Differential diagnoses of magnetic resonance imaging for suspected acute appendicitis in pregnant patients

BACKGROuND: Accurate and timely diagnosis of acute surgical disease in pregnant patient is chal enging. Although magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) is the most accurate modality to diagnose acute appendicitis in pregnant patients, it is often used as a last resort because of high cost and long scan time. We performed this study to analyze differential diagnoses of appendix MRI and to investigate if there are any blood tests that can predict surgical condition in pregnant ***: A retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on 46 pregnant patients who underwent non-enhanced appendix MRI in suspicion of acute appendicitis from 2010 to 2016. Differential diagnoses of appendix MRI were analyzed and blood tests were compared between those who had surgical and non-surgical ***: Appendix MRI differentiated two surgical disease; acute appendicitis and ovarian torsion; and various non-surgical conditions such as uterine myoma, hydronephrosis, ureterolithiasis and diverticulitis among clinically suspected acute appendicitis in pregnancy. The diagnostic accuracy of MRI for acute appendicitis in this study was 93.5%. Patients who had surgical disease showed significantly higher WBC count(≥11,000/mm^3), proportion of neutrophils in the WBC(≥79.9%), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR≥6.4), levels of C-reactive protein(CRP≥1.82 mg/dL) and bilirubin(≥0.66 mg/dL) than those who had non-surgical ***: MRI can reliably differentiate surgical conditions and several blood tests(WBC, proportion of neutrophils in the WBC, NLR, CRP, bilirubin) can help anticipate acute surgical condition among pregnant patients suspected to have acute appendicitis.

BACKGROuND A recent retrospective study confirmed that hepatic stiffness and splenic stiffness measured with magnetic resonance elastography(MRE) are strongly associated with the presence of esophageal varices. Patients who had undergone Kasai operations for biliary atresia were selected for the Kasai group, and patients with normal livers and spleens were selected for the control group. Despite the excellent merits of lead perovskite solar cells, their instability and toxicity still present a bottleneck for practical applications. Bismuth perovskite has emerged as a candidate for photovoltaic (PV) applications, because it not only has a low toxicity but is also stable in air. However, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) remains an unsolved problem. We performed band gap tuning experiments to improve the efficiency. The absorption of ABi3I10 structure films was extended within the visible region, and the optical band gap was decreased considerably compared to that for Cs3Bi2I9. Furthermore, we explained the correlation between the structure and the optical properties via a first-principles study. A device employing CsBi3I10 as a photoactive layer exhibits a PCE of 1.51% and an excellent ambient stability over 30 days.

Traditional iridium (Ir) oxide catalysts have faced significant limitations in water electrolysis, particularly under acidic conditions where instability and degradation severely restrict the efficiency of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). To overcome these challenges, this study successfully synthesized highly dispersed IrPtPdNi alloy nanoparticles on a graphene oxide support using a vertically moving reactor, demonstrating exceptional performance in water electrolysis. These nanoparticles, synthesized via a fast-moving bed pyrolysis method, combine iridium, platinum, palladium, and nickel. They exhibit lower overpotentials in OER and comparable performance in HER to commercial catalysts, while also offering enhanced stability. These results surpass the limitations of traditional catalysts, marking significant progress toward more efficient and sustainable hydrogen production technologies. This advancement is expected to contribute significantly to the development of sustainable energy systems by innovatively enhancing the performance of catalysts in the electrochemical water-splitting process.
