Sorption by soil organic matter(SOM)is considered the most important process affecting the bioavailability of hydrophobic organic chemicals(HOCs)in soil.The sorption capacity of SOM for HOCs is affected by many environmental factors.In this study,we investigated the effects of soil pH and water saturation level on HOC sorption capacity of SOM using batch sorption experiments.Values of soil organic carbon-water partition coefficient(K_(OC))of six selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)were measured in an artificial soil under various soil pH and water saturation conditions.Passive sampling was used to measure K_(OC)with polydimethylsiloxane as the sampling material.Regardless of soil pH,K_(OC)increased with increasing soil water saturation level for lower-molecular-weight PAHs.In contrast,K_(OC)decreased with increasing soil water saturation level for higher-molecular-weight PAHs.Despite some fluctuations,K_(OC)tended to decrease with increasing soil pH at all water saturation levels.This indicates that earlier studies on the effects of soil pH on K_(OC)under saturated conditions could be extended to unsaturated soils.These K_(OC)tendencies were reproduced in three different natural soils,suggesting that the effects of soil water saturation level and pH might be generalized,at least for PAHs.The PAH sorption capacity of SOM was found to be resilient under dynamic soil pH conditions,which can be used to adjust the effects of soil pH.

Crop models have been developed for wide research purposes and scales,but they have low compatibility due to the diversity of current modeling studies.Improving model adaptability can lead to model integration.Since deep neural networks have no conventional modeling parameters,diverse input and output combinations are possible depending on model training.Despite these advantages,no process-based crop model has been tested in full deep neural network complexes.The objective of this study was to develop a process-based deep learning model for hydroponic sweet peppers.Attention mechanism and multitask learning were selected to process distinct growth factors from the environment sequence.The algorithms were modified to be suitable for the regression task of growth simulation.Cultivations were conducted twice a year for 2 years in greenhouses.The developed crop model,DeepCrop,recorded the highest modeling efficiency(=0.76)and the lowest normalized mean squared error(=0.18)compared to accessible crop models in the evaluation with unseen data.The t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding distribution and the attention weights supported that DeepCrop could be analyzed in terms of cognitive ability.With the high adaptability of DeepCrop,the developed model can replace the existing crop models as a versatile tool that would reveal entangled agricultural systems with analysis of complicated information.

BACKGROUND Ewing’s sarcoma(ES)is a neuroectodermal tumor that typically occurs in the bones and soft tissues of children and young adults.Primary renal ES is rare;only a few cases and a small case series have been documented,and only four cases involved primary renal ES in older people(>65 years old).CASE SUMMARY Herein,we describe the radiological and pathological features of primary renal ES in an older person.A 76-year-old man complained of poor oral intake and was found to have a large cystic renal mass with indistinct margins on computed tomography.Ultrasound-guided biopsy revealed that the tumor contained small round blue cells.The patient underwent a right radical nephrectomy.The tumor cells showed diffuse membranous CD99,and nuclear friend leukemia integration 1 transcription factor and NK2 Homeobox 2.Fluorescence in situ hybridization revealed EWSR1 translocation.Postoperatively,18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography revealed no evidence of metastasis.The patient was diagnosed with primary renal ES.Six months following the surgery,local recurrence and distant metastasis were observed.Primary renal ES is rare and often lethal in older individuals.The specific imaging findings are unknown,and treatment protocols have not been standardized.CONCLUSION This case report describes the radiological and pathological features of primary renal ES in an older person.

Tetramic acid-containing natural products are attracting significantly increasing attention from biologists and chemists due to their intriguing structures and biological activities.In the present study,two new tetramic acid alkaloids tolypyridone I(1)and tolypyridone J(2),together with five known ones(3–7),were isolated from cultures of a marine fungus Tolypocladium cylindrosporum FB06 isolate obtained from a marine sediment in Beaufort sea of North Alaska.Their structures were elucidated using 1D,2D NMR,and HRESIMS.Their configurations were established on the basis of 1H coupling constants,ROESY correlations and DP4 calculations.Compound 2 was isolated as mixtures of rotational isomers with C-3 to C-7 axis between 4-hydroxy-2-pyridone and 1-ethyl-3,5-dimethylcyclohexane,hindering rotation.In our unbiased screening to discover neuroprotective compounds in an in vitro Parkinson’s disease(PD)model,SH-SY5Y dopaminergic cells were treated with isolated compounds followed by treatment with 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium(MPP^(+)),a parkinsonian neurotoxin.Among tested compounds,F-14329(7)significantly protected cells from MPP^(+)-induced cytotoxicity.MPP^(+)-mediated cell death is known to be related to the regulation of Bcl-2 family proteins,specifically the down-regulation of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2 and the up-regulation of pro-apoptotic Bax levels.Treatment with 2 mmol/L of MPP^(+)for 24 h significantly reduced Bcl-2 levels compared to control treated with vehicle.However,treatment with F-14329(7)attenuated such reduction.This study demonstrates that tetramic acid-motif compounds could be potential lead compounds for treating PD.

