Glyphosate Resistance in Giant Ragweed (<i>Ambrosia trifida</i>L.) from Mississippi Is Partly Due to Reduced Translocation

A giant ragweed population from a glyphosate-resistant (GR) soybean field in Mississippi, USA was suspected to be resistant to glyphosate. Greenhouse and laboratory studies were conducted to confirm and quantify the magnitude of glyphosate resistance in a resistant biotype selected from this population and to elucidate possible physiological and molecular mechanisms of glyphosate resistance. Glyphosate dose response studies indicated that ED50 (effective dose required to reduce plant growth by 50%) values for glyphosate-resistant (GR-MS) and glyphosate-susceptible (GS-MS) biotypes, based on percent injury, were 0.52 and 0.34 kg ae/ha glyphosate, respectively, indicating a 1.5-fold level of resistance in GR-MS. The absorption pattern of 14C-glyphosate in the two giant ragweed biotypes was similar throughout the measured time course of 168 h after treatment (HAT). The amount of 14C-glyphosate that translocated out of treated leaves of the GR-MS and GS-MS plants was similar up to 24 HAT. However, the GS-MS biotype translocated more (71% and 76% of absorbed at 48 and 96 HAT, respectively) 14C-glyphosate than the GR-MS biotype (44% and 66% of absorbed at 48 and 96 HAT, respectively) out of the treated leaf. No target site mutation was identified at the Pro106 location of the EPSPS gene of the GR-MS biotype. The mechanism of resistance to glyphosate in giant ragweed from Mississippi, at least, is due to reduced glyphosate translocation.

Relationship of High Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein with Cardiovascular, Diabetic, and Hepatic Biomarkers

Biomarkers are early predictors of various disorders, circulating level of C-reactive protein is a sensitive biomarker of systemic inflammation and may also be associated with the development of diabetic, hepatic, and cardiovascular diseases. In the present study, we aimed to investigate the association between circulating levels of high sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and various biomarkers for hepatic, diabetic, and cardiovascular health. The retrospective analysis included 438 individuals who were tested for these panels simultaneously at Vibrant America Clinical Laboratory. The study population included free-living individuals without any preexisting clinical conditions. Among the cardiovascular markers, a positive correlation and significant association was found between high levels of hs-CRP and serum levels of triglycerides (r = 0.0964, p −0.1423, p −0.1216, p < 0.0105) with circulating levels of hs-CRP. Among all the diabetic markers, glucose (r = 0.1547, p < 0.0011) and glycated serum protein (r = 0.1725, p < 0.0003) were positively correlated with circulating hs-CRP. In the hepatic panel, AST, a transaminase that plays a vital role in amino acid metabolism, was found to have a strong positive correlation with hs-CRP (r = 0.2139, p < 0.0001). In conclusion, the results clearly show the association of hs-CRP with diabetic, hepatic, and cardiovascular risk factors indicating its central value as a key marker for several lifestyle-associated disorders.

Experimental tests have been carried out to evaluate the performance,emission and combustion characteristics of a diesel engine using neat sea lemon oil and its blends of 25%,50%,&75%and standard diesel fuel *** common problems posed when using vegetable oil in a compression ignition engine are poor atomization,carbon deposits,ring sticking *** is because of the high viscosity and low volatility of vegetable *** blended with diesel,sea lemon oil presented lower viscosity,improved volatility,better combustion and less carbon *** was found that there was reduction in NO for neat sea lemon oil and its diesel blends along with marginal increase in smoke,HC and CO emissions compared to that of standard *** thermal efficiency was slightly lower for neat sea lemon oil and its diesel *** the combustion analysis,it was found that sea lemon oil-diesel blends performed better than neat sea lemon oil.

Rice sheath blight disease （ShB）, caused by Rhizoctonia solani, gives rise to significant grain yield losses. The present study evaluated the efficacy of Integral, the commercial liquid formulation of Bacillus subtilis strain MBI 600, against rice ShB and for plant growth promotion. In greenhouse studies, four log concentrations of Integral （from 2.2×10^6 to 2.2×10^9 cfu/mL） were used as seed treatment （ST）. After 25 d, seedlings were dipped （SD） into Integral prior to transplanting. At 30 d after transplanting （DAT）, leaf sheaths were inoculated with immature sclerotia of the pathogen. At 45 DAT, a foliar spray （FS） with Integral was applied to some treatments. The fungicide control was 50% carbendazim at 1.0 g/L, and a nontreated control was also included. Overall, there were 10 treatments, each with five replications. ShB severity was rated at 52 DAT, and seedling height and number of tillers per plant were rated at 60 DAT. In 2009, two field trials evaluated Integral at 2.2×10^8 and 2.2×10^9 cfu/mL. Integral was applied as ST, and seedlings were produced in a nursery bed. After 32 d, seedlings were treated with Integral as SD and transplanted into 10 m^2 blocks. Foliar sprays were given at 45 and 60 DAT. There were seven treatments, each with eight replications arranged as a factorial randomized complete block design. At 20 DAT, the plots were broadcast inoculated with R. solani produced on rice grains. Seedling height before transplanting, ShB severity at 90 DAT, and grain yield at harvest were recorded. Integral at 2.2×10^9 cfu/mL provided significant increase of seedling heights over other treatments under greenhouse conditions. The Integral treatments of ST ＋ SD ＋ FS at 2.2×10^9 cfu/mL significantly suppressed ShB over other treatments. In field studies, Integral provided significant increase of seedling height in nursery, and number of tillers per plant, compared with the control. Information on the effect of sulfur (S) or sulfur+nitrogen (S + N) on soybean seed composition is scarce. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the effects of S, and S + N fertilizers on soybean [(Glycine max (L.) Merr.)] seed composition in the Early Soybean Production System (ESPS) under irrigated (I) and nonirrigated (NI) environments. Two separate field experiments were conducted from 2005 to 2007. One experiment was irrigated, and the second experiment was nonirrigated. Under I condition, S at a rate of 44.8 kg/ha alone or with N at 112 kg/ha resulted in a consistent increase in seed protein and oleic acid concentrations, and a decrease in oil and linolenic acid concentrations compared with the control (C). For example, in 2006 and compared with the C, application of S + N increased the percentage up to 11.4% and 48.5% for protein and oleic acid, respectively. However, oil concentration decreased by 3%. Protein and oleic acid increase were accompanied by a higher percentage of leaf and seed N and S. Under NI conditions, seed protein and oleic acid concentrations were significantly higher in C than in any S or S + N treatments, but the oil and linolenic acid concentrations were significantly lower. The results indicate that specific rate of S alone or S + N combined can alter seed composition under irrigated or nonirrigated conditions. This knowledge may help plant breeders to develop and release cultivars to suit specific target locations to grow new value-added soybeans or select for specific seed composition traits under specific environmental stress factors such as drought.

