An automatic optimization method for minimizing supporting structures in additive manufacturing

The amount of supporting structure usage has been a major research topic in layer-based additive manufacturing(AM)over the past years as it leads to increased fabrication time and decreased surface quality.Previous studies focused on deformation and topology optimization to eliminate the number of support structures.However,during the actual fabrication process,the properties of shape and topology are essential.Therefore,they should not be modified casually.In this study,we present an optimizer that reduces the number of supporting structures by identifying the prime printing direction.Without rotation,models are projected in each direction in space,and the basis units involved in the generation of support structures are separated.Furthermore,the area of the supporting structures is calculated.Eventually,the prime printing direction with minimal supporting area is obtained through pattern-searching method.The results of the experiment demonstrated that the printing area was reduced by up to 60%for some cases,and the surface quality was also improved correspondingly.Furthermore,both the material consumption and fabrication time were decreased in most cases.In future work,additional factors will be considered,such as the height of the supporting S Xiao-jun Chen xiaojunchen@*** 1 Institute of Biomedical Manufacturing and Life Quality Engineering,State Key Laboratory of Mechanical System and Vibration,School of Mechanical Engineering,Shanghai Jiao Tong University,Shanghai 200240,P.R.China 2 OMFS-IMPATH Research Group,Department of Imaging and Pathology,Faculty of Medicine,Katholieke Universiteit Leuven,Leuven,Belgium 3 Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery,University Hospitals Leuven,Leuven,Belgium structures and the adhesion locations to improve the efficiency of this optimizer.

Energy Harvesting in the Wake of An Inverted C-Shaped Bluff Body

This paper proposes a novel wake-induced vibration(WIV)-based energy harvesting system consisting of two bluff bodies.An inverted C-shaped bluff body is stationary installed at the upstream position to generate an interference wake street,and a cylinder bluff body equipped with a transducer is elastically suspended at the downstream position to harness WIV energy.The hydrodynamics and energy harvesting(EH)performance of the proposed system are investigated via experimental studies.The reduced velocity(U*)ranging from 2 to 14(the corresponding Reynolds number ranging from 15100 to 106200)is considered in the present study.It is found that the wake generated by the inverted C-shaped bluff body significantly affects the EH performance.Enlarging the opening angle(α)of the C-shaped bluff body increases the vibration amplitude of the downstream cylinder,thereby increasing the harvested power.When the spacing(L)between two bluff bodies is two times the cylinder diameter(D),the wake-induced vibration(WIV)mode is observed,while the combined WIV and wake galloping(WG)mode occurs whenαis 150°,and L equals 3D or 4D.The average drag coefficient becomes negative when L is 2D,3D,or 4D.By carefully configuring a C-shaped bluff body,the wake generated by it can bring an augmenting effect on the vibration of the downstream EH cylinder.For example,the RMS power output of the proposed EH system reaches a maximum of 0.31 W at U*=8 and L=4D,which is 300%greater than that of its traditional counterpart.Furthermore,after a number of case stud-ies,it is identified that the proposed EH system can achieve the best performance whenαis 150°and L=2D.

The triboelectric nanogenerator(TENG)can effectively collect energy based on contact electrification(CE)at diverse interfaces,including solid–solid,liquid–solid,liquid–liquid,gas–solid,and gas–liquid.This enables energy harvesting from sources such as water,wind,and sound.In this review,we provide an overview of the coexistence of electron and ion transfer in the CE process.We elucidate the diverse dominant mechanisms observed at different interfaces and emphasize the interconnectedness and complementary nature of interface studies.The review also offers a comprehensive summary of the factors influencing charge transfer and the advancements in interfacial modification techniques.Additionally,we highlight the wide range of applications stemming from the distinctive characteristics of charge transfer at various interfaces.Finally,this review elucidates the future opportunities and challenges that interface CE may encounter.We anticipate that this review can offer valuable insights for future research on interface CE and facilitate the continued development and industrialization of TENG.

Coupled conditional nonlinear optimal perturbations and their application to ENSO ensemble forecasts

Limitations are existed in current ensemble forecasting initial perturbation methods for describing the interactions among various spheres of the Earth system. In this study, a new method is proposed, namely, the coupled conditional nonlinear optimal perturbation(C-CNOP) method, which incorporates multisphere interactions much appropriately. The El Nino-Southern Oscillation(ENSO) is a typical ocean-atmosphere “coupling”(or “interaction”) phenomenon. The C-CNOP method is applied to ensemble forecasting of ENSO. It is demonstrated that the C-CNOP method can generate coupled initial perturbations(CPs) that appropriately consider initial ocean-atmosphere coupling uncertainty for ENSO ensemble forecasts. Results reveal that the CPs effectively improve the ability of ENSO ensemble-mean forecasts in both temporal variability of Nio3.4 sea surface temperature anomalies(SSTAs) and spatial variability of ENSO mature-phase SSTAs. Notably, despite the weakest ocean-atmosphere coupling strength in the tropical Pacific occurring during the boreal spring and summer, CPs still capture the uncertainties of this weak coupling when ENSO predictions are initialized at these seasons. This performance of CPs significantly suppresses the rapid increase of ENSO prediction errors due to the high ocean-atmosphere coupling instability during these seasons, and thus effectively extends the lead time of skillful ENSO forecasting. Hence, the C-CNOP method is a suitable initial perturbation approach for ENSO ensemble forecast that can describe initial ocean-atmosphere coupling uncertainty. It is expected that the CCNOP method plays a significant role in predictions of other high-impact climate phenomena, and even future Earth system predictions.

