Local convergence zones or discontinuous lines in the Taklimakan Desert, Northwest China

In order to study convergence zones or discontinuous lines formed locally in the Taklimakan Desert,we analyzed available MODIS images onboad TERRA or AQUA satellite for ten cases:29 March 2002,14 April 2002;2 January 2003;21 April 2003;26 March 2004;28 April 2004;30 January 2005;25 june 2005;3 December 2005;and 26 July *** used weather maps published by the Japan Mete-orological Agency for the Asia and Pacific region at 500 hPa,700 hPa and 850 hPa,at 00Z and 12Z to analyze the meteorological conditions occurring in each *** estimated the positions of air streams,convergence zones or discontinuous lines between them,and thermal conditions on the maps and con-firmed the presence of cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds through satellite images in *** a review of previous studies,this paper introduced the results of the present *** warm areas in the Taklimakan Desert and on the Tibetan Plateau and local convergence zones or discontinuous lines in the Taklimakan Desert were discussed together with their diurnal changes,using composite maps of the ten *** the long axis of the desert the convergence zones or discontinuous lines normally extend 70-80 km in a west-east direction,but are suspected to exceed 100 km in extreme *** the other hand,the convergence zones or discontinuous lines extending in a north-south direction on the southern fringe of the desert have a length of 40-60 *** closed warm areas show clear diurnal changes,but they were not detected at the 500 hPa *** example of a clear convergence zone running in a north-south direction on 26 July 2006 was presented in detail with corresponding satellite images.

A new approach to transfect NF-κB decoy oligodeoxynucleotides into the periodontal tissue using the ultrasound-microbubble method

The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of the ultrasound-microbubble technique in nuclear factor kappa B(NF-κB) decoy oligodeoxynucleotide(ODN) transfection in the gingival tissue in mice. The 6-FAM-labeled scrambled decoy ODN with microbubbles was applied to the periodontal tissue in 8-week-old male C57BL/6J mice by ultrasound radiation at low(LUM-Sc) and high(HUM-Sc) intensities to optimize the transfection condition of the ultrasound-microbubble *** inspections were performed two hours after transfection to compare the expression with that in the sham-operated group without ultrasound radiation(A-Sc). Then, an NF-κB decoy was transfected into the periodontal tissue using the highintensity ultrasound-microbubble(HUM-NF) technique to examine the anti-inflammatory effects of the decoy ODN. Western blot analysis was performed to investigate the expression of interleukin(IL)-1β, IL-6 and intercellular adhesion molecule-1(ICAM-1)in the gingival tissues in the HUM-Sc, the HUM-NF and control groups. The fluorescence microscopy results showed that the fluorescent intensity in the periodontal tissues in the LUM-Sc and HUM-Sc groups was significantly higher than that in the A-Sc and the control groups. The fluorescent intensity in the HUM-Sc group, especially in the gingival connective tissue,was the highest of all groups. Western blot analysis indicated that the protein expression levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and ICAM-1 in the HUM-NF group were significantly lower than those in the HUM-Sc and the control groups. These findings suggest that the high-intensity ultrasound-microbubble technique is an effective tool for decoy transfection into the periodontal tissue.

Improvement of thermal environment and reduction of energy consumption for coolin8 and heating by retrofitting windows

Various techniques for creating a comfortable thermal environment and saving energy have been proposed and employed in residential buildings in many countries, including Japan. For these techniques to be introduced, existing houses should be renovated. Among the techniques available, installation of additional inner windows is effective in creating a comfortable and energy-efficient living environment. In the present research, the effect of additional inner windows on the thermal environment and energy saving was investigated by measuring indoor climates. Windows were renovated in two rooms on the fourth floor of a four-story reinforced concrete building. Air temperatures, the humidity, the global solar radiation on horizontal and vertical surfaces, radiant temperatures, and the electricity consumption of air-conditioners were measured. A comparison of these vatues before and after the installation of inner- windows showed that the thermal environment and energy saving had improved. Results obtained from a thermal model agreed well with measured results by changing the value of solar transmittance and heat transmission coefficient of the glazing forlowing renovation. Furthermore, in a questionnaire survey conducted in summer, more than half of the occupants answered ＂cornfortabte＂ to a question on the overall thermal comfort.

Influence of periodontitis on abdominal aortic aneurysms

Periodontitis is known to be a risk factor for abdominal aortic aneurysm(AAA). However, the influence of periodontitis on AAA development is to be elucidated. This article is to review the relationship between periodontitis and AAA. We focused on the roles of specific periodontopathic bacteria in AAA, matrix metalloproteinases and toll-like receptors in the pathophysiology in the section of experimental analysis. Furthermore, we showed clinical data of periodontitis in patients with AAA. We concluded that periodontal pathogens play a critical role in the AAA development.

Effects of Clearance around Square Pillar in Rectangular Enclosure on Cooling Performance of Pulsating Airflow

This study focuses on a development of heat transfer enhancement techniques using pulsating flow for thermal equipment such as electronic equipment and heat exchangers. In this report, the heat transfer performance of the pulsating airflow around the heating pillar mounted in the rectangular enclosure was investigated experimentally while changing the size of the clearance between the enclosure wall and the pillar. The pillar simulates the components mounted in thermal equipment such as fins and electrical components. The rectangular enclosure simulates an enclosure of electronic equipment and heat exchangers. The shape of the cross section of the pillar was square having sides 30 mm. The dimension of the width of the enclosure was changed from 50 mm to 80 mm. It was found that the heat transfer performance of the pulsating airflow became higher than that of the steady flow regardless of the dimension of the clearance. The heat transfer enhancement around heating components by the pulsating flow can be available regardless of the clearance around the components.

