Orthopedic implants rely on facilitating a robust interaction between the implant material surface and the surrounding bone ***,the interface will encourage osseointegration with the host bone,resulting in strong fixation and implant ***,implant failure can occur due to the lack of integration with bone tissue or bacterial *** chosen material and surface topography of orthopedic implants are key factors that influence the early events following implantation and may ultimately define the success of a *** attachment,rapid migration and improved differentiation of stem cells to osteoblasts are necessary to populate the surface of biomedical implants,potentially preventing biofilm formation and implant-associated *** article explores these early stem cell specific events by seeding human mesenchymal stem cells(mSCs)on four clinically relevant materials:polyether ether ketone(PEEK),Ti6Al4V(smooth Ti),macro-micro rough Ti6Al4V(Endoskeleton®),and macro-micro-nano rough Ti6Al4V(nanoLOCK®).The results demonstrate the incorporation of a hierarchical macro-micro-nano roughness on titanium produces a stellate morphology typical of mature osteoblasts/osteocytes,rapid and random migration,and improved osteogenic differentiation in seeded *** suggests rapid coverage of a surface by stem cells coupled with stimulation of bone differentiation minimizes the opportunity for biofilm formation while increasing the rate of device integration with the surrounding bone tissue.

Power analysis is a key component of planning prospective studies such as clinical ***,some journals in biomedical and psychosocial sciences request power analysis for data already collected and analysed before acceptingmanuscripts for *** have raised concerns about the conceptual basis for such post-hoc power *** recently,Zhang et al showed by using simulation studies that such power analyses do not indicate true power for detecting statistical significance since post-hoc power estimates vary in the range of practical interests and can be very different from the true *** the other hand,journals'request for information about the reliability of statistical findings in a manuscript due to small sample sizes is justified since the sample size plays an important role in the reproducibility of statistical *** problem is the wording of the journals'request,as the current power analysis paradigm is not designed to address journals'concerns about the reliability of the statistical *** this paper,we propose an alternate formulation of power analysis to provide a conceptually valid approach to the journals'wrongly worded but practically significant concern.

Objective The purpose of this study was to assess knowledge of and barriers to osteopathic medicine in Chinese immigrant communities in New York City(NYC).Design A cross-sectional study was designed in which a culturally appropriate survey in Chinese and English versions was administered anonymously to measure immigrant perceptions and knowledge of osteopathic *** Data collection occurred in the municipal delineations for the Chinatown neighbourhood within the New York,New York borough of *** Community members were selected using convenience sampling from high-density areas to *** gathered from the survey included demographics,education level,healthcare habits and knowledge of the osteopathic *** 120 surveys were conducted with 68 males and 52 females,with an average age=*** in the age range of 18-29 years,those with fluent English-language proficiency,and participants with graduate-level education status demonstrated a higher proportion of knowledge of osteopathic manipulative medicine and osteopathic physicians(doctors of osteopathic medicine)among the study *** Compared with research on the general US population,a general lack of knowledge of osteopathic medicine exists within NYC’s Chinese immigrant *** this difference may be ascribed to linguistics and ethnosociological factors,greater outreach and education is needed in urban minority communities to make immigrants aware of all healthcare resources available during the current shortage of US primary care physicians.

The Eliashberg theory of superconductivity accounts for the fundamental physics of conventional superconductors,including the retardation of the interaction and the Coulomb pseudopotential,to predict the critical temperature T_(c).mcmillan,Allen,and Dynes derived approximate closed-form expressions for the critical temperature within this theory,which depends on the electron–phonon spectral functionα^(2)F(ω).Here we show that modern machine-learning techniques can substantially improve these formulae,accounting for more general shapes of theα^(2)F *** symbolic regression and the SISSO framework,together with a database of artificially generatedα^(2)F functions and numerical solutions of the Eliashberg equations,we derive a formula for T_(c)that performs as well as Allen–Dynes for low-T_(c)superconductors and substantially better for higher-T_(c)*** corrects the systematic underestimation of Tc while reproducing the physical constraints originally outlined by Allen and *** equation should replace the Allen–Dynes formula for the prediction of higher-temperature superconductors.

Slingshot spiders use their conical webs to launch themselves at high speeds to catch *** built a launching mechanism inspired by the slingshot *** launch mechanisms comprise a steel structure with eye bolts to hold a conical web made from latex rubber *** pull the web by a winch using a lever arm.A quick-release mechanism connects the web to the winch using a tough-grid *** we release the quick-return mechanism,the projectile material consisting of a steel ball achieved an acceleration of 5107 m s^(-2) or 521 times gravity,and a speed of 66.41 m s^(-1).The power per unit mass and energy per unit mass of our prototype was one tenth and one fifth that of the spider’s web *** particular,we found that web structure consisting multiple radial web elements reinforced with circumferential web elements provide enhanced stiffness;as a comparison our web had a stiffness of about eight times that of traditional slingshot with a single radial web *** results suggest that adapting designs from nature can lead to potentially superior performance of man-made contraptions.

