Physicochemical Characteristics, Degradation Rate and Vulnerability Potential of Obudu Cattle Ranch Soils in Southeast Nigeria

Obudu Cattle Ranch covers an area of 2400 hactares at an altitude of 900 - 1500 m above mean sea level and is suitable for cultivation of cucumber (Cucumis sativus), tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), Irish potato (Solanum tuberosum), spinach (Spinacia oleracea) cabbage (Brassica oleracea), lettuce (Lactuca sativa) because of its semitemperate climate. Physicochemical characteristics, degradation rates and vulnerability potential of the soils were studied. Eighteen composite soil samples (0 - 15 and 15 - 30 cm) were collected at interval of 500 m along North-South and East-West transects in nine locations. The soils were characterized as follows: texture of sandy loam for the surface and subsurface soils;pH(H2O) (4.7 - 5.7), organic carbon (4.9 - 74.8 gk.-1), total nitrogen (0.2 - 4.8 gk.-1), carbon-nitrogen ratio (14 - 25), available P (6.66 - 107.89 mgk.-1), effective cation exchange capacity (ECEC) (5.58 - 14.62 cmol·k.-1) and base saturation (49.37% - 85.28%);the surface soils were generally higher in organic carbon, total nitrogen, available P and ECEC than the subsurface. The Soil Degradation Rate (SDR)/ Vulnerability Potential (Vp) weighted values of texture (3/3), soil pH(H2O) (4/2), organic carbon (1/5) and base saturation (2/4) showed moderate to low susceptibility of the soils to degradation or vulnerability. The soils could be managed by liming, practicing crop rotation and using soil conservative measures.

Carbon nanoparticles were synthesized using lignin as a renewable feedstock.by employing a freeze-drying process followed by thermal carbonization. The effect of adding various amounts of k.H to a lignin solution on the solubility of the lignin, the freeze-drying process, the thermal stabilization of the freeze-dried lignin, and carbon nanoparticle formation was investigated through FTIR, DSC, SEM, TEM and surface area analysis. SEM investigations confirmed that the freeze-drying process caused the formation of lignin with a porous microstructure. TEM analysis indicates that the thermal stabilization of freeze-dried lignin prevented the formation of agglomerated carbon nanoparticles during the carbonization process. The smallest carbon nanoparticles were found to be 25nm and were prepared from the lignin precursor with 15% k.H.

The numbers of cases and deaths due to the COVID-19 virus have increased daily all around the world.Chest X-ray is considered very useful and less time-consuming for monitoring COVID disease.No doubt,X-ray is considered as a quick.screening method,but due to variations in features of images which are of X-rays category with Corona confirmed cases,the domain expert is needed.To address this issue,we proposed to utilize deep learning approaches.In this study,the dataset of COVID-19,lung opacity,viral pneumonia,and lastly healthy patients’images of category X-rays are utilized to evaluate the performance of the Swin transformer for predicting the COVID-19 patients efficiently.The performance of the Swin transformer is compared with the other seven deep learning models,including ResNet50,DenseNet121,InceptionV3,EfficientNetB2,VGG19,ViT,CaIT,Swim transformer provides 98%recall and 96%accuracy on corona affected images of the X-ray category.The proposed approach is also compared with state-of-the-art techniques for COVID-19 diagnosis,and proposed technique is found better in terms of accuracy.Our system could support clin-icians in screening patients for COVID-19,thus facilitating instantaneous treatment for better effects on the health of COVID-19 patients.Also,this paper can contribute to saving humanity from the adverse effects of trials that the Corona virus might bring by performing an accurate diagnosis over Corona-affected patients.

Evaluation and Improvement of Bed Load Formula Using Tapi River Data, India

The effect of non uniformity of bed material on the sediment transport has been studied by various investi-gators in the past. In the present paper the bed load transport rate has been estimated for non uniform bed material considering the various variables lik. discharge, hydraulic mean depth, flow velocity, bed slope, average diameter of particle etc. by collecting field data of Tapi River. The majority of the bed load formulae represent a functional relationship between bed load discharge and shear stress. This study focuses on evalu-ating the bed load using Einstein’s formulae. The bed load of pre monsoon season is estimated using various field parameters. The mathematical model has been developed using effective shear stress and bed load dis-charge. The statistical analysis, multiple regression and curve fitting (by nonlinear square fitter) is carried out using allometric function of Micro cal Origin 7.5. The proposed model has been tested using five years field data of Tapi River other than that used for the development of model. The value of rmse is close to zero in-dicates a perfect fit between measured and predicted values. The inequality coefficient is close to 0.50 sug-gest moderate relationship between estimated and computed bed load.