Effectiveness of Histopathological Examination of Ultrasound-guided Puncture Biopsy Samples for Diagnosis of Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis

Objective To evaluate the diagnostic value of histopathological examination of ultrasound-guided puncture biopsy samples in extrapulmonary tuberculosis(EPTB).Methods This study was conducted at the Shanghai Public Health Clinical Center.A total of 115patients underwent ultrasound-guided puncture biopsy,followed by MGIT 960 culture(culture),smear,Gene Xpert MTB/RIF(Xpert),and histopathological examination.These assays were performed to evaluate their effectiveness in diagnosing EPTB in comparison to two different diagnostic criteria:liquid culture and composite reference standard(CRS).Results When CRS was used as the reference standard,the sensitivity and specificity of culture,smear,Xpert,and histopathological examination were(44.83%,89.29%),(51.72%,89.29%),(70.11%,96.43%),and(85.06%,82.14%),respectively.Based on liquid culture tests,the sensitivity and specificity of smear,Xpert,and pathological examination were(66.67%,72.60%),(83.33%,63.01%),and(92.86%,45.21%),respectively.Histopathological examination showed the highest sensitivity but lowest specificity.Further,we found that the combination of Xpert and histopathological examination showed a sensitivity of 90.80%and a specificity of 89.29%.Conclusion Ultrasound-guided puncture sampling is safe and effective for the diagnosis of EPTB.Compared with culture,smear,and Xpert,histopathological examination showed higher sensitivity but lower specificity.The combination of histopathology with Xpert showed the best performance characteristics.

Effect of Central Multiphase Microstructure of Thick Plates on Work Hardening and Crack Propagation

The effect of multiphase microstructure in the center segregation zones(CSZ)of high-strength steel thick plates on work hardening characteristics and crack initiation/propagation were studied.Microstructure was correlated with deformation damage behavior by using Taylor factor(TF)gradients,kernel average misorientation(KAM),and geometric necessary dislocation(GND)density.The results show that the segregation leads to a mixed structure of ferrite(soft phase)and martensite/bainite(hard phase)in the center of the thick plate.Compared to the 1/4 thickness(1/4 T)region,grain refinement occurred in the CSZ,with KAM values increasing from 0.24 to 0.49 and a decrease in the proportion of high-angle grain boundaries(>15°)from 77.4 to 51.8%.In the process of deformation,due to the influence of grain refinement and adjacent martensite/bainite,ferrite grains were divided into structural units with different TF values.The higher KAM value and GND density at the interface between soft/hard phases resulted in severe work hardening.In addition,the presence of micron-sized inclusions in the CSZ caused local strain concentration and non-continuous deformation of the matrix,which induced crack initiation.The fracture surface showed a mixed mode of brittle cleavage fracture and ductile fracture.

2D–3D dual carbon layer confined ultrasmall VN nanoparticles for improving lithium-ion storage in hybrid capacitors

Lithium-ion capacitors(LICs) of achieving high power and energy density have garnered significant attention. However, the kinetics unbalance between anode and cathode can impede the application of LICs. Vanadium nitride(VN) with a high theoretical specific capacity(~ 1200 m Ah·g^(-1)) is a better pseudocapacitive anode to match the response of cathode in LICs. However, the insertion/extraction of Li-ions in VN's operation results in significant volume expansion. Herein, the VN/N-r GO-5composite that three-dimentional(3D) dicyandiamidederived-carbon(DDC) tightly wrapped VN quantum dots(VN QDTs) on two-dimentional(2D) reduced graphene oxid(r GO) was prepared by a facile strategy. The VN QDTs can reduce ion diffusion length and improve charge transfer kinetics. The 2D r GO as a template provides support for nanoparticle dispersion and improves electrical conductivity. The 3D DDC tightly encapsulated with VN QDTs mitigates agglomeration of VN particles as well as volume expansion. Correspondingly, the LICs with VN/Nr GO-5 composite as anode and activated carbon(AC) as cathode were fabricated, which exhibits a high energy density and power density. Such strategy provides a perspective for improving the electrochemical properties of LIC anode materials by suppressing volume expansion and enhancing conductivity.

SAT-Based Automatic Searching for Differential and Linear Trails: Applying to CRAX

Boolean satisfiability problem(SAT) is now widely applied in differential cryptanalysis and linear cryptanalysis for various cipher algorithms.It generated many excellent results for some ciphers,for example,Salsa20.In this research,we study the differential and linear propagations through the operations of addition,rotation and XOR(ARX),and construct the SAT models.We apply the models to CRAX to search differential trails and linear trails automatically.In this sense,our contnbution can be broadly divided into two parts.We give the bounds for differential and linear cryptanalysis of Alzette both up to 12 steps,by which we present a 3-round differential attack and a 3-round linear attack for CRAX.We construct a 4-round key-recovery attack for CRAX with time complexity289times of 4-round encryption and data complexity 225.
