The sweetener compounds in Stevia, steviol glycosides (SG), are mainly found in the leaves. The SG content depends on the plant’s growth stage and is usually highest just before flowering. In temperate areas, Stevia is a polyannual crop (5 - 7 years) with a vegetative period lasting from April-May until October, during which time the crop can be harvested two or three times. This research focuses on the need for knowledge about Stevia’s response to temperate climates in Southern Europe. Two field assays were established from June to October 2013 at two sites in Navarra (Spain). The biomass and content of the two major SG, stevioside (ST) and rebaudioside A (RA), were measured using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) in 66 cloned plants, at different developmental stages. Although the results from the two sites showed different SG leaf content dynamics during the plant growth, the optimum harvest date at both sites coincided with the bud-flowering stage at the beginning of September (around 96 days after planting), when a ST yield of 27 g·m-2 was reached. These results show Stevia’s potential as a commercial crop for stevioside production in northern Spain.

During 2011 a client came seeking assistance for the development of a roadside property located on the main highway to the Caribbean Coast from Costa Rica’s capital san José;he had in mind a barbecue restaurant for truckers and road users,but was challenged to ponder on pursuing a truly sustainable and inclusive approach for his project.A living and evolving micro-urban system inspired in permaculture was *** the initial conversations,the owner went on to study sustainable production practices,bio-intensive agriculture,wood construction and related *** came back on 2013 and the first phase was finally built in *** all was to start as a small roadside café,with the eventual establishment of an organic *** portions of old walls and floors remaining on site,as fragments of a formerly burned down building,were salvaged/recycled and utilized in combination with new light wood structures,minimally touching the ground yet maximizing space quality and *** small cafe quickly turned into a lively and successful brick-oven pizza place and gastro-pub with current plans to expand into the diversified organic marketplace once *** sustainable building features include the salvaging of existing structures and floors,the use of reforestation wood(teak,melina)processed on site,and the implementation of passive tropical design *** project has its own organic orchard and composting systems and priority is given to locally sourced produce and *** energy expenditure is minimized by traditional wood cooking *** venue has positively influenced and contributed to the local community and the sustainable/organic culture of our small green *** all combines together to create a business model based on sustenance,learning and information exchange,adding up to much more than the sum of its parts.

Green Synthesis and Antibacterial Properties of Silver Nanoparticles from Eugenia uniflora Fruit Extract

The synthesis of nanoparticles by biological methods using microorganisms, enzymes, or plant extracts has been suggested as a possible ecofriendly alternative to chemical and physical methods that involve the use of harmful reducing agents. Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was achieved using Eugenia uniflora ripe fruit extract, which was characterized by phytochemical screening revealing the presence of polyphenols (quinones, flavonoids, and tannins), reducing compounds, and terpenes. These excellent antioxidants reduced silver nitrate to give the AgNPs, which were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), and ζ potential analysis. The diameter of the AgNPs ranged from 10.56 ± 1.2 nm to 107.56 ± 5.7 nm. The antibacterial activity of the AgNPs was evaluated using a modification of the Kirby-Bauer technique with Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. The inhibition halos were 11.12 ± 0.02 mm, 13.96 ± 0.07 mm, and 11.29 ± 0.76 mm, respectively. The synthesis using E. uniflora is an ecofriendly and low cost method of obtaining silver nanoparticles that could be used in health sciences because of their activity against bacteria with antibiotic resistance.

Fungal Decay, Coating, Burning Properties and Change of Color of Particleboards Manufactured with Woody Biomass, Agricultural Wastes and Tetra Pak Residues

Lignocellulosic residues resulting from agricultural activities and urban centers cause pollution. A possible solution to this problem is to combine these residues with woody plants to produce particleboards. The purpose of this study was to evaluate decay resistance, coating and burning properties and the change of color caused by accelerated weathering of particleboards manufactured with a combination of 3 woody species used for commercial reforestation in tropical areas (Cupressus lusitanica, Gmelina arborea and Tectona grandis), pineapple (Ananas comosus) leaves from the crown and the plant (PL), empty fruit bunch of Elaeis guineensis (EBF) and tetra pak packages (TP). According to the results, the mixtures of T. grandis and EFB were classified as moderately resistant and other mixtures (woody species and PL or TP) were classified as slightly resistant. The finish performance test determined that the mixtures with TP presented the best performance, followed by the mixtures with oil palm components and the mixtures composed of pineapple leaves. Regarding lacquer consumption, no differences were found between the mixtures. The combustion test determined that particleboards with TP and EFB showed the highest resistance to combustion, while pineapple presented the lowest resistances to combustion. In the accelerated weathering exposure test, the mixtures of the three species with TP showed the best performance in accelerated weathering. Contrariwise, the mixtures with pineapple leaves showed the lowest resistance to accelerated weathering. Oil palm particleboards presented lower resistance to weathering than TP, though higher than pineapple leaves’ resistance.
