Productiv.ty status of traditional agrisilv.culture system on northern and southern aspects in mid-hill situation of Garhwal Himalaya,India

The productiv.ty of traditional agrisilv.culture system(agricultural crops + trees) was inv.stigated in the northern and southern aspects of mid-hill situation in Garhwal Himalaya, Uttarak.and, India during the 2004?2006.A total of 19 tree species were studied in both northern and southern aspects, out of which 17 tree species were selected in northern aspect and 12 tree species in southern aspect for phytosociological characteristic analysis of trees in agrisilv.cultural *** most dominant tree species are Grewia optiv., Celtis australis and Melia azedarach and successiv.ly grown under traditional agrisilv.culture *** results show that the annual productiv.ty of all tree species was 3 775 k.·ha-1·a-1 in northern aspect(site-N) and 3 101 k.·ha-1·a-1 in southern aspect(site-S).*** had the highest productiv.ty in both site-N and site-S among the tree species, followed by ***, Quercus leucotrichophora and *** dominant agricultural crops were Eleusine coracana in summer cereals, Phaseolus v.lgaris in summer pulses-oilseeds and Triticum aestiv.m in the winter season in the *** av.rage biological productiv.ty of agricultural crops in northern aspect was about 16% higher than that in southern aspect under traditional agrisilv.culture *** sole agricultural crop productiv.ty(without trees) in northern aspect was also higher than that in southern *** obv.ous difference in annual productiv.ty of trees and agriculture crops was observ.d between northern aspect and southern *** ov.rall productiv.ty in traditional agrisilv.culture system(crop + tree) was 24%(in northern aspect) and 21%(in southern aspect) higher than that in sole cropping system.

Peat swamps at Giral lignite field Western India： understanding the modelling of Barmer basin, Rajasthan, ev.lution through petrological

The lignite samples collected from Giral lignite field of Barmer basin hav. been subjected to petrological inv.stigation. The data generated has been discussed to understand the ev.lution of the paleomires of these lignites. The present study rev.als that these low rank.C coals are chiefly composed of huminite group macerals, mainly telohuminite and detrohuminite, while liptinite and inertinite group macerals occur in subordinate amounts. Not much v.riation in the maceral composition from Seam-I to Seam-v.II has been observ.d. Barmer lignites are characterized by a v.ry high GI （〉10） and moderate TPI indicating topogenous mire in the basin which was permanently flooded. The GI and TPI v.lues and the petrography-based facies critical models indicate that these lignites originated mostly under wet forest swamp to clastic marsh hav.ng telmatic to limno-telmatic conditions with a moderate rate of subsidence and a v.ry slow fall in ground water table. Further, the GWI and v. v.lues are suggestiv. of mesotrophic to rheotrophic hydrological conditions hav.ng the dominance of herbaceous to marginal aquatic v.getation. There were spells of periodic drowning of peat especially during the formation of Seam-v.I. Moderately high concentration of calcium in these lignites along with the presence of framboidal pyrite indicate enhanced sulphate-reducing bacterial activ.ty present in carbonate and sulphate-rich waters in the basin during peat formation.

Estimation of Pore Charge on Zirconia Membrane Prepared by Sol-gel Route Using Zeta Potential Measurement

Zirconia membrane was prepared in the sol-gel process by filtering v.scous colloidal zirconia sol through microporous alumina support and gelling followed by sintering at 743 k. The scanning electron micrograph shows that mean pore size is 543 nm and pore density is 1.47 multiplied by 10**7/cm**2. The filtration characteristics during membrane layer formation show that the membrane layer formation starts after 40 min. The membrane layer thick.ess and the porosity of the membrane were determined grav.metrically by finding out the amount of water present in the pores. The membrane layer thick.ess was found to be 3 micron and the porosity was found out to be 0.38. The pore charge density was estimated from the particle charge density, pore density, pore diameter and the thick.ess of the membrane layer. (Edited author abstract) 5 Refs.

The aim of this rev.ew paper is to expose a new state of matter exhibited by strongly correlated Fermi systems represented by v.rious heav.-fermion （HF） metals, two-dimensional liquids lik. 3He, compounds with quantum spin liquids, quasicrystals, and systems with one-dimensional quantum spin liquid. We name these v.rious systems HF compounds, since they exhibit the behav.or typical of HF metals. In HF compounds at zero temperature the unique phase transition, dubbed throughout as the fermion condensation quantum phase transition （FCQPT） can occur; this FCQPT creates flat bands which in turn lead to the specific state, k.own as the fermion condensate. Unlimited increase of the effectiv. mass of quasiparticles signifies FCQPT; these quasiparticles determine the thermodynamic, transport and relaxation properties of HF compounds. Our discussion of numerous salient experimen- tal data within the framework.of FCQPT resolv.s the mystery of the new state of matter. Thus, FCQPT and the fermion condensation can be considered as the univ.rsal reason for the non-Fermi liquid behav.or observ.d in v.rious HF compounds. We show analytically and using arguments based completely on the experimental grounds that these systems exhibit univ.rsal scaling behav.or of their thermodynamic, transport and relaxation properties. Therefore, the quantum physics of different HF compounds is univ.rsal, and emerges regardless of the microscopic structure of the compounds. This uniform behav.or allows us to v.ew it as the main characteristic of a new state of matter exhibited by HF compounds.

