Development of total hip arthroplasty (THA) now spans more than 5 decades encompassing combinations of metal-on-metal (MOM), ceramic-on-metal (COM), metal-on-plastic (MOP), ceramic-on-plastic (COM), and ceramic-on-ceramic (COC). In every arena of extensive technical development, there exists a data set that when viewed in isolation seemed of little import, but when assembled in-toto may produce a generational shift in perception. Our review focused on two such THA events. Firstly, COC retrieval studies (1999-2001) noted habitual wear patterns on heads and peripheral wear stripes, along with femoral-neck.impingement, and ceramic surfaces stained gray by metal debris. These COC data indicated THA risks included, 1) cup edge-loading (E/L) on heads producing “stripe wear”, 2) component impingement releasing metal particles resulting in 3) tissues contaminated by metal debris. A corresponding MOM impingement-debris mechanism was only perceived by Howie (2005) in a McKee-Farrar retrieval study. Our anticipation at LLUMC was that MOM retrievals would provide superior wear details to those seen on COC retrievals. We noted stripe wear in the polar zone of CoCr heads and basal stripes in the non-wear areas. The basal-polar stripe combinations were found in all MOM retrievals. This work.presents a study of the Paleogene sandstones of the Manik. plateau in k.lwezi, DR Congo. These sandstones belong to the “Grès polymorphes” group, which together with the overlying “Sables ocre” mak.s up the k.lahari Supergroup. Sedimentological and geochemical analyses have enabled us to characterize these sandstones and determine their origin, the conditions of their formation and the tectonic context in which they were developed. The results show that the sandstones are quartz arenites with a high level of mineralogical, textural and chemical maturity. They are recycled sandstones, formed in an intracratonic sedimentary basin, in the context of a passive continental margin, after a long fluvial transport of sediments. These sandstones initially come from intense alteration of magmatic rock. with felsic composition, mainly tonalite-trondhjemite-granodiorite (TTG) complexes, in hot, humid palaeoclimatic conditions and oxidizing environments.

Antimicrobial effects of carnosic acid,k.empferol and luteolin on biogenic amine(BA)production by five spoilage(Photobacterium damselae,Proteus mirabilis,Enterobacter cloacea,Pseudomonas luteola and Serratia liquefaciens)and five food-borne pathogenic bacteria(Staphylococcus aureus ATCC29213,Enterococcus faecalis ATCC29212,Escherichia coli ATCC25922,Salmonella Paratyphi A NCTC13 and Yersinia enterocolitica NCTC 11175)were *** formation of ammonia(AMN),trimethylamine(TMA)and BAs by all bacterial strains were observed using ornithine decarboxylase ***,AMN,and TMA were determined by using high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)*** results showed that significant differences were observed(P≤0.05)in formation among spoilage and also food-borne *** impact of phenolic compounds on AMN,TMA and BAs production was dependent on bacterial *** total amount of cadaverine(CAD),putrescine(PUT),histamine(HIS)and tyramine(TYR)was considered,the phenolic compounds presented antimicrobial activity against fish spoliage bacteria and food-borne pathogens following the order;k.empferol>carnosic acid>*** phenolics have potential to be used as food preservatives.

Back.round: Beta-thalassemia is a hereditary haemoglobinopathy caused by defective hemoglobin (Hb) β-globin synthesis, leading to excess α-globin chains that cause hemolysis and impair erythropoiesis. Ischemia modified albumin (IMA) is not a signal protein and not generated in pro-inflammatory state alone but rather an end product of oxidative stress. Objectives: The aim of the study was to evaluate ischemia modified albumin (IMA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in children with β-thalassemia major and its relation to different iron chelators. Patients and Methods: The study was carried on 40 children diagnosed as beta-thalassemia major recruited from the outpatient clinic and the pediatric department, at Al-Zahraa University Hospital, Faculty of medicine for Girls, Al-Azhar University and EL Minia Insurance Hospital. They were 20 male and 20 female, aged from 4 - 11 years. Another 40 apparently healthy children age and sex matched as control group. CRP and IMA were determined for all participants. Results: There were significant increases in serum CRP, IMA and ferritin levels in patients group compared to control group. There were significant decreases of IMA and CRP levels of thalassemic patients on chelation deferiprone (DFP) compared to deferasirox (DFX) P-value (<0.01) for each.