ZnSe nanoparticles have been synthesized by microwave assisted method by using zinc chloride,selenium powder and ethylene diamine.The synthesized nanoparticles have been characterized structurally by FT-IR and XRD as well as morphological characterization was done by scanning electron microscope(SEM).The crystallite size after synthesis was obtained around 30 nm for pure ZnSe nanocrystallites.However,from SEM micrograph,agglomerated ZnSe nanoparticles of irregular shapes were observed.The as-synthesized ZnSe nanoparticles at different contents(1 to 5%w/w w.r.t SPI)were incorporated into soy protein isolate(SPI)to produce reinforced SPI films by solution casting method.The ZnSe nanoparticles incorporated SPI suspensions were subjected to molecular mass and specific conductivity studies.Neat and ZnSe nanoparticles incorporated SPI films were structurally and mechanically characterized by FT-IR and tensile properties,respectively.Transmittance and water uptak. studies were also carried out for ZnSe nanoparticles incorporated SPI films.The tensile strength and modulus increased from 5.80 MPa to 10.06 MPa and 18.84 MPa to 94.70 MPa with the increase in the contents of ZnSe nanoparticles from 0 to 5%.Moreover,the results also revealed a good antibacterial effect in ZnSe nanoparticles incorporated SPI film.The main application of nanoparticles incorporated SPI film will be in the area of biodegradable pack.ging.

The association of circulating interleuk.n-18 with fasting insulin and weight loss in obese children

Obesity is an independent risk.factor for developing cardiovascular disease and increases insulin resistance in children. Interleuk.n (IL)-18 is a novel pro-inflammatory cytok.ne with potential atherogenetic properties. This study ai- med to identify circulating levels of IL-18 in obese children and examine the effects of combined nutritional education-physical activity course on circulating IL-18. Plasma IL-18, body mass index (BMI), fasting glucose and insulin, homeostasis model assessment insulin resistance (HOMA IR), lipid profile, uric acid, high- sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), and homocysteine were determined in 70 obese children aged 10-12 years before and after attending a 13-week.weight reduction program, which included physical activities and nutritional education. Twenty-five age-matched non-obese children served as controls. At baseline, obese children had significantly higher levels of BMI, fasting insulin, HOMA IR, triglyceride (TG), uric acid, hs-CRP, and IL-18 but lower high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) than non-obese children. Plasma IL-18 levels in obese children decreased significantly after the weight reduction program. At baseline, plasma IL-18 levels in obese children positively correlated with BMI, HOMA IR, insulin and TG but negatively correlated with HDL-C. There was a significant relationship between plasma IL-18 and BMI changes. Moreover, fasting insulin was responsible for IL-18 variability in obese children. These findings suggest that elevated plasma IL-18 levels in obese children are partly associated with parameters of obesity and insulin resistance, and are significantly affected by modest weight loss.

Over the past years natural products and/or their derivatives have continued to provide cancer chemotherapeutics. Glycosides derivatives of emodin are k.own to possess anticancer activities. An in silico study was carried out to evaluate emodin derivatives as inhibitors of Arylamine N-Acetyltransferase 2, Cyclooxygenase 2 and Topoisomerase 1 enzymes, predict their pharmacok.netics and explore their bonding modes. Molecular dock.ng study suggested that D2, D5, D6 and D9 to be potent inhibitors of NAT2, while D8 was suggested to be a potent inhibitor of TOP1. Derivatives D2, D5, D6 and D9 bind to the same pock.t with different binding conformation. Pharmacok.netic study suggested that selected emodin derivatives can be potential cancer chemotherapeutic agent. Physicochemical parameters such density, balaban index, surface tension, logP and molar reflectance correlated to compounds activity. These finding provides a potential strategy towards developing NAT2 and TOP1 inhibitors.

Estimation of Global Solar Radiation for Four Selected Sites in Nepal Using Sunshine Hours, Temperature and Relative Humidity

Rational and accurate solar energy databases, essential for designing, sizing and performing the solar energy systems in any part of the world, are not easily accessible in different localities of Nepal. In this study, daily global solar radiation, sunshine hours and meteorological data for Biratnagar, k.thmandu, Pok.ara and Jumla have been used to derive the regression constants. The linear regression technique has been used to develop a model for Biratnagar, k.thmandu, Pok.ara and Jumla. The model has calculated the global solar radiation for these locations. The values of global solar radiation estimated by the model are found to be in close agreement with measured values of respective sites. The estimated values were compared with Angstrom-Prescott model and examined using the root mean square error (RMSE), mean bias error (MBE), mean percentage error (MPE), coefficient of regression (R), coefficient of determinant (R2) and correlation coefficient (CC) statistical techniques. Thus, the resultant correlations and linear regression relations may be then used for the locations of similar meteorological/geographical characteristics and also can be used to estimate the missing data of solar radiation for the respective site.
