AIM: To study the trends of major causes of visual impairment(VI) in adults in Sichuan,China and evaluate the effect of aging on the trends. ·MeTHODS: We used data from the National Sample Survey on Disabilities(NSSD) in Sichuan province conducted in 1987 and 2006. The age-adjusted prevalence of major causes of VI and the prevalence stratified by age in each cause were calculated and compared. The association between age and each cause of VI was also analyzed.·ReSULTS: Retinal disease increased and became the second leading cause of VI in 2006 while blinding trachoma decreased markedly. Cataract and non-trachomatous corneal diseases were among the leading causes of VI in both years. We found associations between age and causes of VI,with age showing the strongest association with cataract and relatively lower associations with other causes. · CONCLUSION: In the last two decades,dramatic changes occurred in the major causes of VI with significantly increased retinal disease and decreased blinding trachoma. Aging of the population might be an important factor accounting for the changed trends of VI. Understanding the prevalence of VI,its major causes and trends over time can assist in prioritizing and developing effective interventional strategies and monitoring their impact.

Sergei Winogradsky illuminated revolutionary concepts and produced a tool to visualize complex microbial communities and their metabolisms over time:columns displaying aquatic consortia with variety of *** worked with museums in Utah to create Winogradsky columns that would highlight aesthetic properties of the Great Salt Lake(GSL)ecosystem,which has a salinity gradient from the freshwater wetlands to salt *** column,constructed using haloarchaea-rich hypersaline brine and oolitic sand of the lake’s north arm,was enriched with nutrients,and resulted in the desired pink hue over *** a seven-year maturation period,we examined the microbial taxa present in the water through 16 S/18 S rRNA and Internal Transcribed Spacer(ITS)gene sequencing.A pigment analysis revealed an abundance of bacteriochlorophyll *** presence of this pigment coupled with the DNA sequencing results,suggest that the haloarchaea that dominate the GSL brine,were not responsible for the pink coloration,but instead Gammaproteobacteria,especially Halorhodospira *** the eukaryotes,the lack of phytoplankton and the abundance of fungi were noteworthy *** data likely relate to the reduction of oxygen in a non-aerated sealed system over *** second exhibit had the goal of educating museum goers about the varying salinities of Great Salt *** we employed three distinct columns of water and sediment from this salinity *** of these columns overtime gave us information about invertebrate communities in addition to the microbial *** installations taught us about comparing an artificial environment in a museum setting to the natural *** together,we present the data collected and lessons learned from using Winogradsky columns in public spaces for teaching about an important saline lake.

Overview of single-port laparoscopic surgery for colorectal cancers: Past, present, and the future

Single-port laparoscopic surgery (SPLS) is implemented through a tailored minimal single incision through which a number of laparoscopic instruments access. Introduction of operation-customized port system, utilization of a camera without a separate external light, and instruments with different lengths has brought the favorable environment for SPLS. However, performing SPLS still creates several hardships compared to multiport laparoscopic surgery; a single-port system inevitably leads to clashing of surgical instruments due to crowding. To overcome such difficulties, investigators has developed novel concepts and maneuvers, including the concept of inverse triangulation and the maneuvers of pivoting, spreading out dissection, hanging suture, and transluminal traction. The final destination of SPLS is expected to be a completely seamless operation, maximizing the minimal invasiveness. Specimen extraction through the umbilicus can undermine cosmesis by inducing a larger incision. Therefore, hybrid laparoscopic technique, which combined laparoscopic surgical technique with natural orifice specimen extraction (NOSe) - i.e., transvaginal or transanal route-, has been developed. SPLS and NOSe seemed to be the best combination in pursuit of minimal invasiveness. In the near future, robotic SPLS with natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery’s way of specimen extraction seems to be pursued. It is expected to provide a completely or nearly complete seamless operation regardless of location of the lesion in the abdomen.

Plasmid DNA-loaded asymmetrically porous membrane for guided bone regeneration

Although bone defects can be restored spontaneously,bone reconstruction with sufficient strength and volume continues to be a challenge in clinical *** recent years,the use of a variety of biomaterials with bioactivity has been attempted to compensate for this ***,we fabricated a pDNA(encoding for BMP-2)-loaded asymmetrically porous polycaprolactone(PCL)/Pluronic F127 membrane as a bioactive guided bone regeneration(GBR)membrane,using a modified immersion-precipitation *** was observed that the GBR membrane allows continuous release of pDNA for more than20 *** pDNA was sufficiently transfected into human bone marrow stem cells(h BMSCs)without significant cytotoxicity and the gene-transfected cells showed prolonged synthesis of *** in vitro osteogenic differentiation and in vivo animal studies,the effective induction of osteogenic differentiation of h BMSCs and enhanced bone regeneration by the pDNA-loaded asymmetrically porous PCL/Pluronic F127 membrane was observed,suggesting that the pDNA-loaded membrane as a bioactive GBR membrane can be an alternative therapeutic technique for effective bone regeneration.

