Cystic ovar.an disease (COD) is one of the main causes of infer.ility in dair. cattle and has a hig. economic impact on far.er.. COD is caused by an endocr.ne imbalance within the hypothalamic-pituitar.-ovar.an axis pr.venting.the matur. g.aafian follicle fr.m ovulating. The cause at the molecular.level is not well under.tood. However. the matr.x metallopr.teinases (MMP) and plasminog.n activator.plasmin families of extr.cellular.(ECM) matr.x-deg.ading.pr.teinases ar. involved in g.aafian follicle br.ak.own and oocyte r.lease in the ovulation pr.cess. Our.r.sear.h investig.ted the possibility of using.plasma concentr.tions of MMP-2 and -9 and their.natur.l tissue inhibitor. (TIMP) -1 and -2 as pr.g.ostic indicator. of COD. Plasma samples fr.m cystic and non-cystic dair. cows wer. analyzed using.ELISA. Althoug. plasma concentr.tions of MMP-2 and -9 wer. g.eater.and TIMP-2 was lower.in non-cystic compar.d to cystic cows, no sig.ificant differ.nces wer. obser.ed in MMP-2 and -9 and TIMP-1 and -2 due to cyst status. However. the TIMP-1:MMP-9 and TIMP-2:MMP-2 molar.r.tios wer. g.eater. (P = 0.099) and (P = 0.038), r.spectively, in cystic compar.d to non-cystic cows, sug.esting.a pr.teolytic insufficiency in cows with COD that may be a contr.buting.factor.to the anovulator. patholog.. These data may pr.vide the g.oundwor.8}for.futur. r.sear.h and development of tools for.dair. far.er. to selectively choose r.placement heifer. less lik.ly to develop COD.
