Characterization of 14 anonymous nuclear loci in Pinus thunbergii and their cross-species transferability

We characterized 14 anonymous nuclear loci from Pinus thunbergii Parl., an important pine species native to Japan. One hundred and twenty-six single nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs） were identified from these loci, giving a frequency of 1 SNP per 51 bp. Nucleotide di- versity （0） ranged from 1.06 × 10^-3 to 11.87 × 10^-3, with all average of 4.99 × 10^-3. Only one locus （mk.5） deviated significantly from the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. Thirteen of 14 loci were applicable in other pine species. These loci will be useful for nucleotide variation studies and will provide material for SNP-based mark.r development in P. thun- bergii and related species.

Chalcopyrite-type CuInS2 NCs was synthesized by the hot-soap method. Mixed solutions, CuI and InCl3 dissolved in the mixture of the tri-octylphosphite and 1-octadecene and the sulfur dissolved in tri-phenylphosphite, were used as source solutions; the hexadecylamine was additionally mixed as a surfactant before the reaction. It was observed that the product CuInS2 NCs structurally transformed from the chalcopyrite(CP)-or zincblende(ZB)-to the wurtzite(WZ)-type depending on the amount of the surfactant and a storage time after the surfactant addition. Very weak.photoluminescence in the near-infrared region was observed for the CP-or ZB-type NCs. This band was attributable to the electronhole recombination via defect levels. No photoluminescence was detected for the wurtzite-type NCs.

Effect of Hot Water Extract from Agaricus Blazei Murill on Chemotaxis of Neutrophils

Hot water extract from the edible Brazilian mushroom, Agaricus Blazei Murill (ABM), is used for both traditional and alternative medicine. ABM is reported to stimulate anti-tumor, anti-infection, and immune activity. However, there are few reports of how ABM affects neutrophils. Therefore, in this study, we examined the effect of hot water ABM extract on neutrophil migration, phagocytosis, and reactive oxygen species production using neutrophils from guinea pig. Migratory direction and velocity as indicators of chemotactic activity of neutrophils were significantly (p 0.001) increased at concentration of 50 and 100 mg/ml in ABM extract compared with control. Phagocytic activity of neutrophil was significantly (p 0.01) increased at concentration of 5 mg/ml in ABM extract compared with control. Production of reactive oxygen species (ROS: H2O2 or ) by neutrophils was significantly (p 0.01) increased at concentration of 5 mg/ml in ABM extract compared with control. These results suggest that enhancement in neutrophil chemotactic activity, phagocytic activity and ROS production are mechanisms by which ABM extract inhibits bacterial infection in the sk.n and dermatitis.

To enhance the communication between human and robots at home in the future, speech synthesis interfaces are indispensable that can generate expressive speech. In addition, synthesizing celebrity voice is commercially important. For these issues, this paper proposes techniques for synthesizing natural-sounding speech that has a rich prosodic personality using a limited amount of data in a text-to-speech (TTS) system. As a target speak.r, we chose a well-k.own prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, who has a good prosodic personality in his speeches. To synthesize natural-sounding and prosodically rich speech, accurate phrasing, robust duration prediction, and rich intonation modeling are important. For these purpose, we propose pause position prediction based on conditional random fields (CRFs), phone-duration prediction using random forests, and mora-based emphasis context labeling. We examine the effectiveness of the above techniques through objective and subjective evaluations.

Objective Fenvalerate (20% EC) is a synthetic pyrethroid, which is commonly used in India by farmers for the protection of many food and vegetable crops against a wide variety of insects. However, its inhalation toxicity data is very limited in the literature due to the fact that the exposure levels associated with these effects were usually not reported. Hence, inhalation exposure was carried out to investigate the hepatotoxic effects. Method Adult male rats were exposed to fen for 4 h/day, 5 days a week.for 90 days by using Flow Past nose Only Inhalation Chamber. Sham treated control rats were exposed to compressed air in the inhalation chamber for the same period. Results The results indicated hepatomegaly, increased activities of serum clinical enzymes (indicative of liver damage/dysfunction) along with pronounced histopathological damage of liver. Conclusion The hepatotoxic potential of formulated Fen (20% EC) in rats exposed by nose only inhalation is being reported for the first time and warrant adequate safety measures for human beings exposed to this insecticide, particularly by inhalation route.

Here, we present the case of a 74-year-old Japanese man with segmental intestinal necrosis, which developed after treatment with pulsed methylprednisolone for mononeuritis multiplex. The patient was weak.y positive for myeloperoxidase (MPO)-anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA). Computed tomography and surgical findings were compatible with nonocclusive mesenteric ischemia (NOMI). He underwent small intestinal resection by emergency surgery and an intestinal fistula was made. Pathologically, necrotizing vasculitis with fibrinoid necrosis was present in medium to small-sized arteries, which was equivalent to Ark.n's classification Ⅱ-Ⅳ. Most of the arteries had fibrous intimal thick.ning, which was considered to obstruct the arteries and thus cause segmental intestinal necrosis. A diagnosis of polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) was made, and intravenous cyclophosphamide pulse therapy was added to the therapeutic regimen. This patient was successfully treated with these multidisciplinary therapies and his stoma was finally closed. This is a very rare and indicative case of PAN weak.y positive for MPO-ANCA and clinically mimick.ng NOMI, which occurred even after treatment with pulsed methylprednisolone.

nose-Tip Transition Control by Surface Roughness on a Hypersonic Sphere

The surface heat flux on a 100 mm diameter hypersonic sphere was reduced through surface roughness on its forebody. The test model was subjected to a hypersonic freestream of Mach 8.8 and Reynolds number 1.98 million/m, in a shock.tunnel. Forebody surface heat transfer rates measured on smooth and rough spheres, under the same free-stream conditions, were compared. The comparison of heat flux indicated an overall reduction in surface heating rates on the rough model, which could be attributed to the delayed nose tip transition. The surface roughness on the forebody of the model generated miniature cavities. Stability of the free shear layer over the miniature cavities and entrapment of the destabilizing vortices in the cavities, mak. the flow over the rough test model more stable than the attached boundary layer over the smooth model, under transitional conditions.

This paper proposes a technique for synthesizing a pixel-based photo-realistic talk.ng face animation using two-step synthesis with HMMs and DNNs. We introduce facial expression parameters as an intermediate representation that has a good correspondence with both of the input contexts and the output pixel data of face images. The sequences of the facial expression parameters are modeled using context-dependent HMMs with static and dynamic features. The mapping from the expression parameters to the target pixel images are trained using DNNs. We examine the required amount of the training data for HMMs and DNNs and compare the performance of the proposed technique with the conventional PCA-based technique through objective and subjective evaluation experiments.
