The nanoscale confinement is of great important for the industrial applications of molecular sieve,desalination,and also essential in bio-logical transport systems.Massive efforts have been devoted to the influence of restricted spaces on the properties of confined fluids.However,the situation of channel-wall is crucial but attracts less attention and remains unknown.To fundamentally understand the mechanism of channel-walls in nanoconfinement,we investigated the interaction between the counter-force of the liquid and interlamellar spacing of nanochannel walls by considering the effect of both spatial confinement and surface wettability.The results reveal that the nanochannel stables at only a few discrete spacing states when its confinement is within 1.4 nm.The quantized interlayer spacing is attributed to water molecules becoming laminated structures,and the stable states are corresponding to the monolayer,bilayer and trilayer water configurations,respectively.The results can potentially help to understand the characterized interlayers spacing of graphene oxide membrane in water.Our findings are hold great promise in design of ion filtration membrane and artificial water/ion channels.

Applying heteroatom co-doped carbon nanotube for manifesting high performance in the electrochemical reduction of aqueous nitrogen oxide by gold nanoparticles

Electrochemical NO-to-NH_(3) under ambient conditions could be a viable alternative having advantages in terms of energy consumption and exhaust gas recycling of NO,replacing a traditional ammonia synthesis method of the Haber–Bosch process.In synthesizing boron(B-)and nitrogen(N-)co-doped carbon nanotube(CNT)based gold(Au)catalysts,B-dopants elevate the conductivity of carbon nanotube by sp2 hybridization on graphene and implant B–N domains within the graphene layer,and result in facilitating the embedding amount of Au accompanied by high dispersibility with low particle size.Theoretical density functional theory(DFT)calculations elucidate that the electron cloud transmitted from B-dopant to the active site of Au induces the Lewis acidic site,and the O-distal pathway occurs following a spontaneous reaction.Increment of the electron-deficient B-doping area accompanied by N-defects and B–O edges retains the major valence state of Au as Au^(δ+),and suppresses hydrogen evolution reaction(HER)by repulsing the hindrance of H*.This record exhibits the highest faradaic efficiency(FE)of 94.7%,and NH_(3) yield rate of 1877.4μg·h^(-1)·mg_(cat)^(-1),which is the optimal yield over energy consumption in the field of the ambient reduction of aqueous NO.

In recent years,due to the increasing demand for portable electronic devices,rechargeable solid-state battery technology has developed rapidly.Lithium-ion batteries are the systems of choice,offering high energy density,flexible and lightweight design,and longer lifespan than comparable battery technologies.Therefore,a better understanding of the relationship between electrochemical mechanism and structural properties from theory and experiment will enable us to accelerate the development of high-performance and security batteries.This review discusses the interplay between theoretical calculation and experiment in the study of lithium ion battery materials.We introduce the application of theoretical calculation method in solid-state batteries through the combination of theory and experiment.We present the concept and assembly technology of solid-state batteries are reviewed.The basic parameters of solid-state electrolytes,especially sulfide-based solid-state electrolytes and their interface mechanisms with high-voltage cathode materials,are analyzed by theoretical methods.We present an overview on the scientific challenges,fundamental mechanisms,and design strategies for solid-state batteries,especially focusing on the issues of stability on solid-state electrolytes and the associated interfaces with both cathode and electrolyte.Owing to the theoretical models,we can not only reveal the unprecedented mechanism from the atomic scale,but also analyze the interface problems in the battery thoroughly,thus effectively designing more promising electrolyte and interface coating materials.It blazed a new trial for engineering an interphase with improved interfacial compatibility for a long-term cyclability.

Prominent removal of trace lead(Ⅱ)ions from polluted water by terephthalic acid reformed Al/Zn metal organic nanoflakes

Terephthalic acid reformed Al/Zn metal organic nanoflake was prepared and functionalized with trie-thylamine(T-AlZn).Without adding terephthalic acid,there was no product of metal organic nanoflake.T-AlZn has a remarkable performance in removing trace lead(Ⅱ)ions(Pb^(2+)).The adsorption equipoise with the removal rate≥97%was reached within 35 min.The removal rates of T-AlZn for Pb^(2+)declined by only 16.73%after four regenerations.The adsorption of T-AlZn for Pb^(2+)follows the Langmuir isotherms model and pseudo-second-order dynamics model.The utmost adsorption competence was calculated as 215.27 mg g^(-1).The T-AlZn adsorbent exhibits a bright prospect in the adsorption for Pb^(2+)and is a considerable candidate in the disposal of industrial sewage.

