Nitrogen uptak. by phytoplank.on in surface waters of the Indian sector of Southern Ocean during austral summer

This study reports the nitrogen uptak. rate （using 15N tracer） of phytoplank.on in surface waters of different frontal zones in the Indian sector of the Southern Ocean （SO） during austral summer of 2013. The investigated area encompasses four major frontal systems, i.e., the subtropical front （STF）, subantarctic front （SAF）, polar front-1 （PF1） and polar front-2 （PF2）. Southward decrease of surface water temperature was observed, whereas surface salinity did not show any significant trend. Nutrient （NO3- and SiO44-） concentrations increased southward from STF to PF; while ammonium （NH4＋）, nitrite （NO2-） and phosphate （PO433 remained compara- tively stable. Analysis of nutrient ratios indicated potential N-limited conditions at the STF and SAF but no such scenario was observed for PF. In terms of phytoplank.on biomass, PF1 was found to be the most productive followed by SAF, whereas PF2 was the least productive region. Nitrate uptak. rate increased with increasing latitude, as no systematic spatial variation was discerned for NH4＋ and urea （CO（NH2）2）. Linear relationship between nitrate and total N-uptak. reveals that the studied area is capable of exporting up to 60% of the total production to the deep ocean if the environmental settings are favorable. Lik. N-uptak. rates the f-ratio also increased towards PF region indicating comparatively higher new production in the PF than in the subtropics. The moderately high averagefiratio （0.53） indicates potentially near equal contributions by new production and regenerated production to the total productivity in the study area. Elevation in N-uptak. rates with declining temperature suggests that the SO with its vast quantity of cool water could play an important role in drawing down the atmospheric CO2 through the ＂solubility pump＂.

Oviposition Site Selection in the Malayan Giant Frog (Limnonectes blythii) in Singapore: Conservation Implications

Amphibians require specific habitats for breeding and loss or degradation of such habitats can negatively affect reproductive success. Oviposition site selection within a habitat is also important as site quality is link.d to larval survivorship and metamorphic success. We investigated oviposition site preferences of the stream-breeding frog Limnonectes blythii in Singapore through surveys and habitat measurements of breeding and non-breeding sites（N = 30 and 32, respectively）. The study species L. blythii is classified as Near Threatened（NT） in the IUCN red list and is associated with medium sized forest streams. L. blythii appeared to prefer streams with higher water p H and shallower water depths for oviposition. Our findings have implications in conservation management as it provides the baseline for habitat restoration for creation of new and for preserving existing breeding habitat of L. blythii.

CFD study： Effect of pulsating flow on gas-solid hydrodynamics in FCC riser

Gas–solid flow in a fluid catalytic crack.ng （FCC） riser exhibits poor mixing in the form of a core–annulus flow pattern and a dense bottom/dilute top distribution of solids. To enhance gas–solid mixing, studies on dense fluidized beds have suggested using a pulsating flow of gas. The present study investigates the effect of pulsating flow on gas–solid hydrodynamics inside the FCC riser employing computational fluid dynamics. Two flow conditions are investigated： a cold flow of air-FCC catalyst in a pilot-scale riser and a reactive flow in an industrial-scale FCC riser. In the cold-flow riser, pulsating flows cause the slug flow of solids and thus increase the average solid accumulation in the flow domain and solid segregation towards the wall. In the industrial FCC riser, pulsating flows produce radial profiles that are more homogeneous. Pulsating flows further improve the conversion and yield in the initial few metres of height. At 7 m, the conversion from pulsating flow is 59%, compared with 44% in without pulsating flow. The results and analysis presented here will help optimize flow conditions in the circulating fluidized bed riser, in not only FCC but also applications such as fast pyrolysis and combustion.

CFD simulation of solid-liquid stirred tank. for low to dense solid loading systems

The hydrodynamics of suspension of solids in liquids are critical to the design and performance of stirred tank. as mixing systems. Modelling a multiphase stirred tank.at a high solids concentration is complex owing to particle-particle and particle-wall interactions which are generally neglected at low concentra- tions. Most models do not consider such interactions and deviate significantly from experimental data. Furthermore, drag force, turbulence and turbulent dispersion play a crucial role and need to be precisely k.own in predicting local hydrodynamics. Therefore, critical factors such as the modelling approach, drag, dispersion, coefficient of restitution and turbulence are examined and discussed exhaustively in this paper. The Euler-Euler approach with k.netic theory of granular flow, Syamlal-O＇Brien drag model and Reynolds stress turbulence model provide realistic predictions for such systems. The contribution of the turbulent dispersion force in improving the prediction is marginal but cannot be neglected at low solids volume fractions. Inferences drawn from the study and the finalised models will be instrumen- tal in accurately simulating the solids suspension in stirred tank. for a wide range of conditions. These models can be used in simulations to obtain precise results needed for an in-depth understanding of hydrodynamics in stirred tank..

Effect of baffles on performance of fluid catalytic crack.ng riser

Increasing demand of automobile fuel and a need to process heavier crude oil mak.s it imperative to find improvements to the design of existing fluid catalytic crack.ng （FCC） units. Several modifications to the design of the riser section of FCC units have been suggested in previous studies including： improved feed nozzle designs, multiple nozzle configurations, internal baffles, and novel two-stage-riser systems. In this study, we investigate the effects of baffles on the performance of FCC risers using computational fluid dynamics simulations. In this study, predictions from a basis model （without baffles） are compared with those from four different configurations including：（i） 5-cm baffles at 5-m spacing, （ii） 7.5-cm baffles at 5- m spacing, （iii） 10-cm baffles with 5-m spacing, （iv） lO-cm baffles at 2.5-m spacing, and （v） lO-cm baffles at 1-m spacing. The baffles force the catalyst away from wails toward the center of the riser, enhancing the radial dispersion of the catalyst and the heat transfer inside the riser. The use of longer baffles and smaller spacings further increases the dispersion, yielding more homogeneous radial profiles. The changes in the radial dispersion result in variations in the conversion, yields, and pressure drops. The baffles increase conversion of vacuum gas oil （VGO） and the yield of gasoline. However, the simulations showed that longer baffles and a larger number of baffles did not always give a higher yield or higher conversion. Among the simulated configurations, the 5-cm baffles at 5-m spacing gave the highest conversion of VGO, whereas the 10-cm baffles at 1 -m spacing resulted in the highest yield of the gasoline. Thus, rational optimization of baffle configurations is required to achieve optimal performance.

We introduce a novel neural network.structure called strongly constrained theory-guided neural network.SCTgNN),to investigate the behaviour of the localized solutions of the generalized nonlinear Schr?dinger(NLS)*** equation comprises four physically significant nonlinear evolution equations,namely,the NLS,Hirota,Lak.hmanan-Porsezian-Daniel and fifth-order NLS *** generalized NLS equation demonstrates nonlinear effects up to quintic order,indicating rich and complex dynamics in various fields of *** combining concepts from the physics-informed neural network.and theory-guided neural network.TgNN)models,the SCTgNN aims to enhance our understanding of complex phenomena,particularly within nonlinear systems that defy conventional *** begin,we employ the TgNN method to predict the behaviour of localized waves,including solitons,rogue waves and breathers,within the generalized NLS *** then use the SCTgNN to predict the aforementioned localized solutions and calculate the mean square errors in both the SCTgNN and TgNN in predicting these three localized *** findings reveal that both models excel in understanding complex behaviour and provide predictions across a wide variety of situations.
