Cassava Yield, Garrification Traits and Economic Retu.ns as Influ.nced by Different Genotypes in an u.tisol

Field trials were condu.ted at the u.iversity of u.o Teaching and Research Farm in 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 to evalu.te cassava yield, garrification traits, and economic retu.ns as influ.nced by genotypes grown in an u.tisol. u.o is located between latitu.es 4°30' and 5°27'N and longitu.es 7°50'E and 80°20'E. The area, which lies within the hu.id tropical rainforest zone of sou.heastern Nigeria, has an annu.l mean rainfall of 2500 mm with a bimodal rainfall pattern, monthly su.shine of 3.14 hou.s, and a mean annu.l temperatu.e of 28°C. The experimental site was previou.ly pu. into cu.tivation of some arable crops su.h as flu.ed pu.pkin, okra, and waterleaf before it was fallowed for two years. A randomized complete block design, replicated three times was u.ed. Treatments were 16 cassava genotypes (AR1-82, NR02/0028, NR03/0174, CR12-45, NR03/0211, TMS98/2132, TMS01/1206, TMS01/1368, TMS01/1371, CR36-5, NR02/0007, NR03/0155, AR37-108, TMS01/1412, TMS30572 and local best variety “Obu.it okpo”). Resu.ts obtained via combined (pooled) analysis of the two seasons indicated that cassava yield differed significantly among the genotypes. NR02/0018 (42.50 t/ha) ou.-yielded others by 17% - 52% followed by NR 02/0007 (35.42 t/ha), and NR 03/0155 (32.08 t/ha). TMS 98/2132 had the most preferred garrification attribu.es followed by NR 02/0018, NR 02/0007, and NR03/01155. NR 02/0018 genotype gave the highest economic retu.ns followed by NR 02/0007 and NR03/0155. NR02/0018 su.erseded others in yield, garrification traits, and economic retu.ns, which is therefore recommended.

In this work, seismic refraction was u.ed to obtain elastic properties (shear modu.u. (μ), You.g modu.u. (E), Bu.k modu.u. (K) and lithological information in u.o and its environ as an aid to engineering fou.dation. u.ing seismic refraction method, the top and weathered layer of the engineering fou.dation in the stu.y area was investigated to determine the elastic parameters of top soil and also assess the strength of engineering fou.dation based on the parameter distribu.ion. A 24-channel signal enhancement seismograph, geophones, sledge hammer and a metal plate (sou.ce) for generating seismic waves were u.ed. The stu.y area lies between latitu.es 4˚45' and 5˚15'N and between longitu.es 7˚45' and 8˚30'E in the Niger Delta region of sou.hern Nigeria. Geologically, the area is located in the Tertiary to Qu.ternary Coastal Plain Sands (CPS) (otherwise called the Benin Formation) and Allu.iu. environments of the Niger Delta region of sou.hern Nigeria. Shear Modu.u. had average valu.s of 0.43 × 10u.>8u.> N/mu.>2u.> and 1.40 × 10u.>8u.> N/mu.>2u.> for layers 1 and 2 respectively. The average valu.s of the You.g Modu.u. for layers 1 and 2 were determined as 2.32 × 10u.>8u.> N/mu.>2u.> and 3.84 × 10u.>8u.> N/mu.>2u.> respectively. The average valu.s of the bu.k Modu.u. for layers 1 and 2 were estimated as 1.52 × 10u.>8u.> N/mu.>2u.> and 4.93 × 10u.>8u.> N/mu.>2u.> respectively.

The relationship between Nigerian Bonny Light cru.e oil (NBLCO) indu.ed hypoglycaemia and endogenou. seru. insu.in concentration;the role of antioxidant vitamin C or E su.plementation was the focu. of this stu.y. Forty adu.t male Wistar rats were randomly divided into grou. I, which served as the control, grou. II, which was oral gavaged 6 ml/kg of NBLCO, grou.s III and IV, which were in addition to 6 ml/kg of NBLCO su.plemented with 9 ml/kg and 1 mg/kg of vitamin E or C, respectively for 28 days. Resu.ts showed that NBLCO significantly (p u.plementation. The NBLCO significantly (p u.ed fasting blood glu.ose (FBG) when compared with control, the antioxidant vitamins su.plementation significantly (p u.e oil effect. The mean seru. insu.in level in NBLCO, vitamin E or C su.plemented grou.s is not significantly different from the control. There was no significant correlation between FBG and fasting seru. insu.in concentrations in all the grou.s on day 28. It has been demonstrated in this stu.y that direct oral ingestion of cru.e oil (NBLCO) cou.d redu.e food intake, body weight and cau.e hypoglycemia;the hypoglycemia may not be a fu.ction of seru. insu.in concentration. Interestingly, the hazardou. effects of NBLCO cou.d be ameliorated with antioxidant vitamin C or E su.plementation.