Regeneration-associated macrophages： a novel approach to boost intrinsic regenerative capacity for axon regeneration

Axons in central nervous system （CNS） do not regenerate spontaneously after injuries such as stroke and traumatic spinal cord iniury. Both intrinsic and extrinsic factors are responsible for the regeneration fail- ure, Although intensive research efforts have been invested on extrinsic regeneration inhibitors, the extent to which glial inhibitors contribute to the regeneration failure in viva still remains elusive. Recent exper- imental evidence has rekindled interests in intrinsic factors for the regulation of regeneration capacity in adult mammals. In this review, we propose that activating macrophages with pro-regenerative molecular signatures could be a novel approach for boosting intrinsic regenerative capacity of CNS neurons. Using a conditioning injury model in which regeneration of central branches of dorsal root ganglia sensory neu- rons is enhanced by a preceding injury to the peripheral branches, we have demonstrated that perineuronal macrophages surrounding dorsal root ganglia neurons are critically involved in the maintenance of en- hanced regeneration capacity. Neuron-derived chemokine （C-C motif） ligand 2 （CCL2） seems to mediate neuron-macrophage interactions conveying injury signals to perineuronal macrophages taking on a soley pro-regenerative phenotype, which we designate as regeneration-associated macrophages （RAMs）. Ma- nipulation of the CCL2 signaling could boost regeneration potential mimicking the conditioning injury, suggesting that the chemokine-mediated RAM activation could be utilized as a regenerative therapeutic strategy for CNS injuries.

Characterization of particulate matter from diesel passenger cars tested on chassis dynamometers

Emission characterization of particle number as well as particle mass from three diesel passenger cars equipped with diesel particulate filter（DPF）, diesel oxidation catalyst（DOC）and exhaust gas recirculation（EGR） under the vehicle driving cycles and regulatory cycle.Total particle number emissions（PNEs） decreased gradually during speed-up of vehicle from 17.3 to 97.3 km/hr. As the average vehicle speed increases, the size-segregated peak of particle number concentration shifts to smaller size ranges of particles. The correlation analysis with various particulate components such as particle number concentration（PNC）,ultrafine particle number concentration（UFPNC） and particulate matter（PM） mass was conducted to compare gaseous compounds（CO, CO2, HC and NOx）. The UFPNC and PM were not only emitted highly in Seoul during severe traffic jam conditions, but also have good correlation with hydrocarbons and NOxinfluencing high potential on secondary aerosol generation. The effect of the dilution temperature on total PNC under the New European Driving Cycle（NEDC）, was slightly higher than the dilution ratio. In addition, the nuclei mode（DP： ≤ 13 nm） was confirmed to be more sensitive to the dilution temperature rather than other particle size ranges. Comparison with particle composition between vehicle speed cycles and regulatory cycle showed that sulfate was slightly increased at regulatory cycle, while other components were relatively similar. During cold start test, semivolatile nucleation particles were increased due to effect of cold environment. Research on particle formation dependent on dilution conditions of diesel passenger cars under the NEDC is important to verify impact on vehicular traffic and secondary aerosol formation in Seoul.

This study aimed to investigate perceived ejaculatory function/satisfaction before treatment for lower urinary tract symptoms （LUTS）/benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） and to identify associations between specific categories of ejaculatory dysfunctions （EjDs） and LUTS. A total of 1574 treatment-naive men with LUTS/BPH were included in this study. All patients underwent routine evaluation for LUTS/BPH including the International Index of Erectile Function and a 5-item questionnaire developed to assess ejaculatory volume/force/pain/satisfaction/latency time. Patients who had sexual intercourse over the past 4 weeks were classified as sexually active group. A total of 783 patients were categorized as sexually active group. Decreased ejaculatory volume and force were reported by 53.4% and 55.7% of 783 sexually active men, respectively, There was a strong correlation between ejaculatory volume and force. Ejaculatory pain/discomfort, premature ejaculation （PE）, and delayed ejaculation （DE） were reported in 41,0%, 16.3%, and 41.4% of the patients, respectively. Over 40.0% of men without decreased ejaculation volume/force were satisfied with ejaculatory function, whereas approximately 6.0% of men with decreased volume/force were satisfied with ejaculatory function. About 30.0% of men with decreased volume/force had orgasmic dysfunction, while approximately 10.0% of men without decreased volume/force did. Decreased ejaculatory volume or force was associated with LUTS severity after adjusting for other influential factors including testosterone level, erectile function, and prostate size on ultrasonography, but PE or DE or ejaculatory pain/discomfort was not. In conclusion, a considerable portion of men with LUTS/BPH appear to have a variety of EjDs. Ejaculatory volume/force and satisfaction/orgasm do not always appear to be concordant. Ejaculatory volume or force is independently associated with LUTS severity, whereas PE or DE or ejaculatory pain/discomfort is not.

