We outline here an approach for understanding the biology of climate change,one that integrates data at multiple spatial and temporal ***-free trait analysis,or“ecometrics,”is based on the idea that the distribution in a community of ecomorphological traits such as tooth structure,limb proportions,body mass,leaf shape,incubation temperature,claw shape,any aspect of anatomy or physiology can be measured across some subset of the organisms in a *** of temporal or spatial scale,traits are the means by which organisms interact with their environment,biotic and *** measures these interactions by focusing on traits which are easily measurable,whose structure is closely related to their function,and whose function interacts directly with local *** trait distributions are thus a comparatively universal metric for exploring systems dynamics at all *** main challenge now is to move beyond investigating how future climate change will affect the distribution of organisms and how it will impact ecosystem services and to shift the perspective to ask how biotic systems interact with changing climate in general,and how climate change affects the interactions within and between the components of the whole biotic-physical *** believe that it is possible to provide believable,quantitative answers to these *** of this we have initiated an IUBS program iCCB(integrative Climate Change Biology).

通过分析华北晚中新世保德期三个经典地点的羚羊牙齿釉质之稳定碳同位素,结合相同地点的单纯食叶者(鹿科)与食草者(三趾马)的数据,推断其食性取向。结果显示这些晚中新世生态系统中C_3植物占据主导地位,但也含有一小部分的C_4植物(可能小于30%)。高冠羚羊(Gazella dorcadoides类型)取食约20%的C_4植物,而中冠羚羊(***类型)与低冠羚羊(***类型)为纯C_3植物消费者。鹿科动物单纯取食C_3植物,而三趾马与***类型的羚羊取食C_4植物的比例在统计上难以区分。碳同位素数据与***- ryi类型的食叶性以及***类型以草食为主的观点相一致。参照这些类群的地理分布,当前的数据支持晚中新世黄土高原东南部处于相对于西北部更为封闭环境的观点。这种环境梯度的分布方向与模式可能是该地区东亚季风体系的早期信号。

Analyses of stable isotopes(C,O,H)in tree rings are increasingly important cross-disciplinary *** rapid development in this field documented in an increasing number of publications requires a comprehensive *** study includes a bibliometric analysis-based review to better understand research trends in tree ring stable isotope ***,1475 publications were selected from the Web of Science Core Collection for *** findings are that:(1)numbers of annual publications and citations increased since *** 1974 to 1980,there were around two relevant publications per ***,from 2020 to 2022,this rose sharply to 109 publications per ***,average article citations were less than four per year before 1990,but were around four per article per year after 2000;(2)the major subjects using tree ring stable isotopes include forestry,geosciences,and environmental sciences,contributing to 42.5%of the total during 1974-2023;(3)the top three most productive institutions are the Chinese Academy of Sciences(423),the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest,Snow and Landscape Research(227),and the University of Arizona(204).these achievements result from strong collaborations;(4)review papers,for example,(Dawson et al.,Annu Rev Ecol Syst 33:507-559,2002)and(McCarroll and Loader,Quat Sci Rev 23:771-801,2004),are among the most cited,with more than 1000 citations;(5)tree ring stable isotope studies mainly focus on climatology and ecology,with atmospheric CO_(2) one of the most popular *** 2010,precipitation and drought have received increasing *** on this analysis,the research stages,key findings,debated issues,limitations and direc-tions for future research are *** study serves as an important attempt to understand the progress on the use of stable isotopes in tree rings,providing scientific guid-ance for young researchers in this field.

Surface plasmon resonance(SPR)sensors are among the most sensitive *** such devices,a grating is a compelling alternative to a prism for the excitation of a surface plasmon,especially in the development of sensors for point-of-care applications due to their compactness and ***,we demonstrate the use of a tunable laser in a grating-based SPR system for further miniaturization and *** tunable laser working at normal incidence replaces spectral and moving components,while also simplifying the optical *** incidence is conventionally avoided due to the complexity of the control of degenerated SPR *** investigate,both computationally and experimentally,the splitting of the SPR modes at small nonzero incidences,which is lacking in previously reported *** optimizing the grating configuration,we were able to diminish the SPR mode splitting phenomenon when the excitation was feasible with the normal incidence *** fabricated sensor showed a high sensitivity of 1101.6 nm/***,the figure of merit of the sensor,defined as the ratio between the sensitivity and bandwidth of the SPR dip,was *** experimental results were consistent with the simulation *** also demonstrate its capability for detecting low concentrations of glucose and creatinine with the limit of detection of 14.2 and 19.1 mmol/L,respectively.

