Intrahepatic biliary cystic neoplasms:Surgical results of 9 patients and literature review

AIM: To investigate the eligible management of the cystic neplasms of the liver. METHODS: The charts of 9 patients who underwent surgery for intrahepatic biliary cystic liver neoplasms between 2003 and 2008 were reviewed retrospectively. Informed consent was obtained from the patients and approval was obtained from the designated review board of the institution. rESULTS: All patients were female with a median (range) age of 49 (27-60 years). The most frequent symptom was abdominal pain in 6 of the patients. Four patients had undergone previous laparotomy (with other diagnoses) which resulted in incomplete surgery or recurrences. Liver resection (n = 6) or enucleation (n = 3) was performed. The final diagnosis was intrahepaticbiliary cystadenoma in 8 patients and cystadenocarcinoma in 1 patient. All symptoms resolved after surgery. There has been no recurrence during a median (range) 31 (7-72) mo of follow up. CONCLUSION: In spite of the improvement in imaging modalities and increasing recognition of biliary cystadenoma and cystadenocarcinoma, accurate preoperative diagnosis may be difficult. Complete surgical removal (liver resection or enucleation) of these lesions yields satisfying long-term results.

Background:Cholangiocarcinoma(CCA)is a cancer type that builds in the bile ducts that carry digestive fluid,*** ducts connect the liver to the gallbladder and the small *** disease is often diagnosed at an advanced stage,resulting in a low 5-year survival *** study aims to evaluate the concentrations of serum thiol/disulfide in CCA patients and healthy volunteers and investigate the association between oxidative activity and clinical and pathological characteristics in CCA *** examining the relationship between reduced thiol/disulfide measures and tumorigenesis of the disease,we can potentially identify an unfavourable prognosis in CCA ***:To assess the status of thiol/disulfide in the blood of Cholangiocarcinoma patients using a novel automated homeostasis assay,we recruited 55 individuals for this study(CCA patients,n=27;healthy volunteers,n=28).We measured the levels of serum total thiol(TT)(–SH+–S-S–),native thiol(NT)(–SH),and disulfide(DD)(–S-S–)in both the CCA group and the control ***,we calculated the ratio of thiol/disulfide(–SH/–S-S–).results:We explored the relationship between oxidative activity and clinical and pathological characteristics in CCA *** study found no significant differences in age and sex between CCA patients and *** and TT levels were higher in the control group compared to the CCA ***,the disulfide level did not significantly differ between the two ***'s correlation matrix analysis revealed positive correlations between TT and NT levels and negative correlations between NT/TT%,DD level,and DD/TT%.Conclusion:Our findings suggest a statistical difference in serum thiol/disulfide *** a marker of total oxidant status,thiol and disulfide levels have decreased in patients with ***,no correlation was found between the tumour markers CEA and CA19-9 and thiol levels.A decrease in blood thiol and disulfide concentrations or the ratio

Pancreatic Involvement in Von Hippel-Lindau Syndrome: report of a Total Pancreatectomy Case and Literature review

Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) syndrome is a rare, autosomal dominantly inherited multicancer syndrome. Disease is predisposed by hemangioblastoma, renal cell carcinoma, pheochromocytoma, pancreatic islet cell and cystic tumors or epididymis tumors under the mutation or deletion at the tumor suppressor gene. Here we report a 42-year-old woman who had been operated for cerebellar hemangioblastoma and retinal angioma, and presented with recurrent, mild abdominal pain. In radiological imaging studies, multiple pancreatic cysts without nodulation were determined. Because of the mild abdominal pain and uncertain malignant potential of the cysts, total pancreatectomy was performed. She was discharged at the fifteenth day after the surgery without any problem. The patient has been followed for 62 months without any problem, and her diabetes mellitus is being controlled by medication.
