On August 8, 2017, a M7.0 earthquake occurred in Jiuzhaigou County, Sichuan Province, China, resulting in significant casualties and property damage. Therefore, it is critical to identify the areas of potential aftershocks before reconstruction and re-settling people to avoid future disasters. Based on the elastic dislocation theory and a multi-layered lithospheric model, we calculate the Coulomb failure stress changes caused by the Wenchuan and Jiuzhaigou earthquakes, discuss the relationship between the Mw7.9 Wenchuan and M7.0 Jiuzhaigou earthquakes, and analyze the influence of the aftershock distribution and stress changes on the major faults in this region caused by the Jiuzhaigou earthquake. The co-and post-seismic stress changes caused by the Wenchuan earthquake significantly increased the stress accumulation at the hypocenter of the Jiuzhaigou earthquake. Therefore,the occurrence of the Jiuzhaigou earthquake was probably stimulated by the Wenchuan earthquake. The aftershock distribution is well explained by the co-seismic stress changes of the Jiuzhaigou earthquake. The stress accumulation and corresponding seismic hazard on the Maqu-Heye segment of the East Kunlun fault and the northern extremity of the Huya fault has been further increased by the Jiuzhaigou earthquake.

Development of pore structures of activated carbon(AC)from activation of biomass with ZnCl_(2) relies on content and structure of cellulose/hemicellulose in the feedstock.Thermal pretreatment of biomass could induce dehydration and/or aromatization to change the structure of cellulose/hemicellulose.This might interfere with evolution of structures of AC,which was investigated herein via thermal pretreatment of willow branch(WB)from 200 to 360℃and the subsequent activation with ZnCl_(2) at 550℃.The results showed that thermal pretreatment at 360℃(WB-360)could lead to substantial pyrolysis to form biochar,with a yield of 31.9%,accompanying with nearly complete destruction of cellulose crystals and remarkably enhanced aromatic degree.However,cellulose residual in WB-360 could still be activated to form AC-360 with specific surface area of 1837.9 m~2·g^(-1),which was lower than that in AC from activation of untreated WB(AC-blank,2077.8 m~2·g^(-1)).Nonetheless,the AC-200 from activation of WB-200 had more developed pores(2113.9 m~2·g^(-1))and superior capability for adsorption of phenol,due to increased permeability of ZnCl_(2) to the largely intact cellulose structure in WB-200.The thermal pretreatment did increase diameters of micropores of AC but reduced the overall yield of AC(26.8%for AC-blank versus 18.0%for AC-360),resulting from accelerated cracking but reduced intensity of condensation.In-situ infrared characterization of the activation showed that ZnCl_(2) mainly catalyzed dehydration,dehydrogenation,condensation,and aromatization but not cracking,suppressing the formation of derivatives of cellulose and lignin in bio-oil.The thermal pretreatment formed phenolic-OH and C=O with higher chemical innerness,which changed the reaction network in activation,shifting morphology of fibrous structures in AC-blank to“melting surface”in AC-200 or AC-280.

On the basis of the previous studies, the simplest hyperbolic mild-slope equation has been gained and the linear time - dependent numerical model for the water wave propagation has been established combined with different boundary conditions. Through computing the effective surface displacement and transforming into the real transient wave motion, related wave factors will be calculated. Compared with Lin＇s model, analysis shows that calculation stability of the present model is enhanced efficiently, because the truncation errors of this model are only contributed by the dissipation terms, but those of Lin＇s model are induced by the convection terms, dissipation terms and source terms. The tests show that the present model succeeds the merit in Lin＇ s model and the computational program is simpler, the computational time is shorter, and the computational stability is enhanced efficiently. The present model has the capability of simulating transient wave motion by correctly predicting at the speed of wave propagation, which is important for the real - time forecast of the arrival time of surface waves generated in the deep sea. The model is validated against analytical solution for wave diffraction and experimental data for combined wave refraction and diffraction over a submerged elliptic shoal on a slope. Good agreements are obtained. The model can be applied to the theory research an d engineering applications about the wave propagation in a biggish area.