Long-term functional maintenance of primary hepatocytes in vitro using macroporous hydrogels engineered through liquid-liquid phase separation

Preserving the functionality of hepatocytes in vitro poses a significant challenge in liver tissue engineering and bioartificial liver,as these cells rapidly lose their metabolic and functional characteristics after isolation.Inspired by the macroporous structures found in native liver tissues,here we develop synthetic hydrogel scaffolds that closely mimic the liver’s structural organization through the phase separation between polyethylene glycol(PEG)and polysaccharides.Our hydrogels exhibit interconnected macroporous structures and appropriate mechanical properties,providing an optimal microenvironment conducive to hepatocyte adhesion and the formation of sizable aggregates.Compared to two-dimensional hepatocyte cultures,enhanced functionalities of hepatocytes cultured in our macroporous hydrogels were observed for 14 days,as evidenced by quantitative reverse-transcription–polymerase chain reactions(qRT-PCR),immunofluorescence,and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay(ELISA)analyses.Protein sequencing data further confirmed the establishment of cell–cell interactions among hepatocytes when cultured in our hydrogels.Notably,these hepatocytes maintained a protein expression lineage that closely resembled freshly isolated hepatocytes,particularly in the Notch and tumor necrosis factor(TNF)signaling pathways.These results suggest that the macroporous hydrogels are attractive scaffolds for liver tissue engineering.

Exploring centimeter-sized crystals of bismuth-iodide perovskite toward highly sensitive X-ray detection

Lead-halide perovskites exhibit outstanding performance in X-ray detection due to their intrinsic features such as high charge carrier mobility,large atomic number,and long carrier lifetime,but the toxicity of lead is regarded as the major factor hindering their development.Here,we introduce organic molecule(R)-(-)-2-methylpiperazine(R-MPz)into the bismuth-based structure to synthesize lead-free(R)-(H_(2)MPz)BiI_(5)(R-MBI).The high-quality centimeter-sized single crystals have been obtained,which show a low dark current and superior environmental stability.Particularly,the single-crystal device of R-MBI exhibits a highμτproduct up to 1.88×10^(-4)cm^(2)/V and a low trap density of 1.21×10^(10)cm^(-3).Further,the detector displays excellent detection sensitivity of 263.58μC Gy_(air)^(-1)cm^(-2)and a favorable low detection limit of 4.35μGyair/s,both of which meet the requirement for medical diagnostics.These findings shed light on the exploration of innovative bismuth-based hybrid perovskites for high-performance X-ray detection.

With the increasing demand for terahertz(THz)technology in security inspection,medical imaging,and flexible electronics,there is a significant need for stretchable and transparent THz electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding materials.Existing EMI shielding materials,like opaque metals and carbon-based films,face challenges in achieving both high transparency and high shielding efficiency(SE).Here,a wrinkled structure strategy was proposed to construct ultra-thin,stretchable,and transparent terahertz shielding MXene films,which possesses both isotropous wrinkles(height about 50 nm)and periodic wrinkles(height about 500 nm).Compared to flat film,the wrinkled MXene film(8 nm)demonstrates a remarkable 36.5%increase in SE within the THz band.The wrinkled MXene film exhibits an EMI SE of 21.1 dB at the thickness of 100 nm,and an average EMI SE/t of 700 dBμm^(−1)over the 0.1-10 THz.Theoretical calculations suggest that the wrinkled structure enhances the film’s conductivity and surface plasmon resonances,resulting in an improved THz wave absorption.Additionally,the wrinkled structure enhances the MXene films’stretchability and stability.After bending and stretching(at 30%strain)cycles,the average THz transmittance of the wrinkled film is only 0.5%and 2.4%,respectively.The outstanding performances of the wrinkled MXene film make it a promising THz electromagnetic shielding materials for future smart windows and wearable electronics.

