Aerobic glycolysis, i.e., the Warburg effect, may contribute to the aggressive phenotype of hepatocellular carcinoma. However, increasing evidence highlights the limitations of the Warburg effect, such as high mitochondrial respiration and low glycolysis rates in cancer cells. To explain such contradictory phenomena with regard to the Warburg effect, a metabolic interplay between glycolytic and oxidative cells was proposed, i.e., the "reverse Warburg effect". Aerobic glycolysis may also occur in the stromal compartment that surrounds the tumor; thus, the stromal cells feed the cancer cells with lactate and this interaction prevents the creation of an acidic condition in the tumor microenvironment. This concept provides great heterogeneity in tumors, which makes the disease difficult to cure using a single agent. Understanding metabolic flexibility by lactate shuttles offers new perspectives to develop treatments that target the hypoxic tumor microenvironment and overcome the limitations of glycolytic inhibitors.

BACKGROUND Atrophic gastritis is characterized by loss of appropriate glands and reduction in gastric secretory function due to chronic inflammatory processes in gastric mucosa. Moreover, atrophic gastritis is considered as a precancerous condition of gastric cancer. However, little is known about the molecular mechanism underlying gastric mucosal atrophy and its contribution to gastric ***, we hypothesized that transcription factor NKX6.3 might be involved in maintaining gastric epithelial homeostasis by regulating amyloid β(Aβ)*** To determine whether NKX6.3 might protect against gastric mucosal atrophy by regulating Aβ *** We identified NKX6.3 depletion induced cell death by cell count and Western blot assay. Production and mechanism of Aβ oligomer were analyzed by enzymelinked immunosorbent assay, Western blot, immunoprecipitation, real-timequantitative polymerase chain reaction and immunofluorescence analysis. We further validated the correlation between expression of NKX6.3, Helicobacter pylori CagA, Aβ oligomer, apolipoprotein E(ApoE), and β-secretase 1(Bace1) in 55 gastric *** NKX6.3 depletion increased both adherent and floating cell populations in HFE-145 cells. Expression levels of cleaved caspase-3,-9, and poly ADP ribose polymerase were elevated in floating HFE-145^(shNKX6.3) cells. NKX6.3 depletion produced Aβ peptide oligomers, and increased expression of ApoE, amyloid precursor protein, Aβ, Bace1, low-density lipoprotein receptor, nicastrin, high mobility group box1, and receptor for advanced glycosylation end product proteins. In immunoprecipitation assay, γ-secretase complex was stably formed only in HFE-145^(shNKX6.3) cells. In gastric mucosae with atrophy, expression of Aβpeptide oligomer, ApoE, and Bace1 was detected and inversely correlated with NKX6.3 expression. AIM To examine the association between the timing of endo-scopy and the short-term outcomes of acute variceal bleeding in cirrhotic *** This retrospective study included 274 consecutive patients admitted with acute esophageal variceal bleeding of two tertiary hospitals in Korea. We adjusted confounding factors using the Cox proportional hazards model and the inverse probability weighting （IPW） method. The primary outcome was the mortality of patients within 6 *** A total of 173 patients received urgent endoscopy （ i.e. , ≤ 12 h after admission）, and 101 patients received non-urgent endoscopy （〉 12 h after admission）. The 6-wk mortality rate was 22.5% in the urgent endoscopy group and 29.7% in the non-urgent endoscopy group, and there was no significant difference between the two groups before （P = 0.266） and after IPW （P = 0.639）. The length of hospital stay was statistically different between the urgent group and non-urgent group （P = 0.033）; however, there was no significant difference in the in-hospital mortality rate between the two groups （8.1%vs 7.9%, P = 0.960）. In multivariate analyses, timing of endoscopy was not associated with 6-wk mortality （hazard ratio, 1.297; 95% confdence interval, 0.806-2.089; P = 0.284）.CONCLUSION In cirrhotic patients with acute variceal bleeding, the timing of endoscopy may be independent of short-term mortality.

AIM: To investigate the relationship between gallstone disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) in a large Asian population. METHODS: A cross-sectional study including 17612 subjects recruited from general health check-ups at the Seoul National University Hospital, Healthcare System Gangnam Center between January 2010 and December 2010 was conducted. NAFLD and gallstone disease were diagnosed based on typical ultrasonographic findings. Subjects who were positive for hepatitis B or C, or who had a history of heavy alcohol consumption(> 30 g/d for men and > 20 g/d for women) or another type of hepatitis were excluded. Gallstone disease was defined as either the presence of gallstones or previous cholecystectomy, and these two entities(gallstones and cholecystectomy) were analyzed separately. Clinical parameters including body mass index, waist circumference, hypertension, diabetes, smoking status, and regular physical activity were reviewed. Laboratory parameters, including serum levels of gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, fasting glucose, fasting insulin, total cholesterol, triglycerides, and high-density lipoprotein, were also ***: The mean age of the subjects was 48.5± 11.3 years, and 49.3% were male. Approximately 30.3% and 6.1% of the subjects had NAFLD and gallstone disease, respectively. The prevalence of gallstone disease(8.3% vs 5.1%, P < 0.001), including both the presence of gallstones(5.5% vs 3.4%, P < 0.001) and a history of cholecystectomy(2.8% vs 1.7%, P < 0.001), was significantly increased in the NAFLD group. In the same manner, the prevalence of NAFLD increased with the presence of gallstone disease(41.3% vs 29.6%, P < 0.001). Multivariate regression analysis showed that cholecystectomy was associated with NAFLD(OR = 1.35, 95%CI: 1.03-1.77, P = 0.028). All-solid-state batteries(ASSBs)are pursued due to their potential for better safety and high energy ***,the energy density of the cathode for ASSBs does not seem to be satisfactory due to the low utilization of active materials(AMs)at high *** small amount of solid electrolyte(SE)powder in the cathode,poor electrochemical performance is often observed due to contact loss and non-homogeneous distribution of AMs and SEs,leading to high tortuosity and limitation of lithium and electron transport ***,we propose a novel cathode design that can achieve high volumetric energy density of 1258 Wh L^(-1)at high AM content of 85 wt%by synergizing the merits of AM@SE core–shell composite particles with conformally coated thin SE shell prepared from mechanofusion process and small SE *** core–shell structure with an intimate and thin SE shell guarantees high ionic conduction pathway while unharming the electronic *** addition,small SE particles play the role of a filler that reduces the packing porosity in the cathode composite electrode as well as between the cathode and the SE separator *** systematic demonstration of the optimization process may provide understanding and guidance on the design of electrodes for ASSBs with high electrode density,capacity,and ultimately energy density.
