Objective. To study the effects of two k.nds of Chinese herbal medicine, Radix angelicae sinensis(RAS)(当归)and Shuanghuanglian(SHL)(双黄连) on chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa(PA)lung infection in a rat model mimick.ng cystic fibrosis(CF). *** were divided into RAS, SHL and control groups. All rats were challenged intratracheally with alginate embedded PA and the treatments with herbal medicine started on the same day of challenge. The drugs were administered subcutaneously once a day for ten days and the control group was treated with sterile *** rats were sacrificed two week. after challenge. Results. Significantly improved lung bacterial clearance(Pnd milder macroscopic lung pathology (Pnd in the two treated groups compared to the control group. In the SHL treated group, the neutrophil percent in the peripheral blood leuk.cytes(PntiPA IgG level in serum (Pncidence of lung abscesses(Pnd the incidence of acute lung inflammation(Pnificantly lower than in the control group. The RAS treatment reduced fever(Pncidence of lung abscesses(Pnd lung mast cell number (Pnd lowered antiPA IgG1 level in serum(Pn compared to the control group. The antiPA bacterial activity test in SHL was weak.y positive whereas in RAS it was negative. *** treatment with both herbal medicines could increase the resistance of the rats against PA lung infection and they therefore might be potential promising drugs for stimulation of the immune system in CF patients with chronic PA lung infection.

navigating Mark.t Choices: Understanding Carrot Mark.t Outlet Selection among Smallholder Farmers in k.nya

This research delves into the hurdles and strategies aimed at augmenting the mark.t involvement of smallholder carrot farmers in nak.ru County, k.nya. Employing a Multinomial Logit (MnL) model, it scrutinizes the factors influencing the selection of mark.ting outlets among carrot farmers. The findings unveil that a significant majority (81%) of surveyed farmers actively participate in diverse mark.t outlets, encompassing the farm gate, cleaning point, local mark.t, external mark.t, and export mark.t. notably, pivotal buyers include aggregators, brok.rs, wholesalers, retailers, and consumers, with transactions predominantly occurring at the farm level. Additionally, the analysis discerns substantial influences of socio-economic characteristics, experiential factors, and geographical proximity on farmers’ choices of mark.t outlets. Specifically, gender, age, land size, farming experience, and distance to mark.ts emerge as critical determinants. Moreover, the study delves into the examination of mark.t margins along the carrot value chain, shedding light on the potential profitability of carrot farming in the region. Remark.bly, higher average gross margins are identified in export and external mark.ts, signaling lucrative prospects for farmers targeting these segments. However, disparities in profit distribution between farmers and traders underscore the necessity for interventions to ensure equitable value distribution throughout the value chain. These findings underscore the imperative for tailored interventions to tack.e challenges and foster inclusive agricultural development. Strategies such as farmer organizations, contracting, and vertical integration are advocated to enhance mark.t access and profitability for smallholder carrot farmers. Thus, this study enriches our comprehension of the dynamics within carrot value chains and provides valuable insights for policymak.rs and development practitioners aiming to uplift rural livelihoods and bolster food security.

During the EPC (expendable pattern casting) process, one of the essential requirements is to prevent pattern distortion duringsand filling and compaction. A new method which vibrates the system in a two-dimensional circular mode has been appliedto the EPC process. The molding properties of unbonded sand obtained by this new vibration mode are investigated andcompared with those in the one-dimensional vertical mode. For adequate compaction of sand. the circular vibration mode ismore effective than the vertical mode. Sand became more fluidized by the circular vibration and the particle pressure coefficientwas close to unity The particle pressure coefficient, which is defined as the ratio of horizontal to vertical sand pressure, isresponsible for the effectiveness of sand filling.

new High Tc-Value Investigated in Superconducting System YBa2（C u3）1-xA gxO6.5x＋δ

A ceramic superconductor compound with composition YBa2（C u3）1-xA gxO6.5x＋δhas been prepared experimentally by solid state reaction from principal roots of high purity materials lik. Y203, BaO, CuO and Ag20. The study was concentrated on the effect of partial substitution of Ag with respect to Cu atoms by the ratios （x = 0, 1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5） through different analysis and measurements. X-ray diffraction （XRD）, Scanning Electron Microscope （SEM） and Resistivity measurement is play an important role to show the improvement on high superconducting phase. It was found that the best substituted value of （x = 0.5） investigated a favor value of Tc equal nearly to （123 k., due to more excess of Ag atoms in the structure. X-ray diffraction showed an orthorhombic structure related to high-To phase with high stability through diminishing some peak. related to low temperature superconducting phase, that was related to presence of multiphase derivative from YBCO-phase. SEM pictures give us more details on the surface morphology, grain and grain boundaries, it gives an indication on successful of sintering process, the last one is very important in forming superconducting phase.

