Preventing condensation of objective lens in noncontact wide-angle viewing systems during vitrectomy

AIM： To assess the optimal conditions for preventing condensation of objective lens during vitrectomy with noncontact wide-angle viewing systems（WAVSs）. METhoDS： We explored the effectiveness of the coating with ophthalmic viscoelastic device（OVDs） on the corneal surface and the soaking the objective lens in warm-saline for preventing condensation of objective lens. First, to find the optimal soaking time to keep the objective lens warm, we measured the temperature of objective lens every minute after soaking in warm saline. Second, to find optimal distance between cornea and objective lens, which provide as wide a view as possible and less condensation at the same time, we measured the condensation time with different distances. With the obtained optimal soaking time and distance, we explored the effect of coating cornea with OVDs and soaking objective lens in warm saline on condensation ***： One and 5 min of soaking in warm saline was most effective for keeping the lens warm enough（45.1℃±2.1℃ for 1 min and 46.4℃±1.0℃ for 5 min, P=0.109）. The mean condensation times for the control group at 1, 3, and 5 mm from corneal surface to objective lens were 1±0.4, 4±1.4, 190±26.1 s, respectively, thus 5 mm was most optimal distance for vitrectomy with WAVSs. For the OVD coating group, the mean condensation times were 1.5±0.3, 13±1.4, and 200±23.9 s at 1, 3, and 5 mm distance and borderline significant compared with control group（P=0.068, 0.051, and 0.063, respectively）. With the 1-minute warm saline soaking group, the mean condensation time were extended to 188±34.4, 416±65.7, and 600±121.3 s at 1, 3, and 5 mm distance and statistically significant compared with control（P=0.043, 0.041 and 0.043, respectively）.CONCLUSION： OVD coating on corneal surface shows no difference on condensation time with control group. however, soaking the objective lens in warm saline revealed statistically significant extension of condensation time compared to control group. Neuroprotective Effect of Chunghyuldan(Qing Xue Dan)on Hypoxia-Reoxygenation Induced Damage of Neuroblastoma 2a Cell Lines

Objectives： Chunghyuldan （CHD）, a combinatorial drug that has anti-hyperlipidemic and anti inflammatory activities, has been shown to reduce infarct volume in a focal ischemia-reperfusion rat model. To explore the molecular basis of CHD＇s neuroprotective effect, we examined whether CHD shows a cell-protective activity and has a regulatory effect on Bax and/or B-cell leukemia/lymphoma 2 （Bcl-2） expression in mouse neuroblastoma 2a （N2a） cells subjected to hypoxia-reoxygenation （H/R）. Methods： In order to evaluate the effects of CHD on the cytotoxicity induced from hypoxia or H/R condition, lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） assay was performed. To explore whether the suppression of neural damage when pre-treated with CHD is associated with its anti-apoptotic effect, the CHD effect on the expression of Bcl-2 and Bax was analyzed by Western blotting analysis. Results： Cytotoxicity of N2a cell line was slightly increased in 42 h hypoxia condition and dramatically increased under the H/R condition. CHD treatment markedly decreased the cytotoxicity in both conditions （P〈0.01, P〈0.05）. H/R markedly increased the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein, Bax, but slightly increased the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein, Bcl-2, compared with the normoxia or hypoxia group. CHD significantly decreased Bax expression （P〈0.01） and slightly decreased Bcl-2 expression （P〉0.05）, resulted in a reduction of Bax/Bcl-2 ratio in N2a cells subjected to H/R. Conclusion： CHD has neuroprotective effect in N2a cells subjected to H/R, which might be derived at least in part from its ability to decrease the expression of the pro-apoptotic protein, Bax.

C-terminal domain of hepatitis C virus core protein is essential for secretion

AIM: We have previously demonstrated that hepatitis C virus (HCV) core protein is efficiently released into the culture medium in insect cells. The objective of this study is to characterize the HCV core secretion in insect cells. METhoDS: We constructed recombinant baculoviruses expressing various-length of mutant core proteins, expressed these proteins in insect cells, and examined core protein secretion in insect cells. RESULTS: Only wild type core was efficiently released into the culture medium, although the protein expression level of wild type core was lower than those of other mutant core proteins. We found that the shorter form of the core construct expressed the higher level of protein. however, if more than 18 amino acids of the core were truncated at the C-terminus, core proteins were no longer secreted into the culture medium. Membrane flotation data show that the secreted core proteins are associated with the cellular membrane protein, indicating that HCV core is secreted as a membrane complex. CONCLUSION: The C-terminal 18 amino acids of HCV core were crucial for core secretion into the culture media. Since HCV replication occurs on lipid raft membrane structure, these results suggest that HCV may utilize a unique core release mechanism to escape immune surveillance, thereby potentially representing the feature of HCV morphogenesis.

