Noninvasive,glucose-monitoring technologies using infrared spectroscopy that have been studied typically require a calibration process that involves blood collection,which renders the methods somewhat *** develop a truly noninvasive,glucose-monitoring technique using midinfrared spectroscopy that does not require blood collection for calibration by applying domain adaptation(DA)using deep neural network. to train a model that associates blood glucose concentration with mid-infrared spectral data without requiring a training dataset labeled with invasive blood sample *** realizing DA,the distribution of unlabeled spectral data for calibration is considered through adversarial update during training network. for regression to blood glucose *** calibration improved the correlation coeffcient between the true blood glucose concentrations and predicted blood glucose concentrations from 0.38 to *** result indicates that this calibration technique improves prediction accuracy for mid-infrared glucose measurements without any invasively acquired data.

A synthetic polymer with a laminin-apatite composite layer on its surface would be useful as a percutaneous device. The preparation of such a composite was attempted in the present study using poly（ ethylene terephthalate ）（PET） and polyethylene （PE） as the synthetic polymer. PET and PE plates and those pretreated with an oxygen plasma were alternately dipped in calcium and phosphate ion solutions, and then immersed in a metastable calcium phosphate solution supplemented with laminin （ LCP solution ）. The PET and PE plates pretreated with an oxygen plasma formed a uniform and continuous layer of a laminin-apatite composite on their surfaces. In contrast, the PET and PE plates that had not been pretreated with an oxygen plasma did not form a continuous layer of a laminin-apatite composite on their surfaces. The hydrophilic functional groups on the PET and PE surfaces introduced by the plasma treatment were responsible for the successful laminin-apatite coruposite coating.

Both tryptophan(Trp) and auxin are essential for plant growth and Trp is a precursor for auxin *** of Trp and auxin need to be tightly controlled to ensure optimal growth and development. It has been very difficult to study the homeostasis of these two essential and inter-dependent compounds. Auxin is mainly synthesized from Trp via a two-step pathway using indole-3-pyruvate(IPA) as the intermediate. Here we used a bacterial Trp oxidase Reb O, which does not exist in Arabidopsis and which converts Trp to the imine form of IPA,to modulate IPA levels in Arabidopsis. Our results demonstrate that Arabidopsis plants use two strategies to ensure that no excess IPA is made from Trp. IPA is made from Trp by the TAA family of aminotransferases, which we show catalyzes the reverse reaction when IPA level is high. Moreover, excess IPA is converted back.to Trp by the VAS1 aminotransferase. We show that the VAS1-catalyzed reaction is very important for Trp homeostasis. This work.not only elucidates the intricate biochemical mechanisms that control the homeostasis of Trp, IPA, and auxin,but also provides novel tools for further biochemical studies on Trp metabolism and auxin biosynthesis in plants.

The relative locations of AOB,NOB,and DNB were examined for three different k.nds of carriers in two types of hybrid bioflm process configurations:integrated fixed-film activated sludge(IFAS)and moving bed bioflm reactor(MBBR)*** water resource recovery facilities(WRRFs)used Anodk.iness^TM k. carriers(k.)at Broomfield,Colorado,USA and polypropylene resin crriers(R)at Fuk.ok.Japa,whic MBBR WRFS used k. crier at South Adams Couty,Colorado,USA and sponge carriers(SC)at Saga,*** COD to N ratios ranged from 8:1 to 15:*** COD and BOD removal efficiencies were high(96%-98%);NH^+4-N and TN removal efficiencies were more varied at 72%98%and 64%-77%,*** extent of TN removal was higher at high SRT,high COD:N ratio and low DO concentration in the anoxic *** IFAS,RC with high specific surface area.(SSA)maintained higher AOB population than *** carriers with high SSA maintained higher overall bacteria population than k. in MBBR ***,the DNB were not more abundant in high SSA *** diversity of AOB,NOB,and DNB was fairly similar in different *** *** over Nitrosospira *** denitrifying bacteria included Rhodobacter sp.,Sulfuritalea sp.,.Rubrivivax sp:Paracoccus sp..and Pseudomonas *** results from this work.suggest that high SRT,***:N ratio,low DO concentration in anoxic tank.,and carriers with greater surface area may be recommended for high COD,BOD and TN removal in WRRFs with IFAS and MBBR systerms.

Effect of forest thinning on hydrologic nitrate exports from a Nsaturated plantation

Although several studies have assessed the effects of thinning on water quality,including nitrogen(N)exports,few have examined N-saturated *** study assessed the short-term effect of thinning on N exports from a N-saturated plantation forest in northern k.ushu,western Japan,that was thinned(43%of basal area)during January-March *** levels at the gauging station were continually measured,and streamwater baseflow and stormflow samples were collected before(2011)and after(2013)forest *** precipitation before(2469 mm)and after(2418 mm)forest thinning differed little,and annual water discharge after thinning(1641 mm)was similar to that before thinning(1609 mm).However,direct flow during stormflow periods was higher after thinning(260 mm)than before(153 mm).The concentrations of major ions in stream water did not differ before and after *** a result,the high annual dissolved inorganic N(DIN)exports differed little before(35.8 k. N ha^-1 a^-1)and after(36.5 k. N ha^-1 a^-1)forest *** exports during stormflow periods were slightly higher after(12.2 k. N ha^-1 a^-1)than before thinning(10.5 k. N ha^-1 a^-1)and were proportional to the increased direct flow after thinning(561 mm after vs.470 mm before thinning).We concluded that thinning does not affect annual N exports from the N-saturated plantation forest,but it can increase the proportion of N exported during stormflow periods in proportion to increased water volume of direct flow after thinning.