Trophic niche and adaptation in highland lizards:sex has greater influences than species matching

The plateau environments are typically arid,cool,and high altitude,posing formidable challenges to wildlife survival due to resource scarcity and harsh conditions.Unraveling ecological adaptability in severe conditions requires a deeper understanding of the niche characteristics of plateau species.Trophic niche,which is a comprehensive indicator describing the energy acquisition strategy of animals,remains relatively understudied in plateau species.Here,by combining stable isotopes and morphological data,we quantified the trophic niches of two allopatric lizard species(Phrynocephalus vlangalii and P.erythrurus)that live in the hinterland of the Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau,and explored how their trophic niches correlate with morphological and environmental factors.While both trophic niche and morphological traits were similar between species,noteworthy distinctions were observed between male and female Phrynocephalus lizards.The morphological traits associated with predation(i.***.limb length and head size)and reproduction(i.***.abdomen length),annual mean temperature,and sex played influential roles in shifting trophic niches.These results imply that sexual dimorphism may facilitate inter-sex divergence in resource utilization,leading to trophic niche variations in the highland lizards.Furthermore,extreme environmental stress can constrain interspecific divergence in morphological and trophic traits.Our findings illustrate the dynamic variations of trophic niches in highland lizards,contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of the adaptation strategies employed by lizard species in plateau environments.

TBM performance prediction using LSTM-based hybrid neural network model:Case study of Baimang River tunnel project in Shenzhen,China

Accurately predicting tunnel boring machine(TBM)performance is beneficial for excavation efficiency enhancement and risk miti-gation of TBM tunneling.In this paper,we develop a long short-term memory(LSTM)based hybrid intelligent model to predict two key TBM performance parameters(advance rate and cutterhead torque).The model combines the LSTM,BN,Dropout and Dense layers to process the raw data and improve the fitting quality.The features,including the ground formation properties,tunnel route cur-vature,tunnel location and TBM operational parameters,are divided into historical/real-time time-varying parameters,time-invariant parameters and historical/real-time output prediction data.The effectiveness of the proposed model is verified based on a large moni-toring database of the Baimang River Tunnel Project in Shenzhen,south China.We then discuss the influence of the prediction mode,neural network structure and time division interval length of historical data on the prediction accuracy.The significance evaluation of input features shows that the historical output prediction has the largest influence on the prediction accuracy,and the influence of ground properties is secondary.It is also found that the correlations between input features and the output prediction are coincident with their interrelationships with the ground properties and ease of TBM excavation.Finally,it is found that the prediction results are most affected by the total propulsion force followed by the rotation speed of the cutterhead.The established model can provide useful guidance for construction personnel to roughly grasp the possible TBM status from the prediction results when adjusting the operational parameters.

Resurvey After 20 Years:Updating the Distribution,Population,and Potential Threats of the Chinting Alpine Toad

Considering the increased anthropogenic impacts,species with a limited range and low detectability often lack fundamental information and conservation actions,placing them at a high risk of endangerment.The Chinting alpine toad Scutiger chintingensis is a rare mountain amphibian endemic to the eastern margin of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau in China.Within its whole distribution range,only three known populations(Wolong,Emei,and Wawu)exist and no recent population status report has been documented for this species over the past two decades.From 2020 to 2023,we investigated the species distribution,and assessed the risk factors for the main populations.We recorded this species in all distribution areas,and updated a new distribution site with a lower elevation limit.The relative population density was 0.024±0.012 ind./m^(2)on Mount Emei,whereas only 0.008±0.017 ind./m^(2)on Mount Wawu.No significant difference was observed in the number of individuals between the two populations;however,the relative population density was significantly different.Sewage and waste discharge resulting from the construction of scenic areas,as well as disturbances from tourism,were the primary anthropogenic factors that influenced the survival of this species.Our results provide the updated information on the distribution and population status of the Chinting alpine toad,and suggest that unrecorded populations,as well as a wider elevation range,may exist for this species.Our findings emphasise the importance of timely updates of species distribution and population information and offer a basis for the future conservation of endangered amphibians.