The deep understanding about the electrochemical behavior of the nanostructured electrode in electrolytes provides crucial insights for the rational design of electrode for sodium(Na)-ion storage system(NIS).Here,we report redox charge transfer kinetics and reversibility of VO_(2)(B) nanorod electrodes in both aqueous and organic electrolytes for *** assynthesized VO_(2)(B) nanorods show the reversible redox reaction with the higher specific and rate capacitances at high current density in aqueous electrolytes than in organic ***-dependent impedance measurements demonstrate the more facile interfacial charge transfer of Na ions into VO_(2)(B) nanorods in aqueous *** reversible evolution in oxidation state and chemical composition of VO_(2)(B) nanorods is observed in aqueous electrolytes,as confirmed by ex situ XRD and ex situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy *** by the facile and reversible pseudocapacitive feature,the electrochemical performances of VO_(2)(B) nanorods are further improved by constructing the hierarchical structure of the reduced graphene oxide-VO_(2) composite for aqueous Na+ion storage.

A method for automatically translating print books into electronic Braille books

In this paper, a method for automatically translating scanned images from print books into electronic Braille books is proposed with the objective of reducing the amount of time and cost required for producing Braille books. The proposed method consists of processes for identifying character and image areas in a scanned image, automatically translating characters and images into Braille and tactile graphics, respectively, and positioning Braille and tactile graphics into an electronic Braille page. Experimental results show that the proposed method drastically reduces the time required to translate a print book into an electronic Braille book. Despite the drastic reduction in translation time, the method proposed in this paper does not compromise the ability to recognize information for the visually impaired compared to manually produced Braille books, demonstrating its feasibility in practical applications. Therefore, the proposed method is expected to significantly reduce the time and cost required for producing Braille books, and provide more reading materials for the visually impaired,making significant contributions to enhancing their knowledge and welfare.

A combination strategy of functionalized polymer coating with Ta ion implantation for multifunctional and biodegradable vascular stents

Biodegradable stents made of magnesium(Mg)and its alloys have been developed to minimize persistent inflammation or in-stent restenosis,which are the main problems for permanent ***,their rapid corrosion behavior under physiological conditions leads to poor vascular compatibility and premature structural failure,which remains an important unsolved clinical ***,we demonstrate a new strategy for solving this problem by combining poly(ether imide)(PEI)coating and subsequent tantalum(Ta)ion *** PEI coating covers the whole surface of the Mg stent uniformly via a spray coating technique and provides Mg with superior corrosion resistance and stable sirolimus-carrying *** ion implantation is conducted by a sputtering-based plasma immersion ion implantation technique only onto the luminal surface of the PEI-coated Mg *** extremely short processing time(<30 s)permits preservation of the PEI coating’s corrosion protection ability and sirolimus loading *** addition,a Ta-implanted skin layer that forms on the topmost surface of the PEI coating plays an effective role in not only preventing a rapid release of sirolimus from the surface but also improving the PEI coating’s surface *** on in vitro cellular response and blood compatibility tests,Ta ion implantation leads to the improvement of endothelial cell adhesion/proliferation and suppression of platelet adhesion/activation regardless of sirolimus *** results indicate that the combination of PEI coating and Ta ion implantation has significant innovative potential to provide excellent vascular compatibility and prevent in-stent restenosis and thrombosis.

Concept study of measuring gravitational constant using superconducting gravity gradiometer

Newton＇s gravitational constant G is the least known fundamental constant of nature. Since Cavendish made the first measurement of G with a torsion balance over two hundred years ago, the best results of G have been obtained by using torsion balances. however, the uncorrected anelasticity of torsion fibers makes the results questionable. We present a new method of G measurement by using a superconducting gravity gradiometer constructed with levitated test masses, which is free from the irregularities of mechanical suspension. The superconducting gravity gradiometer is rotated to generate a centrifugal acceleration that nulls the gravity field of the source mass, forming an artificial planetary system. This experiment has a potential accuracy of G better than 10 ppm.

Formation Mechanism of Chunky Graphite and Its Preventive Measures

The formation mechanism of chunky graphite has been reviewed and studied. The study consisted of a unidirectional solidification method, a small droplet method and a furnace cooling method. Four kinds of iron samples were prepared, namely, the pure Fe-C, Fe-C-S, Fe-C-Ce and Fe-C-Si-Ce alloys, and three kinds of nickel samples, namely the Ni-C, Ni-C-S and Ni-C-Mg alloys. The results of the unidirectional solidification of the Ni-C alloys showed that spheroidal graphite is not observed in the continuous solidified region, in which only flake-like graphite is observed, while spheroidal graphite is usually observed in the quenched liquid region. The existence of spheroidal graphite in the solidified phase is recognized only in the discontinuous growth mode of the Ni-C-Mg alloy solidified at 150 mm/h. This means that the spheroidal graphite is directly crystallized from the melt and entrapped by the flake-like chunky graphite that is formed by the continuous growth mode. In the small droplet method, a small piece of the Fe-C or Fe-C-Ce sample was melted on a pure graphite plate then cooled at a different cooling rate in a He-3%H2 atmosphere. The graphite in the Fe-C-Ce alloy is usually spherical. Nevertheless, the graphite morphology of the final solidified area changed from spherical to chunky and chunky to ledeburite with an increase in the cooling rate. This means that the chunky graphite is formed in the residual liquid region by the solidification into Fe-graphite system. The sample was cooled in a furnace, and the graphite morphology changes from spherical to chunky and chunky to ledeburite with the decrease in the Si content. These phenomena can be confirmed by the cooling curves of these samples.
