Effect of friction on corrosion behaviors of AISI 304 and Cr26Mo1 stainless steels in different solutions

The corrosion and tribocorrosion behaviors of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel and Cr26Mo1 ultrapure high chromium ferrite stainless steel in 3.5 wt.%NaCl and 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solutions were investigated.Microelectrode electrochemical measurement technology was applied to identify electrochemistry behaviors during tribocorrosion tests in situ.The surface morphologies and compositions of the wear track. were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectrum.The results showed that compositions of stainless steels,corrosive mediums and applied loads have great influence on tribocorrosion behaviors of stainless steels.Firstly,the corrosion resistance in static state of stainless steels primarily dominates its tribocorrosion behavior;meanwhile,better mechanical properties are in favor of tribocorrosion resistance.Secondly,the corrosion rate is promoted significantly in 3.5%NaCl solution by friction,while the tendency is inconspicuous in 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solution.Last but not least,passive films on stainless steels can be wiped off by small friction force.With the increase in applied load,the effect of friction converts to forming friction oxide film from removing passivation film,so that a critical load exists below which the friction force can promote the corrosion process extremely.

Anomalous Atmospheric Circulation Associated with Recent West African Monsoon Rainfall Variability

The recent West African Monsoon (WAM) wet season (May to October) rainfall’s interannual variability has been examined with emphasis on the rainfall zones of Guinea Coast (GC), Western Sudano Sahel (WSS) and Eastern Sudano Sahel (ESS) in wet and dry years. Rainfall observations from Climate Research Unit (CRU) and Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Merged Analysis of Precipitation (CMAP), and atmospheric circulation fields from National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) were evaluated from 1979 to 2014. The objectives are to evaluate the trends across the zones and their linear relationship with the identified oceanic pulsations, as well as examine the evolution of the anomalous atmospheric circulation associated with the wet and dry years during the wet season months. The results show remark.ble variability across the rainfall zones. The areal averaged rainfall anomalies show significant correlation values of -0.2 with Ocean Nino Index (ONI) only on WSS and ESS respectively, whereas with South Atlantic Ocean Dipole Index (SAODI) it shows significant correlation value of 0.3 only on GC, at 95% Confidence Level from a t-test. The analysis of trends in spatial and temporal patterns of the atmospheric circulation fields has extensively presented attributes associated with the wet seasonal rainfall anomalies in the wet and dry years. FGOALS-s2 model showed an outstanding simulation of the spatial and temporal patterns of these attributes, with the discrepancies noted, hence presenting itself as a viable tool in the prediction of seasonal rainfall extremes over West Africa.

Medical waste management in Iraq:a case study of Baghdad

There is a lack.of information about medical waste management in Iraq.This study aims to monitor and evaluate the cur-rent situation of medical waste management in Baghdad as it represents the capital and the biggest populated city in Iraq.About 32%of hospitals are located in Baghdad.Ten state-owned hospitals in Baghdad with the biggest bed capacity were investigated.The study used structured interviews with staff in charge of waste management in the sampled hospitals to col-lect data.The results showed that the generation rate of medical waste in the ten hospitals was 0.5 k./(bed·day).The study also found that there were insufficient,ineffective,and improper isolation,collection,storing,processing,and safe disposal of medical wastes in the sampled public hospitals of Baghdad.The study recommended that the Iraqi Ministry of Health tak.s extensive and quick.effective measures to better monitor and evaluate medical waste management and provide ongoing training to personnel responsible for waste management in the hospitals.

Similarity solution for a spherical shock.wave with or without gravitational field in a dusty gas is studied under the action of monochromatic radiation. It is supposed that dusty gas be a mixture of perfect gas and micro solid particles. Equilibrium flow condition is supposed to be maintained and energy is varying which is continuously supplied by inner expanding surface. It is found that similarity solution exists under the constant initial density. The comparison between the solutions obtained in gravitating and non-gravitating medium is done. It is found that the shock.strength increases with an increase in gravitational parameter or ratio of the density of solid particles to the initial density of the gas, whereas an increase in the radiation parameter has decaying effect on the shock.waves.

Uncovering the softening mechanism and exploring the strengthening strategies in extremely fine nanograined metals:A molecular dynamics study

The strength of polycrystalline metals increases with decreasing grain size,following the classical HallPetch relationship.However,this relationship fails when softening occurs at very small grain sizes(typically less than 10 to 20 nm),which limits the development of ultrahigh-strength materials.In this work.using columnar-grained nanocrystalline Cu-Ag‘samples’,molecular dynamics simulations were performed to investigate the softening mechanism and explore the strengthening strategies(e.g.,formation of solid solution or grain boundary(GB)segregation)in extremely fine nanograined metals.Accordingly,the softening of pure metals is induced by atomic sliding in the GB layer,rather than dislocation activities in the grain interior,although both occur during deformation.The solid solution lowers the stack.ng fault energy and increases the GB energy,which leads to the softening of NC metals.GB segregation stabilizes GB structures,which causes a notable improvement in strength,and this improvement can be further enhanced by optimizing the solute concentration and GB excess.This work.deepens the understanding of the softening mechanism due to atomic sliding in the GB layer and the strengthening mechanism arising from tailoring the GB stability of immiscible alloys and provides insights into the design of ultrahighstrength materials.

SARS COV-2 infection causes acute and frequently severe respiratory disease with associated multi-organ damage and systemic disturbances in many biochemical pathways.Metabolic phenotyping provides deep insights into the complex immunopathological problems that drive the resulting COVID-19 disease and is also a source of novel metrics for assess-ing patient recovery.A multiplatform metabolic phenotyping approach to studying the pathology and systemic metabolic sequelae of COVID-19 is considered here,together with a framework.for assessing post-acute COVID-19 Syndrome(PACS)that is a major long-term health consequence for many patients.The sudden emergence of the disease presents a biological discovery challenge as we try to understand the pathological mechanisms of the disease and develop effective mitigation strategies.This requires technologies to measure objectively the extent and sub-phenotypes of the disease at the molecular level.Spectroscopic methods can reveal metabolic sub-phenotypes and new biomark.rs that can be monitored during the acute disease phase and beyond.This approach is scalable and translatable to other pathologies and provides as an exem-plar strategy for the investigation of other emergent zoonotic diseases with complex immunological drivers,multi-system involvements and diverse persistent symptoms.

During embryonic development,organs undergo distinct and programmed morphological changes as they develop into their functional forms.While genetics and biochemical signals are well recognized regulators of morphogenesis,mechanical forces and the physical properties of tissues are now emerging as integral parts of this process as well.These physical factors drive coordinated cell movements and reorganizations,shape and size changes,proliferation and differentiation,as well as gene expression changes,and ultimately sculpt any developing structure by guiding correct cellular architectures and compositions.In this review we focus on several craniofacial structures,including the tooth,the mandible,the palate,and the cranium.We discuss the spatiotemporal regulation of different mechanical cues at both the cellular and tissue scales during craniofacial development and examine how tissue mechanics control various aspects of cell biology and signaling to shape a developing craniofacial organ.
