Objective To estimate the heavy metal content in soil and selected medicinal plants procured from environmentally different sites of the same city. Methods Soil and plant samples of Abutilon indicum, Calotropis procera, Euphorbia hirta, Peristrophe bycaliculata, and Tinospora cordifolia were collected from 3 environmentally different sites of the city： heavy traffic area （HTA）, industrial area （IA）, and residential area （RA）. Pb by inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry and compared Cd, Cr, and Ni were estimated in soil and plant samples Results The level of heavy metal was higher in soil than in plant parts studied. Accumulation of heavy metals varied from plant to plant. Pb was the highest in Calotropis procera root from HTA site and the lowest in Peristrophe bycaliculata whole plant from IA site. It was also lower in residential area than in heavy traffic area. Conclusion The level of heavy metal content differed in the same medicinal plant collected from environmentally different sites of the same city. Thus, it reiterates our belief that every medicinal plant sample should be tested for contaminant load before processing it further for medication.

Novel red emitting Eu3＋ doped SrGd2O4 phosphors were synthesized by homogeneous precipitation method followed by a subsequent combustion process at various temperatures. A systematic study on the consequent structural evolution and optical properties were investigated as a function of various processing temperatures. With the enhancement of processing temperature, SrGd2O4 phosphor showed a gradual transformation from a mixed phase to monophasic nature, with minimized volatile imptwities. The microscopic images exhibited homogeneous aggregates of varying shapes and sizes with an average length of about 0.5-5μl. Eu3＋ doped SrGd2O4 phosphors prepared at low temperatures, showed miserably low values of red emission upon UV excitation owing to the presence of volatile impurities. The SrGd2O4：Eu3＋ phosphors prepared at relatively high temperature exhibited strong red-orange emissions due to homogeneously occupied Eu3＋ ions in the host lattice. The dominant red to orange （R/O） emission intensity ratios and CIE parameters of EU3＋ ions substantiated the site occupation of higher asymmetry sites of Gd3＋ ions and the strong covalent nature. Dexter theory and critical distance calculation suggested that the dipole-dipole interaction could be responsible for the concentration quenching of Eu3＋（4 mol.%） doped SrGd2O4 phosphors. Elevated physical and chemical durability and stable photoluminescence made these phosphors suitable for white LEDs and other display applications.

An on-board charger for efficiently charging multiple battery-operated electric vehicles(EVs)is *** has evolved as a single-input dual-output(SIDO)integrated boost-single ended primary inductor converter(SEPIC)fly-back converter,offering cost-effectiveness,reliability,and higher efficiency compared to conventional chargers with equivalent *** proposed system includes an additional regulated output terminal,in addition to an existing terminal for charging the EV battery of a 4-wheeler,which can be used to charge another EV battery,preferably a *** the aid of control techniques,unity power factor operations are obtained during constant-voltage(CV)/constant-current(CC)charging for the grid-to-vehicle(G2V)operating *** mathematical modelling analysis,the proposed system is developed in a Matlab/Simulink environment,and the results are validated in a real-time simulator using *** proposed system is employed for charging the batteries of two EVs with capacities of 400 V,40 A·h and 48 V,52 A·h for the 4-wheeler and 2-wheeler,*** performance is investigated under different operating modes and over a wide range of supply voltage variations to ensure safe and reliable operation of the charger.

Progranulin （PGRN） is a growth factor implicated in various pathophysiological processes, including wound healing, inflammation, tumorigenesis, and neurodegeneration. It was previously reported that PGRN binds to tumor necrosis factor receptors （TNFR） and has thera- peutic effects in inflammatory arthritis （Tang et. al, in Science 332：478-484, 2011）; however, Chen et al. reported their inability to demonstrate the PGRN-TNFR interactions under their own conditions （Chert et. al, in J Neurosci 33：9202-9213, 2013）. A letter-to-editor was then published by the original group in response to the Chen et al. paper that discussed the reasons for the latter＇s inability to recapitulate the interactions. In addition, the group published follow-up studies that further reinforced and dissected the interactions of PGRN- TNFR. Recently, the dispute about the legitimacy of PGRN-TNFR interactions appears to be finally settled with independent confirmations of these interactions in various conditions by numerous laboratories. This review presents a chronological update on the story of PGRN-TNFR interactions, highlighting the independent confirmations of these interactions in various diseases and conditions.