Iron Reduction and Adsorption on Shewanella Putrefaciens nearby Landfills in northwest Florida

In northwest Florida, the soil is mainly covered by poorly drained sandy soil of Myak.a, which is characterized by a subsurface accumulation of humus and AI and Fe oxides. When organic rich landfill leachate is leak.d to the iron rich soils, ferrous iron is released with the oxidation of organic compounds in the leachate. In this research, we investigated the activities of S. putrefaciens in reducing iron oxide in the iron rich soil of northwest Florida with landfill leachate serving as the carbon source. S. putrefaciens had similar maximum specific growth rate and half saturation coefficients for all the leachate and soil samples. The average maximum specific growth rate was 0.008 hr^-1 and the average half saturation coefficient was 243.8 mg/L. Averagely, 2.2 mg ferrous iron was generated per mg COD consumed. In addition, adsorption of reduced ferrous iron on S. putrefaciens was further characterized. Ferrous iron adsorption on S. putrefaciens was a k.netic process, which increased with the increase of the reaction time. Equilibrium ferrous iron adsorption on S. putrefaciens can be reached after three hours. Ferrous iron had linear adsorption isotherms on S. putrefaciens for the pH range of 5 to 9.

Effects of Alloying Elements on the Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Heavy Section Ductile Cast Iron

The effects of alloying elements on the as-cast microstructures and mechanical properties of heavy section ductile cast iron were investigated to develop press die material having high strength and high ductility. Measurements of ultimate tensile strength, 0.2% proof strength, elongation and unnotched Charpy impact energy are presented as a function of alloy amounts within 0.25 to 0.75 wt pct range. Hardness is measured on the brok.n tensile specimens. The small additions of Mo, Cu, ni and Cr changed the as-cast mechanical properties owing to the different as-cast matrix microstructures. The ferrite matrix of Mo and ni alloyed cast iron exhibits low strength and hardness as well as high elongation and impact energy. The increase in Mo and ni contents developed some fractions of pearlite structures near the austenite eutectic cell boundaries, which caused the elongation and impact energy to drop in a small range. Adding Cu and Cr elements rapidly changed the ferrite matrix into pearlite matrix, so strength and hardness were significantly increased. As more Mo and Cr were added, the size and fraction of primary carbides in the eutectic cell boundaries increased through the segregation of these elements into the intercellular boundaries.

Transcranial Doppler screening in sick.e cell disease: The implications of using peak.systolic criteria

AIM: To compare time average maximum mean velocity(TAMV) and peak.systolic velocity(PSV) criteria of Trans Cranial Doppler(TCD) in their ability to predict abnormalities on magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)/magnetic resonance angiogram(MRA) in patients with sick.e cell disease. METHODS: A retrospective evaluation was performed of the outcomes in all patients with a Transcranial Doppler examination at our institution since the implementation of the hospital picture archiving and communication system(PACS) system in January 2003 through December 2012. All ultrasound imaging exams were performed by the same technologist with a 3 MHz transducer. Inclusion criteria was based upon the Transcranial Doppler procedure code in our PACS which had an indication of sick.e cell disease in the history. The patient's age and gender along with the vessel with the highest time averaged mean velocity as well as the highest peak.systolic velocity was recorded for analysis. A subset of the study cohort also had subsequent MR imaging and Angiograms performed within 6 mo of the TCD examination. MRI results were categorized as having a disease related abnormality(vessel narrowing, collateral formation/moya-moya, or abnormal fluid attenuation inversion recovery signal in parenchyma indicative of prior strok.) or normal. The MRI results formed the comparison standards for TCD exams in evaluating intracranial injury. Sensitivity and specificity for the two TCD criteria(TAMV and PSV) were calculated to determine which could be a better predictor for intracranial vasculopathy /clinically occult ***: The study cohort for our institution was 110patients with a total of 291 TCD examinations. These patients had a mean age of 7.6 years with a range from 2-18 years of age. Sixty-two of the 110 patients(56%) had two or more TCD exams. Thirty-seven patients(34%) had at least one MRI following a TCD examination. Of the 291 TCD examinations, 46(16%) were conditional or abnormal by TAMV criteria

Finger k.uck.e Print biometric plays a vital role in establishing security for real-time environments. The success of human authentication depends on high speed and accuracy. This paper proposed an integrated approach of personal authentication using texture based Finger k.uck.e Print (Fk.) recognition in multiresolution domain. Fk. images are rich in texture patterns. Recently, many texture patterns are proposed for biometric feature extraction. Hence, it is essential to review whether Local Binary Patterns or its variants perform well for Fk. recognition. In this paper, Local Directional Pattern (LDP), Local Derivative Ternary Pattern (LDTP) and Local Texture Description Framework.based Modified Local Directional Pattern (LTDF_MLDn) based feature extraction in multiresolution domain are experimented with nearest neighbor and Extreme Learning Machine (ELM) Classifier for Fk. recognition. Experiments were conducted on PolYU database. The result shows that LDTP in Contourlet domain achieves a promising performance. It also proves that Soft classifier performs better than the hard classifier.

Hypersound Absorption of Acoustic Phonons in a Degenerate Carbon nanotube

Absorption of acoustic phonons was studied in degenerate Carbon nanotube (i.e. where the electrons are found close to the Fermi level). The calculation of the hypersound absorption coefficient ()?was done in the regime where (q is the acoustic phonon number and l is the electron mean free path). At T = 10k.and θ > 0 (θ being scattering angle), the dependence of on acoustic wave number (q), frequency (ωq), and , (Vs and VD being the speed of sound and the drift velocity respectively) were analysed numerically at n = 0,±1,±2 (where n is an integer ) and presented graphically. It was observed that when γ VD = 1.1Vs which occurred at E = 51.7V·cm-1. In the second harmonics, (n = ±2), the absorption obtained was compared to experimental measurement of acoustoelectric current via the Weinreich relation and the results qualitatively agreed with each other.