Drug-coated balloon-only strategy for percutaneous coronary intervention of de novo left main coronary artery disease: the importance of proper lesion preparation

this retrospective single-center registry study included all consecutive patients who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for a de novo left main coronary artery lesion using drug coated-balloon (DCB)-only strategy between August 2011 and December 2018. to best of our knowledge, no previous studies of DCB-only strategy of treating de novo left main coronary artery disease, exist. the primary endpoint was major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) including cardiac death, non-fatal myocardial infarction, and target lesion revascularization (tLR). the cohort was divided into two groups depending on weather the lesion preparation was done according to the international consensus group guidelines. Sixty-six patients (mean age 75±8.6, 72% male), 52% of whom had acute coronary syndrome, underwent left main PCI with the DCB-only strategy. No procedural mortality and no acute closures of the treated left main occurred. At 12 months, MACE and tLR occurred in 24% and 6% of the whole cohort, respectively. If the lesion preparation was done according to the guidelines, the MACE and tLR rates were 21.2% and 1.9%. Left main PCI with the DCB only-strategy is safe leading to acceptable MACE and low tLR rates at one year, if the lesion preparation is done according to the guidelines.

Sexual deception： Coevolution or inescapable exploitation？

Sexual deception involves the mimicry of another species’ sexual signals in order to exploit behavioural routines linked to those signals. Known sexually deceptive systems use visual, acoustic or olfactory mimicry to exploit insects for prédation, cleptoparasitism and pollination. It is predicted that where sexual deception inflicts a cost on the receiver, a coevolutìonary arms race could result in the evolution of discriminating receivers and increasingly refined mimicry. We constructed a conceptual model to understand the importance of trade-offs in the coevolution of sexually deceptive mimic and receiver. Four components examined were: the cost of mimicry, the cost to receiver for being fooled, the density of mimics and the relative magnitude of a mimicry-independent component of fitness. the model predicts that the exploitation of non-discriminating receivers by accurate signal mimicry will evolve as an evolutionary stable strategy under a wide range of the parameter space explored. this is due to the difficulty in minimising the costs of being fooled without incurring the cost of falsely rejecting real mating opportunities. In the model, the evolution of deception is impeded when mimicry imposes substantial costs for both sides of the arms race. Olfactory signals that are potentially cheap to produce are therefore likely to be more vulnerable to exploitation than expensive visual ornaments.

Response of soil bacterial community to biochar application in a boreal pine forest

Boreal forests commonly suff er from nitrogen defi ciency due to low rate of nitrogen *** may promote soil organic matter decomposition and accelerate nitrogen *** this study,Illumina NovaSeq sequencing combined with functional annotation of prokaryotic taxa(FAPROtAX)analysis was used to investigate the eff ect of biochar pyrolysis temperatures,the amount of applied biochar,and the period since the biochar application(2-and 3-year)on soil bacterial *** results show that biochar pyrolysis temperatures(500℃ and 650℃)and the amount of applied biochar(0.5 kg m^(−2)and 1.0 kg m^(−2))did not change soil ***,the interaction of biochar pyrolysis temperature and the amount had signifi cant eff ects on bacterial species richness and evenness(Pthe application of biochar produced at 500℃ had a lower abundance of Actinobacteria and Verrucomicrobia,while that produced at 650℃ had a higher abundance of Conexibacter and *** biochar produced at 650℃ was applied,applying 0.5 kg m^(−2)had a higher abundance of Cyanobacteria,Conexibacter,and Phenylobacterium than that of 1.0 kg m^(−2)(Ptionally,the abundance of the aromatic compound degradation group increased with the extension of application time and increase of pyrolysis *** time since application played an important role in the formation of soil bacterial communities and their functional ***-term studies are necessary to understand the consequence of biochar on bacterial communities in boreal forests.

total Body Irradiation (tBI) patients are often treated at extended distances of several meters, with blocking made from high-Z materials placed close to the patients’ skin. Evaluating the dose under a block (e.g., for implanted medical device shielding purposes) in such a geometry is challenging. We compare the performance of two commonly used dose calculation algorithms, Anisotropic Analytical Algorithm (AAA) and Acuros XB, with Optically Stimulated Lumine- scence (OSLD) and ion chamber measurements in phantoms. the calculations and phantom measurements are also compared with in-vivo OSLD measure- ments. We find that OSLD and ion chamber measurements in phantom are good predictors of in-vivo measurements, while both AAA and Acuros XB sys- tematically overestimate the block transmission. We found Acuros XB to be accurate enough for a rough upper estimate (dose under block overestimated by 7% - 22%), while for AAA the overestimate was more severe (90% - 110%);the reason is that AAA does not account for the increase in pair production cro- ss-section in high-Z materials.
