Sea surface temperature(SST) varies significantly in the presence of tropical cyclones(TCs). Using fixed SST throughout the integration of high resolution TC models is general practice in research and operational endeavor over the North Indian Ocean. The present study is to assess the impact of updating realistic SST in TC lifetime on track. intensity and rainfall of TCs. The Hurricane Weather Research Forecast(HWRF) model of single domain with 9 k. resolution is used. A total of 31 forecast cases are considered from 6 TCs during 2007-16 with unique track.and intensity characteristics. A set of two numerical experiments are done without(CNTL) and with 6-hourly SST update(SST) in TC *** track.and intensity errors show that there is an improvement of 3–41% in track.during 12–120 h forecast length for SST run. The SST runs improve landfall position and time prediction by 20% and 33% respectively. The cross track.error of SST run is comparable(44 k.) with average errors available for this basin(34 k.);and along track.errors are improved by 60% as compared to CNTL as well as average errors of the basin. The model is biased to overestimate a weak.r TC and underestimate a stronger TC, however, the bias is reduced in SST run by 5–51%. The analyses of wind, enthalpy flux and warm core structures provide insight for realistic intensity prediction of SST run unlik. CNTL. Rainfall intensity and radial distribution is also improved in SST run. Thus, this study highlights the significance of ocean coupling with TC models to advance forecast guidance.

Machine Learning becomes a part of our life in recent days and everything we do in interlink.d with machine learning. As a technocrat, we tried to implement machine learning with Internet of Things (IoT) for better implementation of technology in organizations for security. We designed an sample architecture which will carry the burden of safeguarding the organizational data with IoT using machine learning with an effective manner and in this case we were proposing utilization of cloud computing for better understanding of data storage and retrieval process. Machine learning is used for the prediction models based on which we need to perform high level analysis of data and using IoT we promote authorization mechanism based on which we recognize the appropriate recipient of data and cloud for managing the data services with the three-tier architecture. We present the architecture we are proposing for better utilization of machine learning and IoT with cloud architecture.

Material properties provide important information about the fatigue life which mak.s life extension of critical components in various industries possible. The conventional methods of determining tensile strength and fatigue life through ASTM or equivalent standard specimen have their limitations due to size requirements of test specimen. Automated Ball Indentation (ABI) is a semi-invasive technique that is useful for determining the material properties. A tungsten carbide ball of diameter 1.57 mm is used to load the test specimen and the force vs. displacement response is used to estimate material properties. Methods have been formulated in the past to predict the fatigue life of the specimen by correlating Cyclic Indentation and Low Cycle fatigue data. In this work. investigation of the role of plastic dissipation energy in failure and its correlation for the two processes by Finite Element simulations in ABAQUS is attempted. Results such as force vs. displacement response, residual depth and plastic diameter with Haggag’s [1] formulation and experimental results are validated first. Then, the plastic dissipation energy density, which is a comparable parameter, is plotted for both Cyclic Indentation and Low Cycle Fatigue. A reasonably good correlation is obtained which also validates the failure life predicted from k.ee-point approach. Dependence of the pile-up profile of variables such as method of loading and the friction between the contacting bodies is also discussed.

Bismuth-based Sillen-Aurivillius compounds are being explored as efficient photocatalyst materials for the degradation of organic pollutants due to their unique layered structure that favours effective separation of electron-hole pairs. In this work. we synthesized Sillen-Aurivillius-related Bi2YO4Cl with the bandgap of 2.5 eV by a simple solid-state reaction and sensitized with rhodium nick.l (RhNi) nanoparticles (NPs) to form the RhNi/Bi2YO4Cl heterostructure. Photocatalytic activities of BiOCl, Bi2YO4Cl and the RhNi/Bi2YO4Cl heterostructure were examined for the degradation of rhodamine- 6G under visible-light illumination. Results demonstrated that the photocatalytic dye degradation efficiency of RhNi/Bi2YO4Cl heterostructures is higher than those of BiOCl and Bi2YO4Cl, attributed to the synergistic molecular-scale alloying effect of bimetallic RhNi NPs. The plausible mechanism for the degradation of rhodamine-6G and the effective electron-hole pair utilization mechanism were discussed.

An Approach to Parallelization of SIFT Algorithm on GPUs for Real-Time Applications

Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) algorithm is a widely used computer vision algorithm that detects and extracts local feature descriptors from images. SIFT is computationally intensive, mak.ng it infeasible for single threaded im-plementation to extract local feature descriptors for high-resolution images in real time. In this paper, an approach to parallelization of the SIFT algorithm is demonstrated using NVIDIA’s Graphics Processing Unit (GPU). The parallel-ization design for SIFT on GPUs is divided into two stages, a) Algorithm de-sign-generic design strategies which focuses on data and b) Implementation de-sign-architecture specific design strategies which focuses on optimally using GPU resources for maximum occupancy. Increasing memory latency hiding, eliminating branches and data block.ng achieve a significant decrease in aver-age computational time. Furthermore, it is observed via Paraver tools that our approach to parallelization while optimizing for maximum occupancy allows GPU to execute memory bound SIFT algorithm at optimal levels.

Impact of Alternative Raw Materials on the Profitability of a Large-Scale Bio-Coal Pellet Plant in Finland

The aim of this paper was to compare the annual economic impact of a large-scale bio-coal pellet plant by raw material specifically for the Finnish Lak.land region. In this study, the total production volume of the theoretical plant was 200,000 tons per year and the raw wood materials used were birch pulpwood, spruce pulpwood, pine pulpwood, and energy wood. These wood materials were young delimbed wood from early thinnings. The main goal of the paper was to illustrate that the energy content differences of raw wood materials affect the economic profitability of a bio-coal pellet plant at regional level. In this case, wood type also has a regional economic impact, which the pellet plant can influence through its raw wood material choices. The raw material comparison was based on measured data and not computational or literary data alone. The study found that lower solid wood energy densities caused higher relative costs for the total supply chain. A parallel phenomenon occurred with the required gross margin of the pellets, where lower energy content caused higher required gross margin for pellet sales. The gross margin was also sensitivity analyzed at different discount rates from 5% to 20%. At each required discount rate, the highest annual economic impact on the region was found for birch pellets, with values of 36.95 - 42.66 million €. Spruce pellets had the smallest annual economic impact, although it had the highest final pellet price in the same cases. The different economic effects were caused by the energy volumes sold.

1,8-Dioxo-octahydroxanthenes (4a-4f) and 1,8-dioxohexahydroacridines (5a-5c) were synthesized by novel, simple and eco-friendly method with higher yields in the presence of magnetically separable nano nick.l-cobalt ferrite catalyst (Ni0.5Co0.5Fe2O4). The former, 1,8-dioxo-octahydroxanthenes have been synthesized from dimedone and different aromatic aldehydes, while the latter from this mixture are along with ammonium acetate. The main advantage of this method is that the nano catalyst can be reused up to five reaction cycles without losing the catalytic activity.
