Protective Effects of Anthocyanins Extracted from Vaccinium Uliginosum on 661W Cells Against Microwave-Induced Retinal Damage

Objective: To study the protective effect of anthocyanins extracted from Vaccinium Uliginosum(VU)on retinal 661W cells against microwave radiation induced retinal injury. Methods: 661W cells were divided into 6 groups, including control, model [661W cells radiated by microwave(30 mW/cm2, 1 h)] and VU groups [661W cells pretreated with anthocyanins extracted from VU(25, 50, 100 and 200 μg/mL, respectively) for 48 h, and radiated by microwave 30 mW/cm2, 1 h]. After treatment with different interventions, the cell apoptosis index(AI)was determined using Heochst staining;contents of malonaldehyde(MDA), glutataione(GSH), and activity of superoxide dismutase(SOD) were measured. mRNA expressions of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2(Nrf2) and heme oxygenase 1(HO-1) were detected by real time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and the expression of HO-1 protein was examined by Western blot analysis. Nucleus and cytoplasm were separated and Nrf2 protein expression was further verified by Western blot analysis. Results: There was significant difference in AI among the groups(F=322.83, P<0.05). Compared with the control group, AI was significantly higher in the model group and was lower in 4 VU-pretreated groups(P<0.05). Linear regression analysis showed the decline of AI was in a dose-dependent manner with VU treatment(r=0.8419, P<0.05). The MDA and GSH contents of 661W cells in VU-treated groups were significantly lower than the model group(P<0.05). Compared with the model group, the SOD activity in the VU-treated groups(50, 100 and 200 μg/mL) was significantly higher(all P<0.05). The Nrf2 and HO-1 mRNA expressions were slightly increased after irradiation, and obviously increased in 100 μg/mL VU-treated group. After irradiation, the relative expressions of HO-1 and Nrf2 proteins in nucleus were slightly increased(P<0.05), and the changes in cytoplasm were not obvious,whereas it was significantly increased in both nucleus and cytoplasm in the VU treatment groups. Evolution of copper species during heat treatment and its effect on CO oxidation reaction on CuCeZrO_(y) catalyst synthesized by a facile solvent-free route

Several ternary oxides CuCeZrO_(y)(CCZ)were synthesized by a facile grinding method followed by calcination at high temperatures,and used as catalysts for CO oxidation at low temperatures.The influences of calcination temperature(400-600℃)on the physicochemical properties of the assynthesized ternary oxides were investigated by thermogravimetric analysis/differential scanning calorimetry(TGA/DSC),X-ray diffraction(XRD),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),Raman,inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry(ICP-OES),N_(2) adsorption,H_(2)-temperature programmed reduction(H_(2)-TPR),and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS)characterizations.The results show that the increase in calcination temperature from 400 to 500℃is conducive to the high dispersion of CuOx on catalyst surface and the incorporation of Cu species into the support to form the Cu-Ce-Zr-O solid solution.Further raising of calcination temperature from 500 to 600℃,however,leads to the segregation of Cu species from the solid solution to aggregate on support surface and growth of highly dispersed CuOx nanoparticles.The highest catalytic activity is acquired over the CCZ calcined at 500℃,which can be ascribed to the largest contents of Cu+species and oxygen vacancies owing to the formation of the maximum amount of Cu-Ce-Zr-O solid solution.

Based on the inter-provincial panel data from 200 to 2014 in China,this paperapplies the spatial panel simultaneousequations model to test the impact of localgovermments'tax competition and industrial structure adjustment on the regionalgreen development in China.The conclusions are as follows.Local govermments'tax competition and industrial development have a negative impact on greendevelopment.Tax competition and industrialization in the neighboring regions willalso suppress local green development through the negative incentives of"race to thebottom",Evidently,regulating the tax competition behavior of the local governmentand rationally guiding the upgrading of local industrial structure have importantpolicy implications for the high-quality growth of China's regional economy and thegreen,coordinated development between regions in the new era.