The tide-induced net advective salt flux in well-mixed estuaries consists of five terms according to the method from Kjerfve.The term resulted from the vertical variation in salinity can be negligible in well-mixed estuaries with four tide-induced salt flux terms,known as F1−F4.To explore the effects of wind on these salt fluxes,the current-salinity analytical model combined with the perturbation analysis is extended by including wind.Analytical expressions for the four salt fluxes are derived separately in the present model.Under the assumption that only the M_(2) tidal component is accounted for and the salt flux generated by diffusion is not studied,the tide-induced net advective salt flux Q_(sx) is in the seaward direction without the wind effect.By applying the Western Scheldt estuary case,the wind influence on the tidal advection salt flux(TASF)distribution in the F4 term was investigated.The phase difference between zero-order velocity and first-order salinity(Δφ)at the surface layer of the estuary is larger than 90°and smaller than 90°at the bottom layer,which leads to landward TASF in the surface layer and seaward TASF in the bottom layer.The distribution ofΔφis not uniform in the horizontal direction with wind included,which differs from the result without wind.In the case of seaward wind with the speed of 18 m/s,the decrease in the zeroth-order velocity phase(φu)at the surface layer is larger than that of the first-order salinity phase(φs)downstream,which leads to an abnormal seaward TASF in this region.Owing to the surface stress caused by wind,the Stokes compensation flow in the middle and lower reaches increases/decreases with the increase of the landward/seaward wind,while the upstream situation is opposite.Thus,the first-order velocity in the middle and lower reaches increases/decreases with the increase of the landward/seaward wind,while the upstream situation is also opposite.The first-order salinity also increases/decreases with the increase of landward/seaward wind,while the upstream salinity

Natural rubber (NR) is widely used in various fields including aerospace, military industry and transportation due to its superior elasticity and comprehensive mechanical properties. Nonetheless, the commercial NR prepared by different methods usually exhibits different mechanical properties, primarily due to variations in processing conditions during the conversion from latex to bulk rubber material. Consequently, this poses challenges in scientific research and industrial production of NR. In order to assess the properties of various commercially available NR and identify key structural and compositional components, this study systematically compares and analyzes four representative NR raw materials: air dried sheet (ADS), ribbed smoked sheets (RSS), constant viscidity NR (CV), and whole field latex rubber (WF). The investigation focuses on evaluating their static mechanical behavior, SIC behavior, wear resistance, and fatigue resistance. The findings indicate that protein and gel content exhibit a crucial influence on the NR properties. These constituents contribute to the formation of a high-crosslinking density region, generating a heterogeneous network structure within the rubber. This structure amplifies strains during deformation, leading to earlier and stronger strain-induced crystallization (SIC). Among the four commercial NR brands, RSS demonstrates superior overall mechanical and dynamic properties owing to its high protein and gel content. This study serves as a valuable reference for comprehending the differences in properties among various commercial NR, thereby offering guidance for the actual processing and selection of NR.

Exosomes derived from pulmonary metastatic sites enhance osteosarcoma lung metastasis by transferring the miR-194/215 cluster targeting MARCKS

Osteosarcoma,a prevalent primary malignant bone tumor,often presents with lung metastases,severely impacting patient survival rates.Extracellular vesicles,particularly exosomes,play a pivotal role in the formation and progression of osteosarcoma-related pulmonary lesions.However,the communication between primary osteosarcoma and exosome-mediated pulmonary lesions remains obscure,with the potential impact of pulmonary metastatic foci on osteosarcoma progression largely unknown.This study unveils an innovative mechanism by which exosomes originating from osteosarcoma pulmonary metastatic sites transport the miR-194/215 cluster to the primary tumor site.This transportation enhances lung metastatic capability by downregulating myristoylated alanine-rich C-kinase substrate(MARCKS)expression.Addressing this phenomenon,in this study we employ cationic bovine serum albumin(CBSA)to form nanoparticles(CBSA-anta-194/215)via electrostatic interaction with antagomir-miR-194/215.These nanoparticles are loaded into nucleic acid-depleted exosomal membrane vesicles(anta-194/215@Exo)targeting osteosarcoma lung metastatic sites.Intervention with bioengineered exosome mimetics(anta-194/215@Exo)not only impedes osteosarcoma progression but also significantly prolongs the lifespan of tumor-bearing mice.These findings suggest that pulmonary metastatic foci-derived exosomes initiate primary osteosarcoma lung metastasis by transferring the miR-194/215 cluster targeting MARCKS,making the miR-194/215 cluster a promising therapeutic target for inhibiting the progression of patients with osteosarcoma lung metastases.

BACKGROUND Multilocular thymic cyst(MTC)is a rare mediastinal lesion which is considered to occur in the process of acquired inflammation.It is usually characterized by well-defined cystic density and is filled with transparent liquid.CASE SUMMARY We report on a 39-year-old male with a cystic-solid mass in the anterior mediastinum.Computer tomography(CT)imaging showed that the mass was irregular with unclear boundaries.After injection of contrast agent,there was a slight enhancement of stripes and nodules.According to CT findings,it was diagnosed as thymic cancer.CONCLUSION After surgery,MTC accompanied by bleeding and infection was confirmed by pathological examination.The main lesson of this case was that malignant thymic tumor and MTC of the anterior mediastinum sometimes exhibit similar CT findings.Caution is necessary in clinical work to avoid misdiagnosis.

