroups were treated with the extracts of Spilan.hes uligin.sa (Sw), Ocimum basilicum, Hyptis spiligera an. Cymbopogon.citratus each for five (5) con.ecutive days with 200, 400 an. 800 mg/k. body weight respectively via oral in.ubation. Two con.rol groups, A an. F were used. The n.gative con.rol (A) was treated daily with 5 ml/k. n.rmal salin. while positive con.rol group (F) was treated with 5 mg/k. body weight of chloroquin.. The results in.icated a gen.ral sign.fican. (P n.the lipid peroxidation.con.en.ration. of the parasitized treated mice when.compared to parasitized un.reated mice on.the last day. A gen.ral sign.fican. dose depen.en. in.rease (P n.superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase an. glutathion. perioxidase activities as well as reduced glutathion. con.en.ration. in.the treated mice except at a dosage of 200 mg/k. body weight for all the plan.s. The effects of the extracts were sign.fican.ly higher (P n.that of chloroquin.. These results suggest that the ethan.lic extracts of these plan.s may con.ribute to the protection.of malaria in.ected mice again.t oxidative damage by improvin. an.ioxidan. status in.a dose depen.en. man.er.

Obesity is k.own.to be a major risk.factor of type 2 diabetes （T2D） an. respon.ible for most lipid abn.rmalities associated with the disease but limited data on.such association.are available for diabetic patien.s of Igbo ethn.city in.the South East region.of n.geria. A case-con.rol study in.olvin. 72 T2D patien.s an. 75 n.n.diabetic （n.） patien.s （con.rol） ofIgbo ethn.city was con.ucted. Demographic an. an.hropometric data were obtain.d followed by blood collection.for the determin.tion.of fastin. blood sugar （FBS）, total cholesterol （TC）, triglyceride （TG）, high den.ity lipoprotein.（HDL） an. low den.ity lipoprotein.（LDL）. Obesity based on.waist circumferen.e （WC） was sign.fican.ly higher （p 〈 0.001） in.T2D patien.s compared to their n.n.diabetic coun.erparts. Similarly, TC, TG an. LDL levels were sign.fican.ly （p 〈 0.001） higher in.T2D patien.s while HDL was sign.fican.ly lower （p 〈 0.001） in.T2D patien.s compared to the con.rol. The proportion.of dyslipidaemia characterized by high TC, high TG, high LDL an. low HDL was sign.fican.ly higher （p 〈 0.001） in.T2D patien.s. BMI correlated positively （p 〈 0.05） with WC, TC, an. LDL while FBS correlated positively （p 〈 0.05） with TG but n.gatively with HDL. In.con.lusion. dyslipidaemia characterised by hypercholesterolaemia, hypertriglyceridaemia, elevated LDL an. reduced HDL, as well as obesity were associated with T2D an. correlated with FBS in.this population.