Network application identification is one of the core elements in network operations and management to provide enhanced network service and security. For accurate identification, an approach using common patterns called "signatures" is widely used to compensate the limitations of the traditional transport-layer port-based classification. However, our simulation results indicate that using the signatures generated from a set of well known algorithms may lead to very poor identification performance, with less than 60% of true positives even in an optimal case. To improve the quality of signatures, we present a technique in this paper, which consists of two steps:(i) pairwise merging to consider every possible combination of the initially collected signatures to reduce their specificity that causes the signatures to be less common;and (ii) signature reduction to identify effective signatures with greater importance from a large set of signatures produced in the merging step, so as to manage the space/time complexity in the identification process for greater scalability. Our experimental results show that the proposed technique can dramatically improve the performance, even with a small number of signatures (e.g., 95% true positives rate with 30 signatures per application) which is more compact than the initial signature set.

Thermoelectric technology,which is characterized by the interconversion between heat and electricity,is demonstrated as an efficient and environmentally friendly route for thermal energy harvesting and solid-state cooling *** pursuit for high-performance room temperature thermoelectric materials is of significant ***,we proposed a design strategy to dramatically improve the thermoelectric response by constructing a hierarchical multiscale conductor network(AgNWs/CNT)in polymer matrix(PEDOT:PSS).At the optimized composition,the highest Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of base treated ternary PEDOT:PSS/AgNWs/CNT composite are optimized to be 58.6μV K^(-1)and~1950 S ***,the power factor is thus calculated to be on the order of 670μV m^(-1)K^(-2),which is among one of the highest values compared with previous *** underlying mechanism is illustrated based on detailed structure,morphology and electron transport *** work affords a novel strategy for the future development of high-performance room temperature nanocomposite thermoelectrics.

Protein microarrays based on fluorescence detection have been widely utilized for high-throughput functional proteomic analysis. However, a drawback of such assays has been low sensitivity and narrow dynamic range, limiting their capabilities, especially for detecting low abundance biological molecules such as cytokines in human samples. Here, we present fluorescence-enhancing microarrays on plasmonic gold films for multiplexed cytokine detection with up to three orders of magnitude higher sensitivity than on conventional nitrocellulose and glass substrates. Cytokine detection on the gold plasmonic substrate is about one to two orders of magnitude more sensitive than enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay （ELISA） and can be multiplexed. A panel of six cytokines （Vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF）, Interleukin 1β （IL-1β）, Interleukin 4 （IL-4）, Interleukin 6 （IL-6）, Interferon γ （IFN-γ）, and Tumor necrosis factor （TNF）） were detected in the culture media of cancer cells. This work establishes a new method of high throughput multiplexed cytokine detection with higher sensitivity and dynamic range than ELISA.

Aim:Immunotherapy and immune checkpoint inhibitors(ICI)have changed cancer care for many patients;however,breast cancers have exhibited minimal response to single agent ICI *** is a significant need to identify novel targets capable of increasing cancer cell immunogenicity and response to ICIs in breast *** activated protein kinase(mAPK)signaling is essential for many cellular processes but the relationship between mAPK signaling and cancer cell immunogenicity is less well *** reports suggest that mEK inhibition(mEKi)affects the tumor-immune microenvironment by altering the expression of interferon responsive PD-L1 and mHC-I through unknown ***:Using western blotting and flow cytometry,we sought to determine whether mEKi affects JAK-STAT signaling upstream of PD-L1 and mHC-I expression in a panel of mouse mammary cancer and triple negative breast cancer cell ***:The cell lines tested exhibited increased STAT activation in response to mEKi ***,mEKi-induced mHC-I and PD-L1 expression are dependent upon STAT1 in mmTV-Neu ***,mEKiinduced STAT activation and interferon-responsive protein expression are abrogated with ErbB-family inhibitor co-treatment in mmTV-Neu cells,suggesting ErbB receptor signaling dependence,but not in basal-like cell ***,analysis of basal-like breast cancer patient samples exhibited an inverse relationship between STAT1 and Ras/mAPK activation ***:These findings suggest that mAPK signaling and STAT activation are inversely related in both mouse and human mammary *** work also supports further study of mEKi to increase STAT signaling and potentially,immunotherapy responses through increased mHC-I and PD-L1 expression.