Resource-Constrained Edge AI with Early Exit Prediction

By leveraging the data sample diversity,the early-exit network recently emerges as a prominent neural network architecture to accelerate the deep learning inference process.However,intermediate classifiers of the early exits introduce additional computation overhead,which is unfavorable for resource-constrained edge artificial intelligence(AI).In this paper,we propose an early exit prediction mechanism to reduce the on-device computation overhead in a device-edge co-inference system supported by early-exit networks.Specifically,we design a low-complexity module,namely the exit predictor,to guide some distinctly“hard”samples to bypass the computation of the early exits.Besides,considering the varying communication bandwidth,we extend the early exit prediction mechanism for latency-aware edge inference,which adapts the prediction thresholds of the exit predictor and the confidence thresholds of the early-exit network via a few simple regression models.Extensive experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of the exit predictor in achieving a better tradeoff between accuracy and on-device computation overhead for early-exit networks.Besides,compared with the baseline methods,the proposed method for latency-aware edge inference attains higher inference accuracy under different bandwidth conditions.

Investigations on Fluid Resonance Within A Narrow Gap Formed by Two Fixed Bodies with Varying Breadth Ratios

The resonant motion of the fluid inside a narrow gap between two fixed boxes induced by incident regular waves with various wave heights is investigated by adopting a two-dimensional numerical wave flume based on an opensourced CFD package,OpenFOAM.The two boxes have identical draft and height,but the upstream box has a variable breadth.This article focuses on the influences of the breadth ratio,defined as the ratio of the breadth of the upstream box to that of the downstream box,on the following three aspects of hydrodynamic characteristics of gap resonance:(1)the wave height amplifications inside the gap,and in front and at the rear of the structure system,(2)the reflection,transmission,and energy loss coefficients of the structure system,and(3)the response and damping time of the fluid resonance.It is found that the fluid resonant frequency,the amplification factor of the resonant wave height inside the gap and the maximum energy loss coefficient of the structure system are shown to gradually decrease with the increase of the breadth ratio.The response time of gap resonance is shown to first increase and then decrease with the breadth ratio overall,regardless of the incident wave height,and the configuration that the two boxes have the same breadth would bring the largest response time of gap resonance.

Thoracic spinal cord injury and paraplegia caused by intradural cement leakage after percutaneous kyphoplasty: A case report

BACKGROUND Percutaneous kyphoplasty(PKP)is a pivotal intervention for osteoporotic fractures,pathological vertebral compression fractures,and vertebral bone tumors.Despite its efficacy,the procedure presents challenges,notably complications arising from intradural cement leakage.Timely and accurate diagnosis,coupled with emergent intervention is imperative to improve patient prognosis.This case report illuminates the intricacies and potential complications associated with PKP,emphasizing the critical need for vigilant monitoring,prompt diagnosis,and immediate intervention to mitigate adverse outcomes.CASE SUMMARY A 58-year-old male patient,experiencing a T7 osteoporosis-related pathological compression fracture,underwent PKP at a local hospital.Two weeks postprocedure,the patient developed paraplegic and dysuric symptoms,necessitating emergency decompression surgery.Gradual improvement was achieved,marked by the restoration of muscle strength,sensation,and mobility.CONCLUSION PKP Intradural cement leakage following PKP is unusual and potentially fatal.Prompt imaging examinations,urgent evaluation,and the decompression surgery are essential,which help alleviate symptoms associated with spinal damage,markedly improving the overall prognosis.

For the birth–death Q-matrix with regular boundary,its minimal process and its maximal process are closely related.In this paper,we obtain the uniform decay rate and the quasi-stationary distribution for the minimal process.And via the construction theory,we mainly derive the eigentime identity and the distribution of the fastest strong stationary time(FSST)for the maximal process.

