Numerical Investigation of the Thermal Response to Skin Tissue during Laser Lipolysis

Laser lipolysis can effectively treat obesity and its associated diseases, such as hypertension, fatty liver, and hyperlipidemia. However, currently available invasive laser lipolysis, which transmits laser to a fiber-optic catheter inserted into the subcutaneous tissue for irradiation through an incision, may cause hematomas, infections, and empyrosis. The current study presents a novel, noninvasive approach for laser lipolysis, which directly irradiates the intact skin surface without an incision and preferentially targets adipose tissue at the near-infrared band. High laser energy is necessary to damage adipocytes; however, this may carbonate and burn the dermis. Therefore, the introduction of skin cooling is essential to avoid unwanted hyperthermal injury and improve the threshold of radiant exposure. In the current study, we investigated a novel noninvasive approach assisted with skin cooling by establishing a homogeneous multi-layer skin model. In this method, light propagation in the skin was simulated by using the Monte Carlo method. Skin cooling was employed before laser irradiation to protect the epidermis from thermal damage, which was treated as a boundary condition based on Newton's law. The numerical results showed that the photons were deposited in the adipose layer more than in the other layers. Laser can effectively destroy adipose tissue at an energy density of >200 J/cm^2 at 1210 nm wavelength, whereas at least 300 J/cm^2 is required at 1064 nm to achieve the same effect. In this experiment, at >5 s pulse width, the selectivity of adipose was not obvious. Moreover, the results indicated that 60 ms R134a or R404a spray can effectively reduce the temperature of the epidermis. R404a exhibited a stronger cooling effect than R134a. Cold air cooling at -10 °C for 10 s could effectively decrease the skin temperature, and deeper cooling could be achieved by cold air cooling compared with cryogen spray cooling.

Removal of elemental mercury by KI-impregnated clay

This study described the use of clay impreg- nated by KI in gas phase elemental mercury （Hg°） removal in flue gas. The effects of KI loading, temperature, 02, SO2 and H20 on Hg°removal were investigated using a fixed bed reactor. The Hg° removal efficiency of KI-clay with 3% KI loading could maintain at a high level （approxi- mately 80 %） after 3 h. The KI-clay demonstrated to be a potential adsorbent for Hg° removal when compared with activated carbon based adsorbent. 02 was found to be an important factor in improving the Hg° removal. 02 was demonstrated to assist the transfer of KI to I2 on the surface of KI-clay, which could react with Hg° directly. NO and SO2 could slightly improve Hg° removal, while H20 inhibited it greatly. The results indicated that after adsorption, most of the mercury escaped from the surface again. Some of the mercury may have been oxidized as it left the surface. The results demonstrated that the chemical reaction primarily occurred between KI and mercury on the surface of the KI-clay.

Supramolecular nanoparticles constructed by orthogonal assembly of pillar[5]arene-cyclodextrin dimacrocycle for chemo-photodynamic combination therapy

Chemotherapy combined with photodynamic therapy has emerged as a promising strategy for cancer ***,simultaneously delivering chemotherapeutic drugs and photosensitizers and precisely adjusting the ratio of the two components as needed remains a challengeable ***,novel supramolecular nanoparticles(donated as BODIPY-CPT-NPs)for chemo-photodynamic combination cancer therapy are constructed from a glutathione-responsive camptothecin-based prodrug,BODIPY photosensitizer,and dimacrocyclic host molecule through orthogonal host-guest recognitions and *** this strategy,the ratio of prodrugs and photosensitizers in nanoparticles can be easily and precisely controlled as *** from the strong host-guest interactions and stable self-assembly,the nanoparticles exhibit excellent stability and photobleaching ***,camptothecin can be released from nanoparticles for chemotherapy in the presence of reduction agent and single oxygen can be efficiently generated for PDT with light *** combined effects of the BODIPY-CPT-NPs have been verified in CT26 and HeLa cancer cells.

The 1/N_c Expansion in Hadron Effective Field Theory

We study the Nc scalings of pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon scatterings in hadron effective field *** assuming Witten's counting rules are applied to matrix elements or scattering amplitudes, which use the relativistic normalization for the nucleons, we find that the nucleon axial coupling gAis of order N_c^0, and a consistent large Nc counting can be established for the pion-nucleon and nucleon-nucleon scatterings. We also justify the nonperturbative treatment of the low energy nucleon-nucleon interaction with the large N_c analysis and find that the deuteron binding energy is of order 1/N_c.

Study on propellant management device in plate surface tension tanks

Surface tension tanks exploit the liquid surface tension in liquid transport and gas–liquid separation to provide gas-free propellant for the thruster. High transport efficiency of deflectors can ensure liquid relocation in the microgravity environment within a short period of time, which is helpful for providing gas-free propellant. This paper explores transport efficiency of deflectors through drop tower experiments and numerical simulations with the volume of fluid method. The experimental and numerical results show that both the liquid flow speed and the mass flow rate along deflectors increase as the widths of deflectors increase. Besides, a new type of propellant management device, which consists of four deflectors and four anti-sloshing baffles, is verified with numerical simulations and drop tower experiments. Moreover, long-term conditions are predicted by using similarity theories. These results can provide important references for the design of plate tanks.
