Influencing factors of the neurodevelopment of high-risk.infants

Back.round High-risk.infants refer to newborns exposed to high-risk.factors in the prenatal, natal or postnatal period. High-risk.infants are at high risk.of developmental retardation, and early identification of developmental abnormalities plays a vital role in improving high-risk.infants' quality of *** To describe the neurodevelopment of high-risk.infants aged less than 1 year old, and to analyse the incidences and influencing factors of neurodevelopmental abnormalities in order to provide a basis for neurodevelopment monitoring and management of highrisk.*** High-risk.infants born between January 2016 and December 2016 in the maternity and infant health hospitals of three districts in Shanghai were followed *** Gesell Developmental Scale was used to assess the neurodevelopmental level at the time of recruitment(0-2 months) and at 9 months. Univariate and multivariate analyses of the influencing factors were *** 484 high-risk.infants(male 51 %, female 49%)with an average gestation age of 36.5±2.2 week. were recruited. At the time of recruitment, the average age was2.1(0.8) months, and the developmental quotient(DQ)scores of full-term high-risk.infants in motor(t=3.542,p=0.001), cognitive(t=3.125, p=0.002), language(t=3.189, p=0.002) and social(t=3.316, p=0.001) areas were higher than those of preterm infants. The incidences of developmental abnormalities of full-term high-risk.infants in motor(χ~2 =9.452, p=0.002), cognitive(χ~2=6.258, p=0.012), language(χ~2 =12.319, p =0.001) and social(χ~2 =6.811, p=0.009) areas were lower than the preterm infants. At 9 months, there was no difference in the DQ scores and incidences of developmental abnormalities in four areas between full-term and preterm high-risk.infants, and the incidence of developmental abnormalities was around 10%.Conclusion The incidence of neurodevelopmental abnormalities in high-risk.infants aged less than 1 year old is high. Vasectomy by epithelial curettage without suture or cautery： a pilot study in humans

Curettage of the epithelium of the vas deferens might be a safe and effective method of male sterilization. We conducted a pilot study of vasectomy by epithelial curettage with a novel microcurette called the Vas-X in 12 normal men requesting elective sterilization. Seminal fluid analysis was obtained monthly after the procedure for 6 months. Pain was assessed by questionnaire. Three months after the procedure, all men attained sperm concentrations of less than 0.2 million sperm per mL, and seven were azoospermic. Post-procedural pain was minimal. Nine men ultimately achieved and maintained azoospermia; however, 4 to 6 months after the procedure, sperm concentrations increased in three of the 12 subjects, necessitating repeat vasectomy. Microscopic examination of the vas deferens from these failures revealed re-canalization. Vasectomy by epithelial curettage can result in effective sterilization; however, 1/4 of the subjects were not effectively sterilized by the procedure due to re-canalization of the vas deferens. Epithelial curettage will require further refinement to determine if it is a viable form of vasectomy.

Risk.Factors of Learning Disabilities in Chinese child.en in Wuhan

Objective To investigate prevalence rate of learning disabilities (LD) in Chinese child.en, and to explore related risk.factors, and to provide theoretical basis for preventing such disabilities. Methods One thousand and one hundred fifty one child.en were randomly selected in primary schools. According to criteria set by ICD-10, 118 child.en diagnosed as LD were classified into the study group. Four hundred and ninety one child.en were classified into the normal control group. Five hundred and forty two child.en were classified into the excellent control group. The study instruments included PRS (The pupil rating scale revised screening for learning disabilities), Conners' child.en behavior check.list tak.n by parents and YG-WR character check.list. Results The prevalence rate of LD in Chinese child.en was 10.3%. Significant differences were observed between LD and normally learning child.en, and between the LD group and the excellent group, in terms of scores of Conners' behavior check.list (Pchild.en's characteristics and social relationships. Conclusion These data underscore the fact that LD is a serious national public health problem in China. LD is resulted from a number of factors. Good studying and living environments should be created for LD child.en.

Spontaneous retropharyngeal haematoma is an unusual condition and difficult to diagnosis early especially in infants. It has multiple aetiological factors and can present to a number of specialists including the otolaryngologist. We describe an unusual case of a spontaneous huge retropharyngeal haematoma in 1-year-old male child.which demonstrates the dramatic presentation and emphasizes the need for immediate surgical approach.

Pediatric HIV Infection in Togo: Situation of child.Care in the Central Region from 2008 to 2015

This piece of work.covers thirteen (13) AIDS assistance programs sites over the period 1st January 2008 to 31st December 2015. The study is retrospective, descriptive, and cross-sectional based on 292 clinical cases of HIV infected child.en aged between 0 and 14 years old. A regional committee was charged to validate antiretroviral treatment (ART) prescriptions on a week.y basis. We have also used data from the regional committee register. HIV infected child.en represent 5.1% of casework.on ART. The average starting age for ART was 4.5 years (1 - 180 months) with a sex ratio (Male/Female) of 0.9. The clinical classifications according to WHO guidelines were: Stage III (52.3%) and Stage IV (20.3%). The most frequent opportunistic infections were: wasting (40.12%), digestive candida infection (29.0%), acute respiratory infections (22.8%) and sk.n diseases (17.9%). The HIV type 1 was detected on all of the child.en (100%). The average rate of CD4 at the beginning of the ART was 552.98 cells/mm3, leading to a severe immuno-suppression in many cases (44.8%). The initial ART was essentially NEVIRAPINE + LAMIVUDINE + STAVUDINE. HIV infections diagnosis are usually late in the Central Region of Togo and will therefore be improved by the UNAIDS 90-90-90 strategic plan by 2020, through various initiatives. These are: the Prevention of Mother to child.HIV Transmission (PMTCT), the Early Infection Diagnosis (EID) based on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and the Provider Initiated Testing and Counseling (PITC).

Back.round: Malaria infection during pregnancy is a major public health problem in tropical and subtropical regions globally. Anaemia is often an adverse outcome of severe parasitic infections during pregnancy in developing countries. Pregnant women in malaria-endemic communities are more susceptible to Plasmodium falciparum infections than non-pregnant women of child.bearing age. Objective: To comparatively investigate malaria and anaemia in pregnant and non-pregnant women of child.bearing age. Design: A cross-sectional comparative study. Three hundred and eighty pregnant women and 380 non-pregnant women were screened for the study. Setting: The study was conducted at the University Hospital, k.ame Nk.umah University of Science and Technology, k.masi, Ghana. Measurements: Participants’ demographic data were collected via the administration of questionnaires. In addition their blood samples were analyzed for haemoglobin level and malaria parasites, while stool samples from the pregnant women were examined for intestinal parasites. Results: The study revealed that pregnant women have higher malaria parasitaemia (12.6%) and anaemia (62.6%). The species of Plasmodium isolated from the pregnant women were P. falciparum (85.4%), P. malariae (4.2%) and P. ovale (10.4%). Malaria parasitaemia was higher in the primigravidae (14%). However multigravidae recorded the highest anaemia prevalence (67.1%). Age of pregnant women was a factor affecting malaria parasitaemia with a significant P-value and OR (P value = 0.0041, 0R = 7.61). Conclusions: Pregnant women were more susceptible to malaria and anaemia than non-pregnant women of child.bearing age. Most of the pregnant women reported at antenatal clinic during the second trimester. Primigravidae however recorded the highest malaria parasitaemia. The main species of Plasmodium observed in the blood samples was falciparum.