Background:Asymptomatic or symptomatic infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)can be followed by reinfection.The protection conferred by prior infection among coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)patients is unclear.We assessed the incidence of SARS-CoV-2 reinfection and the protection effect of previous infection against reinfection.Methods:We searched PubMed,EMBASE,Cochrane,Scopus,Web of Science,and ClinicalTrials.gov for publications up until the end date of May 1,2021.The reinfection rate of recovered patients and the protection against reinfection were analyzed using meta-analysis.Results:Overall,19 studies of 1096 reinfection patients were included.The pooled reinfection rate was 0.65%(95%confidence interval[CI]0.39-0.98%).The symptomatic reinfection rate was a bit lower(0.37%[95%CI 0.11-0.78%],I^(2)=99%).The reinfection rate was much higher in high-risk populations(1.59%[95%CI 0.30-3.88%],I^(2)=90%).The protection against reinfection and symptomatic reinfection was similar(87.02%[95%CI 83.22-89.96%]and 87.17%[95%CI 83.09-90.26%],respectively).Conclusions:The rate of reinfection with SARS-CoV-2 is relatively low.The protection against SARS-CoV-2 after natural infection is comparable to that estimated for vaccine efficacy.These data may help guide public health measures and vaccination strategies in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.High-quality clinical studies are needed to establish the relevant risk factors in recovered patients.

The surface activation of boron to improve ignition and combustion characteristic

Boron is a very promising and highly attractive fuel because of high calorific value. However, the practical applications in explosives and propellants of boron have been limited by long ignition delay time and low combustion efficiency. Herein, nano-Al and graphene fluoride(GF) as surface activated materials are employed to coat boron(B) particles to improve ignition and combustion performance. The reaction heat of nano-Al coated B/KNO_(3)and GF coated B/KNO_(3)are 1116.83 J/g and 862.69 J/g, respectively, which are higher than that of pure B/KNO_(3)(823.39 J/g). The ignition delay time of B/KNO_(3)could be reduced through nano-Al coating. The shortest ignition delay time is only 75 ms for B coated with nano-Al of 8 wt%, which is much shorter than that of pure B/KNO_(3)(109 ms). However, the ignition delay time of B/KNOcoated with GF has been increased from 109 to 187 ms. B coated with GF and nano-Al shown significantly influence on the pressure output and flame structure of B/KNO_(3). Furthermore, the effects of B/O ratios on the pressure output and ignition delay time have been further fully studied. For B/KNO_(3)coated with nano-Al and GF, the highest pressures are 88 KPa and 59 KPa for B/O ratio of 4:6, and the minimum ignition delay time are 94 ms and 148 ms for B/O ratio of 7:3. Based on the above results, the reaction process of boron coated with GF and nano-Al has been proposed to understand combustion mechanism.

DIVERGENT EFFECT OF EXPECTANCY ON TREATMENT RESPONSE BETWEEN REAL AND SHAM ACUPUNCTURE

Background: Expectancy has been hypothesized as a critical component of the placebo response; however, change in expectancy during acupuncture trials has not been previously evaluated.We sought to evaluate the relationship between expectancy and treatment response in both real and sham acupuncture.Methods: We analyzed data from a recently completed randomized controlled trial using real electroacupuncture(EA) and sham acupuncture(SA).The trial was conducted among 67 women with stage I-III breast cancer who experienced joint pain attributable to aromatase inhibitors.Responders were classified as those who reported "much improved" or "very much improved" on the Patient Global Impression of Change instrument at week 8(End of intervention).The Acupuncture Expectancy Scale(AES), a validated instrument, measured expectancy at baseline, week 2, 4, and 8.In this scale, a higher score indicates a greater degree of expectancy.Results: Responders in the SA group had higher expectancy at baseline than non-responders(15.5 vs.12.1, P=0.005).Expectancy remained higher in SA responders through the end of intervention(16.0 vs.11.4, P=0.035).Responders and non-responders in the EA group, by contrast, did not have different expectancy levels at baseline(14.8 vs.15.3, P=0.64).By the end of the intervention, however, EA responders had significantly higher expectancy than non-responders(16.2 vs.11.7, P=0.0038).Conclusion: The relationship between expectancy and treatment response is distinct between real and sham acupuncture.Our findings suggest that while higher outcome expectancy predicts treatment response in sham acupuncture, such a predisposition is not associated with the response to electro-acupuncture.Once patients develop a response to real acupuncture, their expectancy rises significantly.These findings have important implications for both acupuncture research and clinical practice.
