We report an extremely rare case of adult intussusception caused by anisakiasis. A 41-year-old man was admitted into our hospital for right lower abdominal colicky pain. Ultrasonography and computed tomography revealed the presence of intussusception. As pneumodynamic resolution by colonoscopy failed, surgery was performed. The anisakis body was found in the submucosal layer of the resection specimen. The patient was discharged 9 d after the operation. Anisakiasis may cause intussusception in any country where sushi or sashimi now exists as a popular food. If suspicious, detailed clinical interview as to food intake prior to symptom development is crucial.

Study on Contra-Rotating Small-Sized Axial Flow Hydro Turbine

It is thought that small hydropower generation is alternative energy, and the energy potential of small hydropower is large. The efficiency of small hydro turbines is lower than that of large one, and these small hydro turbine’s common problems are out of operation by foreign materials. Then, there are demands for small hydro turbines to keep high per- formance and wide flow passage. Therefore, we adopted contra-rotating rotors which can be expected to achieve high performance and low-solidity rotors with wide flow passage in order to accomplish high performance and stable opera- tion. Final goal on this study is development of an electric appliance type small hydro turbine which has high portability and makes an effective use of the unused small hydro power energy source. In the present paper, the performance and the internal flow conditions in detail of contra-rotating small-sized axial flow hydro turbine are shown as a first step of the research with the numerical flow analysis. Then, a capability adopting contra-rotating rotors to an electric appliance type small hydro turbine was discussed. Furthermore, the high performance design for it was considered by the numeri- cal analysis results.

The effect of edaravone to leukocyte rolling and adhesion molecule expression in microvessels

Background: Recently, it has become apparent that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a critical role in the initiation of atherosclerosis. In this study, the effect of radical scavenger edaravone to the leukocyte rolling and to the expression of adhesion molecules on microvascular endothelium was investigated. Methods: DSS induced rat colitis model was used as an inflammation model. Edaravone (10.5 mg/kg, Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation, Japan) was used to examine the action of ROS. Images of leukocyte rolling in mesenteric microvessels were investigated in a fluorescence bio-imaging model. Each cross section from the target blood vessel (aotic root, aorta, superior mesenteric artery) were examined by immune-peroxidase staining with anti-P-selectin, E-selectin, ICAM-1 antibody using the streptavidin/biotinylated horseradish peroxidase method. Results: 1) Leukocyte rolling in mesenteric microvessels was significantly increased in colitis. The number of rolling leukocyte was significantly decreased in edaravone group than placebo group (501.3 ± 39.2 vs 252.2 ± 37.2 count/100 μm/10 min). 2) The expression of P-selectin in endothelial cell was significantly increased in colitis. However, this expression was decreased in edaravone group. 3) The expression of E-selectin was not induced to intact aortic root and aorta. In the superior mesenteric artery, the expression was induced by inflammation, and it was attenuated by edaravone. 4) There was little expression of ICAM-1 in both intact aortic root and aortas. While, in the superior mesenteric artery, the expression was confirmed only in placebo group in colitis, and it was attenuated in edaravone group. Conclusions: It was suggested that administration of edaravone led to improving a haemostasis of microcirculation based on down-regulation of adhesion molecules. These results support the evidence that ROS plays a critical role in micro- vascular dysfunction.

TTF-1 is useful for primary site determination in duodenal metastasis

We report here on a case of duodenal metastasis from primary lung adenocarcinoma. A 69-year old man was diagnosed with primary lung adenocarcinoma. Four courses of combined chemotherapy with carboplatin and paclitaxel associated with irradiation of 60 Gy shrunk the lung tumor. However, soon after,the para-aortic lymph node became swollen. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed three duodenal tumors. Differential diagnosis between malignant lymphoma and metastatic duodenal cancer was endoscopically difficult. The histology of biopsied specimens was poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed a positive reaction for thyroid transcription factor-1 (TTF-1). Thus, we concluded that these were metastatic duodenal tumors from lung adenocarcinoma. Two courses of gemcitabine led to a complete remission in this duodenal metastasisand para-aortic lymph node swelling with only scarring remaining in computed tomography. He is now on the continuous generalized chemotherapy. In conclusion, duodenal metastasis from primary lung adenocarcinoma is rare and hard to diagnose. In such an instance, TTF-1 immunostaining is crucial to obtain the correct diagnosis.

Nonlinear optical activities,especially second harmonic generation(SHG),are key phenomena in inversion-symmetrybroken two-dimensional(2D)transition metal dichalcogenides(TMDCs).On the other hand,anisotropic nonlinear optical processes are important for unique applications in nano-nonlinear photonic devices with polarization functions,having become one of focused research topics in the field of nonlinear ***,the strong nonlinearity and strong optical anisotropy do not exist simultaneously in common 2D ***,we demonstrate strong secondorder and third-order susceptibilities of 64 pm/V and 6.2×10^(-19)m^(2)/V^(2),respectively,in the even-layer PdPSe,which has not been discovered in other common TMDCs(e.g.,MoS2).Strikingly,it also simultaneously exhibited strong SHG anisotropy with an anisotropic ratio of~45,which is the largest reported among all 2D materials to date,to the best of our *** addition,the SHG anisotropy ratio can be harnessed from 0.12 to 45(375 times)by varying the excitation wavelength due to the dispersion ofχ^(2)*** an illustrative example,we further demonstrate polarized SHG imaging for potential applications in crystal orientation identification and polarization-dependent spatial *** findings in 2D PdPSe are promising for nonlinear nanophotonic and optoelectronic applications.

Experimental antithrombotic effect of potatoes harvested in the autumn

Prevention of arterial thrombotic diseases has a high priority in developed countries. While an inappropriate diet is known to enhance the risk for acute thrombotic events, a regular diet with proven antithrombotic effects might be beneficial in the prevention of such diseases. The present study is part of a series of investigations aimed to assess the possible antithrombotic activity of various fruits and vegetables. Previously we demonstrated antithrombotic effect of specific potato varieties harvested in the spring. The present study aimed to test seven varieties of potatoes, which were harvested in the autumn. The in vitro Global Thrombosis Test (GTT) was used for selection, which was then followed by the He-Ne laser-induced in vivo thrombosis test in mice treated with potato filtrates orally. We have shown that all seven potato varieties showed some antithrombotic effect and the heat-resistant effect of four varieties was highly significant. Our present findings add further components to a diet containing fruits and vegetables with antithrombotic effect.

Hepatocellular carcinoma, with portal thrombus after viral eradication, disappeared by 5-fluorouracil and interferon

Hepatocarcinogenesis after a sustained virological response (SVR) in type C chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis is an important issue in endemic areas; hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) with portal vein tumor thrombus (PVTT) therapy is especially very hard. We herein report a first case in which combination therapy with interferon-α and continuous intra-arterial infusion of 5-fluorouracil (designated as FAIT) provided a complete response in HCC with PVTT after SVR. Therefore, we think that FAIT is a good option to treat HCC with or without PVTT, even after SVR.