By using the wavelet transform (WT), we analysed part of the CTD data collected from the equatorialwestern Pacific Ocean, the results show that the temperature fine structure has selfsimilarity and may be describedwith fractal. The singularity exponents of temperature series and their probability distributions are also calculated. Theprobability distribution functions (pdfs) have nearly a universal form. The nonzero probability at negative exponentsimplies the possible existence of sigular points in the temperature profiles. When computing the averaged period of theWT,we find that the mean period of the WT of the temperature series has a power dependence on the transformscale a, i. e. , with ￣ 1 . This suggests that a simple dichomotous cascading mechanism may govern thefine-structure dynamics. In addtion, since the amplitudes of the wavelet transform is related with the strength of thetemperature fluctuations, the vertical distribution of fluctuation energy can be calculated by wavelet ***-pared to the FFT spectrum, the WT spectrum is more smooth and is capable of giving more accurate spectral slopes.

Biphasic Nano-Domains of Planar Lipid Bilayer Complexed with Fluorogenic Polymer Reporter Tailored for Antimicrobial Detection

We have fabricated an unexpected type of supported planar bilayer composed of receptor phospholipids and single-chained diacetylenes as fluorogenic reporters using protruded anchor moieties with a positive terminal *** topographical and surface thermodynamic analyses,as well as molecular dynamics simulations,revealed the coexistence of well-dispersed liquid-condensed(L_(c))domains forming nano-islands and liquid-expanded(L_(e))region in the planar bilayer,enhancing sensitivity against a prototype of ubiquitous membrane-associated antimicrobial peptides,*** L_(e)regions,acting as target receptors,enabled sensitive detection as the melittin adsorbed and inserted into these regions due to strong hydrophobic interactions between phospholipids and *** L_(c)domains,serving as signal reporters,enabled diacetylenes to assemble,polymerize,and fluoresce in response to the insertion of melittin into the L_(e)***,biphasic nanodomains of the planar lipid bilayer finally endowed this sensor system with a detection range of 100μMto 50 nM and a limit of detection(LOD)of∼37 nM for *** exceeded the operational performance of the colorimetric polydiacetylene vesicle solution 45 times,which reportedly ranged from 100 to 4μM with an LOD of∼1.7μM.

Human skin contains slowly adaptive(SA)and rapidly adaptive(RA)mechanoreceptors,which respond differently to external *** on human tactile perception principles,the fabrication of a self-powered electronic skin(e-skin)that simultaneously mimics SA-and RA-mechanoreceptors is a prime need for robots and artificial prosthetics to interact with the surrounding ***,the complex process of merging multimode sensors to mimic SA-and RA-mechanoreceptors hinders their utilization in *** proposed SA-and RA-mechanoreceptors based on n-type and semi-insulating GaN nanowire *** SA-and RA-mechanoreceptors demonstrated distinguished features such as grasping of objects and detection of their surface *** on piezoelectric sensing principles,the proposed e-skin can simultaneously mimic static and dynamic pressure *** further detected several stimuli of various pressures with low and high *** response and reset times showed by SA-mechanoreceptors were 11 and 18 ms under 1-Hz frequency,which are rapid enough for practical e-skin applications.

exploring Long COVID: Healthcare Utilization Up to 360 Days after a COVID-19 Diagnosis—Results from Analysis of a Very Large US National Sample

The topic of the long-term effects of COVID-19, so-called “long-COVID”, has gained increased attention. The US federal government announced plans to develop an interagency national research action plan to uncover more insights into the long-term effects of COVID-19. This study contributes to our understanding of the long-term effects of COVID-19 by quantifying patterns of healthcare utilization up to 360 days after an initial COVID-19 diagnosis occurring during the beginning of the pandemic (March-August 2020) in a very large nationally representative population of insured adults. We quantify actual COVID-19-related utilization (as opposed to reported symptoms) by accessing claims data to calculate average medical visits per patient per month by type of encounter (e.g. inpatient stay, physician visit). In contrast to many recent reports in the media, our results show that COVID-19-related utilization declines substantially after the first-month post-diagnosis and continues to decline throughout the study period to very low levels.