自然界的复杂流体体系绝大部分由非球形颗粒构成。长期以来,理论和实验都从不同角度对这类体系的流变行为进行了详细探讨。理论上,Jeffrey对椭球体流变行为的理论计算开启了类似体系理论研究的先河,随后Brosema、Brenner等从不同角度对棒状颗粒构成的复杂流体进行了扩充。Batchleor则对这类体系的轴向拉升流场下的流变行为进行了研究。实验上,早期主要集中在表征不同长度的棒状纤维的流变行为,在一定程度上吻合了理论的预测。过去的十几年,人们对由无机颗粒如针状的赤铁矿、棒状的二氧化硅颗粒、碟状的黏土颗粒以及生物相关的棒状体系如F-actin等构成的模型体系进行了广泛深入的实验研究。随着纳米科学的兴起,碳纳米管构成的复合材料的流变行为是近期的一个研究热点。然而,目前为止的实验模型不可避免地具有尺寸不均一性和颗粒表面物化性质的不确定性等问题,导致实验结果的不可重复性以及与理论的不可比性。在本项目中,基于棒状病毒,结合基因控制和表面化学改性,构建了一类尺寸单一、刚性和表面性质可控的非球形颗粒的复杂流体体系,并对这类体系构成的凝胶进行了详细的流变表征,建立起微观结构与宏观流变行为之间的关系。将表面接枝有高分子刷的棒状病毒分散到甘油等高黏度的牛顿流体后,采用两种不同的技术手段对该体系的轴向拉升流场下的流变行为进行了研究,并与Batchleor等人的理论研究进行了比较。

Time-series observations were conducted in the Dowleiswaram dam reservoir that was constructed on the largest monsoonal river in India to understand the source of inorganic carbon, and fluxes to the atmosphere. The reservoir stores water during dry period of six months and water increases during the period when Indian subcontinent receives significant rainfall. Significant modification of organic matter was noticed during storage period indicated by decrease in pH from 7.5 to 6.4 and oxygen saturation from ~95% to 65%. The relationship of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) with oxygen saturation, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and isotopic ratios of DIC suggests that heterotrophic activities are the major source of inorganic carbon to the reservoir. In addition to this, ground water exchange also contributes significantly to the inorganic carbon pool in the reservoir. Nutrients released due to decomposition of organic matter in the reservoir supports both autotrophic and heterotrophic activities. The pCO2 levels in the reservoir varied between 3944 and 16,042 μatm and higher pCO2 levels were noticed during peak discharge period. The annual mean CO2 fluxes from the reservoir amounted to 112 ± 126 mmolC m-2·d-1 and ~6 times higher fluxes were noticed during discharge period compared to dry period and such high fluxes during discharge period were contributed by both high pCO2 levels and winds. It was further noticed that dam reservoir is a strong source of pCO2 to the estuary wherein 2 during dry period and >15,000 μatm during discharge period were observed. Our study also indicates that Dowleiswaram dam reservoir is a strong source of CO2 to atmosphere, even though it is much smaller than Brazilian (tropical) reservoir but higher than European reservoirs.

Objective: To investigate the chemical composition, in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activity of Mentha longifolia L. essential oils using aqueous extract. Methods: Mentha longifolia L. essential oils were extracted using hydrodistillation with Clevenger apparatus for 3 h and the yield of the essential oil was calculated. Essential oils were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed with gas chromatography and gas chromatography-mass spectrometer. For these essential oils, antibacterial and antifungal activity against human pathogens were evaluated. Results: Nineteen chemical constituents representing 99.72% of the essential oil were found, comprising menthone (39.55%), isopulegone (30.49%), eucalyptol (10.38%), and α-terpineol (3.15%);these were major components, and others were minor components. The essential oil showed strong antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus [(35.24 ± 0.13) mm], Enterococcus faecalis [(32.12 ± 0.12) mm] and Bacillus cereus [(30.06 ± 0.04) mm], as well as antifungal activity against Aspergillus flavus [(38.02 ± 0.06) mm], Alternaria alternaria [(35.26 ± 0.12) mm], and Penicillum spp ((34.14 ± 0.02) mm)Conclusions: It seems that the essential oils derived from the Mentha longifolia L. species could be used as a natural source of antimicrobial agents.