Culm characteristics of Melocanna baccifera, locally ＇muli＇, culms at five different culm ages of 11 girth classes （5-6 to 15-16 cm） were studied from Cachar Dis- trict of southern Assam, northeast India. We recorded internode length, internode diameter, number of internodes per culm, total culm height, total culm green weight and total culm volume of all five culm age classes. Data were gathered on 165 culms, each culm age class containing 33 culms with 3 culms per girth class. Culm height ranged from 3.2 to 15.3 m with highest mean of 9.15 m （in threeyear old culms） and maximum culm height was recorded in four-year old culms. Highest mean and maximum internode length （27.45 and 54.2 cm, respectively）, internode diameter （3.12 and 4.75 cm, respectively） and total culm green weight （5.42 and 12.87 kg/culm, respectively） were recorded in three-year old culms and lowest in current-year culms. Best fitted regression models for all parameters were developed. Significant linear relationships between culm green weight and culm solid volume were documented for all five culm age classes. Their corresponding best-fit regression models were also developed.

Low desiccation resistance of Drosophila ananassae reflects its rarity outside the humid tropics. However, the ability of this sensitive species to evolve under seasonally varying subtropical areas is largely unknown. D. ananassae flies are mostly lighter during the rainy season but darker and lighter flies occur in the autumn season in northern India. We tested the hypothesis whether seasonally varying alternative body color phenotypes of D. ananassae vary in their levels of environmental stress tolerances and mating behavior. Thus, we investigated D. ananassae flies collected during rainy and autumn seasons for changes in body melanization and their genetic basis, desiccation-related traits, cold tolerance and mating propensity. On the basis of genetic crosses, we found total body color dimorphism consistent with a single gene model in both sexes olD. ananassae. A significant increase in the frequency of the dark morph was observed during the drier autumn season, and body color phenotypes showed significant deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, which suggests climatic selection plays a role. Resistance to desiccation as well as cold stress were two- to three-fold higher in the dark body color strain as compared with the light strain. On the basis of no-choice mating experiments, we observed significantly higher assortative matings between dark morphs under desiccation or cold stress, and between light morphs under hot or higher humidity conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the ecological significance of seasonally varying total body color dimorphism in a tropical species, D. ananassae.

Effects of Tillage Practices and Land Use Management on Soil Aggregates and Soil Organic Carbon in the North Appalachian Region,USA

Promoting soil carbon sequestration in agricultural land is one of the viable strategies to decelerate the observed climate changes. However, soil physical disturbances have aggravated the soil degradation process by accelerating erosion. Thus, reducing the magnitude and intensity of soil physical disturbance through appropriate farming/agricultural systems is essential to management of soil carbon sink capacity of agricultural lands. Four sites of different land use types/tillage practices, i） no-till （NT） corn （Zea mays L.）（NTC）, ii） conventional till （CT） corn （CTC）, iii） pastureland （PL）, and iv） native forest （NF）, were selected at the North Appalachian Experimental Watershed Station, Ohio, USA to assess the impact of NT farming on soil aggregate indices including water-stable aggregation, mean weight diameter （MWD） and geometric mean diameter （GMD）, and soil organic carbon and total nitrogen contents. The NTC plots received cow manure additions （about 15 t ha-1） every other year. The CTC plots involved disking and chisel ploughing and liquid fertilizer application （110 L ha-l）. The results showed that both water-stable aggregation and MWD were greater in soil for NTC than for CTC. In the 0-10 cm soil layer, the 〉 4.75-mm size fraction dominated NTC and was 46% more than that for CTC, whereas the 〈 0.25-mm size fraction was 380% more for CTC than for NTC. The values of both MWD and GMD in soil for NTC （2.17 mm and 1.19 mm, respectively） were higher than those for CTC （1.47 and 0.72 mm, respectively） in the 0-10 cm soil layer. Macroaggregates contained 6%-42% and 13%-43% higher organic carbon and total nitrogen contents, respectively, than microaggregates in soil for all sites. Macroaggregates in soil for NTC contained 40% more organic carbon and total nitrogen over microaggregates in soil for CTC. Therefore, a higher proportion of microaggregates with lower organic carbon contents created a carbon-depleted environment for CTC. In contrast, soil for NTC had mor

Members of the receptor tyrosine kinase family, that include EGFR, ErbB-2/HER-2, ErbB-3/HER-3 and ErbB-4/ HER-4, are frequently implicated in experimental models of epithelial cell neoplasia as well as in human cancers. Therefore, interference with the activation of these growth factor receptors represents a promising strategy for de- velopment of novel and selective anticancer therapies. Indeed, a number of inhibitors that target either EGFR or HER-2, with the exception of a few that target both; have been developed for treatment of epithelial cancers. Since most solid tumors express different ErbB receptors and/or their ligands, identification of inhibitor(s), targeting multiple EGFR family members may provide a therapeutic benefit to a broader patient population. Here we describe the significance of an ErbB family of receptors in epithelial cancers, and summarize different available therapeutics targeting these receptors. It also emphasizes the need to develop pan-ErbB inhibitors and discusses EGF-Receptor Related Protein, a recently isolated negative regulator of EGFR as a potential pan-ErbB therapeutic for a wide vari- ety of epithelial cancers.