Fe-based metallic glasses are promising functional materials for advanced magnetism and sensor *** magnetic performance in amorphous materials requires a thorough knowledge of the correlation between structural disorder and magnetic order,which remains *** practical difficulties remain:the first is directly observing subtle magnetic structural changes on multiple scales,and the second is precisely regulating the various amorphous *** we propose a novel approach to tailor the amorphous structure through the liquid-liquid phase ***-situ synchrotron diffraction has unraveled a medium-range ordering process dominated by edge-sharing cluster connectivity during the liquid-liquid phase ***,nanodomains with topological order have been found to exist in composition with liquid-liquid phase transition,manifesting as hexagonal patterns in small-angle neutron scattering *** liquid-liquid phase transition can induce the nanodomains to be more locally ordered,generating stronger exchange interactions due to the reduced Fe–Fe bond length and the enhanced structural order,leading to the increment of saturation ***,the increased local heterogeneity at the medium-range scale enhances the magnetic anisotropy,promoting the permeability response under applied stress and leading to a better stress-impedance *** experimental results pave the way to tailor the magnetic structure and performance through the liquid-liquid phase transition.

Preparation of Fluoroalkyl End-Capped Oligomer/Cyclodextrin Polymer Composites: Development of Fluorinated Composite Material Having a Higher Adsorption Ability toward Organic Molecules

Fluoroalkyl end-capped vinyltrimethoxysilane oligomer [RF-(CH2CHSi(OMe)3)n-RF;RF = CF(CF3)OCF7, n = 2, 3;RF-(VM)n-RF] was applied to the preparation of fluoroalkyl end-capped vinyltrimethoxysilane oligomer/α-, β-, γ-cyclodextrin polymers (α-, β-, γ-CDPs) composites [RF-(VM-SiO2)n-RF/α-, β-, γ-CDPs] by the sol-gel reaction of the corresponding oligomer in the presence of the α-, β-, γ-CDPs under alkaline conditions. The RF-(VM-SiO2)n-RF/α-, β-, γ-CDPs composites thus obtained were found to give a good dispersibility toward the traditional organic media except for water, and were applied to the surface modification of glass to provide a sueperoleophilic/superhydrophobic characteristic on the modified surface, although the corresponding RF-(VM-SiO2)n-RF nanocomposites can give a usual oleophobic/superhydrophobic property on the surface. These composites powders were also found to be applicable to the packing material for the column chromatography to separate the mixture of oil/water and the water in oil (W/O) emulsions. More interestingly, these composite powders were found to have a higher adsorption ability toward not only low-molecular weight aromatic compounds such as bisphenol A and bisphenol AF but also volatile organic compounds, compared to that of the pristine α-, β-, γ-CDPs.

Specific endoscopic features of ulcerative colitis complicated by cytomegalovirus infection

AIM:To identify specific colonoscopic findings in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) complicated by cyto-megalovirus (CMV) ***: Among UC patients who were hospitalized due to exacerbation of symptoms, colonoscopic findings were compared between 15 CMV-positive patients and 58 CMV-negative patients. CMV infection was determined by blood test for CMV antigenemia. Five aspects of mucosal changes were analyzed (loss of vascular pattern, erythema, mucosal edema, easy bleeding, and mucinous exudates) as well as five aspects of ulcerative change (wide mucosal defect, punched-out ulceration, longitudinal ulceration, irregular ulceration, and cobble-stone-like appearance). Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of each finding for CMV positivity were ***: The sensitivity of irregular ulceration for positive CMV was 100%. The specificity of wide mucosal defect was 95%. Punched-out ulceration and lon-gitudinal ulceration exhibited relatively high sensitivity and specificity (more than 70% for each).CONCLUSION:Specific colonoscopic findings in patients with UC complicated by CMV infection were identified. These findings may facilitate the early diagnosis of CMV infection in UC patients.

Atomically phase-matched second-harmonic generation in a 2D crystal

Second-harmonic generation(SHG)has found extensive applications from hand-held laser pointers to spectroscopic and microscopic ***,some cleavable van der Waals(vdW)crystals have shown SHG arising from a single atomic layer,where the SH light elucidated important information such as the grain boundaries and electronic structure in these ultra-thin ***,despite the inversion asymmetry of the single layer,the typical crystal stacking restores inversion symmetry for even numbers of layers leading to an oscillatory SH response,drastically reducing the applicability of vdW crystals such as molybdenum disulfide(MoS_(2)).Here,we probe the SHG generated from the noncentrosymmetric 3R crystal phase of MoS_(2).We experimentally observed quadratic dependence of second-harmonic intensity on layer number as a result of atomically phase-matched nonlinear dipoles in layers of the 3R crystal that constructively *** studying the layer evolution of the A and B excitonic transitions in 3R-MoS_(2) using SHG spectroscopy,we also found distinct electronic structure differences arising from the crystal structure and the dramatic effect of symmetry and layer stacking on the nonlinear properties of these atomic *** constructive nature of the SHG in this 2D crystal provides a platform to reliably develop atomically flat and controllably thin nonlinear media.