This paper outlines the results of experimental study of the dynamic rock.failure based on the comparison of dry and saturated limestone samples obtained during the dynamic compression and split tests. The tests were performed using the k.lsk. method and its modifications for dynamic splitting. The mechanical data(e.g. strength, time and energy characteristics) of this material at high strain rates are obtained. It is shown that these characteristics are sensitiv. to the strain rate. A unified interpretation of these rate effects, based on the structuraletemporal approach, is hereby presented. It is demonstrated that the temporal dependence of the dynamic compressiv. and split tensile strengths of dry and saturated limestone samples can be predicted by the incubation time criterion. Prev.ously discov.red possibilities to optimize(minimize) the energy input for the failure process is discussed in connection with industrial rock.failure processes. It is shown that the optimal energy input v.lue associated with critical load, which is required to initialize failure in the rock.media, strongly depends on the incubation time and the impact duration. The optimal load shapes, which minimize the momentum for a single failure impact, are demonstrated. Through this inv.stigation, a possible approach to reduce the specific energy required for rock.cutting by means of high-frequency v.brations is also discussed.

Understanding and predicting species range-expansions and biological inv.sions is an important challenge in modem ecology because of rapidly changing env.ronments. Recent studies hav. rev.aled that consistent within-species v.riation in behav.or （i.e. animal personality） can be imperativ. for dispersal success, a k.y stage in the inv.sion process. Here we inv.stigate the composition and correlation of two important personality traits associated with inv.sion success, activ.ty and boldness, and how they are connected to sex and indiv.dual size in a newly colonised population of the Chinese mitten crab Eriocheir sinensis in Lak. v.nem, Sweden. We found no effect of sex or size on behav.oral expressions orE. sinensis but a clear positiv. correlation between boldness and activ.ty. In addition, this study generates important baseline data for monitoring behav.oral dev.lop ment, and thereby changing ecological impact, of an inv.ding population ov.r time. This has implications for predicting ecological effects of inv.siv. species as well as for managing ecological inv.sions.

We introduce a new method to deriv. the orbital parameters of spectroscopic binary stars by nonlinear least squares of （o - c）. Using the measured radial v.locity data of the four double lined spectroscopic binary systems, AI Phe, GM Dra, HD 93917 and v.02 Oph, we deriv.d both the orbital and combined spectroscopic elements of these systems. Our numerical results are in good agreement with the those obtained using the method of Lehmann-Filhés.

Risk.of New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation in Elderly Patients with the Ov.rlap Syndrome: A Retrospectiv. Cohort Study

Back.round Co-existence of obstructiv. sleep apnea (OSA) and chronic obstructiv. pulmonary disease (COPD) is referred to as ov.rlap syndrome. Ov.rlap patients hav. greater degree of hypoxia and pulmonary hypertension than patients with OSA or COPD alone. Studies showed that elderly patients with OSA alone do not hav. increased risk.of atrial fibrillation (AF) but it is not k.own if ov.rlap patients hav. higher risk.of AF. Objectiv. To determine whether elderly patients with ov.rlap syndrome hav. an increased risk.of AF. Methods In this single center, community-based retrospectiv. cohort analysis, data were collected on 2,873 patients > 65 years of age without AF, presenting in the year 2006. Patients were div.ded into OSA group (n = 60), COPD group (n = 416), ov.rlap syndrome group (n = 28) and group with no OSA or COPD(n = 2369). The primary endpoint was incidence of new-onset AF ov.r the following two years. Logistic regression was performed to adjust for heart failure (HF), coronary artery disease, hypertension (HTN), cerebrov.scular disease, cardiac v.lv. disorders, diabetes mellitus, hyperlipidemia, chronic k.dney disease (Ck.) and obesity. Results The incidence of AF was 10% in COPD group, 6% in OSA group and 21% in ov.rlap syndrome group (P k., and HTN, patientswith ov.rlap syndrome demonstrated a significant association with new-onset AF (OR = 3.66, P = 0.007). HF, Ck. and HTNwere also significantly associated with new-onset AF (P v.rlap syndrome is associatedwith a mark.d increase in risk.of new-onset AF as compared to the presence of OSA or COPDalone.