We aimed to evaluate the current nationwide trend,efficacy,safety,and quality of life(QoL)profiles of hormone treatment in real-world practice settings for prostate cancer(PCa)patients in Korea.A total of 292 men with any biopsy-proven PCa(TanyNanyMany)from 12 institutions in Korea were included in this multi-institutional,observational study of prospectively collected data.All luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone(LHRH)agonists were allowed to be investigational drugs.Efficacy was defined as(1)the rate of castration(serum testosterone≤50 ng dl^-1)at 4-week visit and(2)breakthrough(serum testosterone>50 ng dl^-1 after castration).Safety assessments included routine examinations for potential adverse events,laboratory tests,blood pressure,body weight,and bone min era I density(BMD,at baseli ne and at the last follow-up visit).QoL was assessed using the Expa nded Prostate Cancer Index Composite-26(EPIC-26).The most comm on initial therapeutic regimen was LHRH agonist with an ti-androge n(78.0%),and the most commonly used LHRH agonist for combination and mono therapy was leuprolide(64.0%for combi natio n and 58.0%for monotherapy).The castration and breakthrough rates were 78.4%and 6.6%,respectively.The laboratory results related to dyslipidemia worsened after 4 weeks of hormone treatment.In addition,the mean BMD T-score was significantly lower at the last follow-up(mean:-1.950)compared to baseline(mean:-0.195).The mean total EPIC-26 score decreased from 84.8(standard deviation[s.d.]:12.2)to 78.3(s.d.:8.1),with significant deterioration only in the urinary domain(mean:23.5 at baseli ne and 21.9 at the 4-week visit).These findi ngs dem on strate the n ationwide trend of current practice setti ngs in hormone treatment for PCa in Korea.

Preventing condensation of objective lens in noncontact wide-angle viewing systems during vitrectomy

AIM： To assess the optimal conditions for preventing condensation of objective lens during vitrectomy with noncontact wide-angle viewing systems（WAVSs）. METHODS： We explored the effectiveness of the coating with ophthalmic viscoelastic device（OVDs） on the corneal surface and the soaking the objective lens in warm-saline for preventing condensation of objective lens. First, to find the optimal soaking time to keep the objective lens warm, we measured the temperature of objective lens every minute after soaking in warm saline. Second, to find optimal distance between cornea and objective lens, which provide as wide a view as possible and less condensation at the same time, we measured the condensation time with different distances. With the obtained optimal soaking time and distance, we explored the effect of coating cornea with OVDs and soaking objective lens in warm saline on condensation time.RESULTS： One and 5 min of soaking in warm saline was most effective for keeping the lens warm enough（45.1℃±2.1℃ for 1 min and 46.4℃±1.0℃ for 5 min, P=0.109）. The mean condensation times for the control group at 1, 3, and 5 mm from corneal surface to objective lens were 1±0.4, 4±1.4, 190±26.1 s, respectively, thus 5 mm was most optimal distance for vitrectomy with WAVSs. For the OVD coating group, the mean condensation times were 1.5±0.3, 13±1.4, and 200±23.9 s at 1, 3, and 5 mm distance and borderline significant compared with control group（P=0.068, 0.051, and 0.063, respectively）. With the 1-minute warm saline soaking group, the mean condensation time were extended to 188±34.4, 416±65.7, and 600±121.3 s at 1, 3, and 5 mm distance and statistically significant compared with control（P=0.043, 0.041 and 0.043, respectively）.CONCLUSION： OVD coating on corneal surface shows no difference on condensation time with control group. However, soaking the objective lens in warm saline revealed statistically significant extension of condensation time compared to control group. Objective:The effectiveness of adjuvant treatments for resected gallbladder carcinoma(GBC)has remained unclear due to lack of randomized controlled trials;thus,the aim of present study was to evaluate the role of adjuvant treatments,including chemoradiotherapy(CRT)and/or chemotherapy(CTx),in patients with resected GBC.Methods:A total of 733 GBC patients who received curative-intent surgical resection were identified in a multi-institutional database.Of 733 patients,372(50.8%)did not receive adjuvant treatment,whereas 215(29.3%)and 146(19.9%)received adjuvant CTx and CRT,respectively.The locoregional recurrence-free survival(LRFS),recurrence-free survival(RFS),and overall survival(OS)of the adjuvant treatment groups were compared according to tumor stage(stage II vs.stage III–IV).Results:In stage II disease(n=381),the 5-year LRFS,RFS,and OS were not significantly different among the no-adjuvant therapy,CTx,and CRT groups,and positive resection margin,presence of perineural invasion,and Nx classification were consistently associated with worse LRFS,RFS,and OS in the multivariate analysis(P<0.05).For stage III–IV(n=352),the CRT group had significantly higher 5-year LRFS,RFS,and OS than the no-adjuvant therapy and CTx groups(67.8%,45.2%,and 56.9%;37.9%,28.8%,and 35.4%;and 45.0%,30.0%,and 45.7%,respectively)(P<0.05).Conclusions:CRT has value as adjuvant treatment for resected GBC with stage III–IV disease.Further study is needed for stage II disease with high-risk features.