AlCrN coating was prepared on the surface of TiC-based cermet cutting tool with cathodic arc ion plating,and the surface-interface morphologies,compositions of chemical elements,and phases were analyzed by scanning electron microscope(SEM),energy dispersive spectrometer(EDS),and X-ray diffraction(XRD),respectively.Bonding strength of the coating-substrate interface was measured with scratching test,and the wear mechanism and friction coefficient of TiC-based cermet cutting tool and AlCrN coating were investigated with friction and wear testing machine.The results show that the interface binding of AlCrN coating is metallurgical mode,and its binding strength is 83 N.The average friction coefficient of TiC-based cermet cutting tool under the load of 6 N is 0.8409,while that under the load of 8 N decreases by about 11%,and the wear mechanism of TiC cermet cutting tool is fatigue wear,abrasive wear,and oxidation wear.The average friction coefficient of AlCrN coating is 0.6363 under the load of 6 N,and the change is relatively stable,decreasing by about 25%than that of TiC-based cermet cutting tool;when the load increases to 8 N,the average friction coefficient of AlCrN coating decreases by 9%.The wear mechanism of AlCrN coating is abrasive wear and oxidation wear,showing lower friction coefficient and good wear resistance.

DEAR EDITOR,The green peafowl (Pavo muticus) is one of the most threatened pheasants in the world. In China, it is widely appreciated for its beauty as well as historical and cultural value, but current populations number less than 500 individuals. Recently, Tang and colleagues reported in Science that the green peafowl is likely to become extinct due to the construction of the Jiasajiang Level 1 Hydropower Station within the Red River Upstream District (RRUD) and thus called for a stop to this project (Tang et al., 2019). According to our recent surveys, however, this species is still extant in 22 counties of Yunnan Province, China, among which, only two within the RRUD have been predicted to be affected by floods from the hydropower station. Therefore, the conclusion that the species will likely go extinct in China upon completion of the dam is unwarranted. In fact, construction of the Jiasajiang Level 1 Hydropower Station was stopped in August 2017. The main challenge for green peafowl conservation is that over 65% of the population occurs outside of protected reserves in China. Fortunately, the Chinese government has adopted an Ecological Redline (ERL) strategy to achieve ecological civilization plans, thus bringing new hope to the conservation of green peafowls both inside and outside of protected reserves. As a top conservation priority for China, the government is fully committed to conserving this peafowl.

BACKGROUND Capecitabine(CAP)is a classic antimetabolic drug and has shown potential antirejection effects after liver transplantation(LT)in clinical studies.Our previous study showed that metronomic CAP can cause the programmed death of T cells by inducing oxidative stress in healthy mice.Ferroptosis,a newly defined non-apoptotic cell death that occurs in response to iron overload and lethal levels of lipid peroxidation,is an important mechanism by which CAP induces cell death.Therefore,ferroptosis may also play an important role in CAP-induced T cell death and play an immunosuppressive role in acute rejection after transplantation.AIM To investigate the functions and underlying mechanisms of antirejection effects of metronomic CAP.METHODS A rat LT model of acute rejection was established,and the effect of metronomic CAP on splenic hematopoietic function and acute graft rejection was evaluated 7 d after LT.In vitro,primary CD3+T cells were sorted from rat spleens and human peripheral blood,and co-cultured with or without 5-fluorouracil(5-FU)(active agent of CAP).The levels of ferroptosis-related proteins,ferrous ion concentration,and oxidative stress-related indicators were observed.The changes in mitochondrial structure were observed using electron microscopy.RESULTS With no significant myelotoxicity,metronomic CAP alleviated graft injury(Banff score 9 vs 7.333,P<0.001),prolonged the survival time of the recipient rats(11.5 d vs 16 d,P<0.01),and reduced the infiltration rate of CD3+T cells in peripheral blood(6.859 vs 3.735,P<0.001),liver graft(7.459 vs 3.432,P<0.001),and spleen(26.92 vs 12.9,P<0.001),thereby inhibiting acute rejection after LT.In vitro,5-FU,an end product of CAP metabolism,induced the degradation of the ferritin heavy chain by upregulating nuclear receptor coactivator 4,which caused the accumulation of ferrous ions.It also inhibited nuclear erythroid 2 p45-related factor 2,heme oxygenase-1,and glutathione peroxidase 4,eventually leading to oxidative damage and ferroptosis of T cells.CONCLUSION
