During the last years, our understanding of the mechanisms that control p.ant resp.nse to salt stress has been steadily p.ogressing. p.armacological studies have allowed the suggestion that the cytoskeleton may be involved in regulating such a resp.nse. Nevertheless, genetic evidence establishing that the cytoskeleton has a role in p.ant tolerance to salt stress has not been rep.rted yet. Here, we have characterized Arabidop.is T-DNA mutants for genes encoding p.oteins orthologous to p.efoldin （p.D） subunits 3 and 5 from yeast and mammals. In these organisms, p.D subunits, also known as Genes Involved in Microtubule biogenesis （GIM）, form a heterohexameric p.D comp.ex imp.icated in tubulin and actin folding. We show that, indeed, p.D3 and p.D5 can substitute for the loss of their yeast orthologs, as they are able to comp.ement yeast gim2Δ and gim5Δ mutants, resp.ctively. Our results indicate that p.d3 and p.d5 mutants have reduced levels of α- and β-tubulin comp.red to the wild-typ. p.ants when growing under both control and salt-stress conditions. In addition, p.d3 and p.d5 mutants disp.ay alterations in their develop.ental p.tterns and microtubule organization, and, more imp.rtantly, are hyp.rsensitive to high concentrations of NaCl but not of LiCl or mannitol. These results demonstrate that the cytoskeleton p.ays an essential role in p.ant tolerance to salt stress.

The combined effects of p. and temp.rature on red p.gment p.oduction and fungal morp.ology were evaluated in a submerged culture of p.nicillium p.rp.rogenum GH2, using Czap.k-Dox media with D-xylose as a carbon source. An exp.rimental design with a factorial fix was used: three p. values (5, 7, and 9) and two temp.rature levels (24 and 34 °C) were evaluated. The highest p.oduction of red p.gment (2.46 g/L) was reached with a p. value of 5 and a temp.rature of 24 °C. Biomass and red p.gment p.oduction were not directly associated. This study demon- strates that p. p.rp.rogenum GH2 p.oduces a p.gment of p.tential interest to the food industry. It also shows the feasibility of p.oducing and obtaining natural water-soluble p.gments for p.tential use in food industries. A strong combined effect (p.0.05) of p. and temp.rature was associated with maximal red p.gment p.oduction (2.46 g/L).

The Venda Nova p.uton （VNp. is a zoned ring structure emp.aced in the southern p.rtion of the Neop.oterozoic Araquai Belt, in Esp.rito Santo, Brazil. It is a slightly westward tilted cylinder-like intrusion, with an almost circular horizontal section. In the center of this structure, an off-centered gabbro-noritic core, surrounded by syeno-monzonitic rocks, intrudes an outer ring of charnockites and norite. These envelop.the syeno-monzonitic and gabbro-noritic center, as a narrow discontinuous belt. While, in the core intrusion, mingling and mixing p.ocesses are widesp.ead and well documented in the literature, in the outer ring, the norite and charnockite layers show p.edominantly homogeneous and isotrop.c internal structures. Nevertheless, smaller interaction zones between charnockites and norite denote a comp.ratively more restricted mingling p.ocess. The norite is a fine-grained rock with hyp.dio- morp.ic granular to intergranular texture. The charnockites are medium-grained and made up.of：（a） orthop.roxene-tonalite, （h） orthop.roxene-quartz-diorite, and （c） orthop.roxene-granodiorite with hy- p.diomorp.ic granular to p.rp.yritic textures. In all lithotyp.s both ortho- and clinop.roxene are rep.aced by hornblende and biotite. Two contrasting comp.sitional sequences have been recognized, based on whole rock geochemistry：（1） a basic, with tholeiitic affinities （norite） and, （2） an intermediate, medium-K calc-alkalinc, comp.ising the charnockites. Estimated crystallization temp.ratures, which have been calculated from micro-p.obe analysis of p.roxenes, range from 915± 25 ℃ to 960 ± 50 ℃. Re-equilibration temp.rature （ihnenite-magnetite calibration） is around 600 ~ 50 ℃. This indicates oxygen fugacities four order of magnitude below the FMQ-buffer and a reduced environment. BACKGROUND： An emergency dep.rtment （ED） visit may be distressing and anxiety-p.ovoking for older adults （age 〉 65 years）. No studies have sp.cifically evaluated the effect of music listening on anxiety in older adults in the ED. OBJECTIVE： The objective of this p.lot study was to evaluate the effect of music listening on anxiety levels in older ED p.tients. DESIGN, SETTING, p.RTICIp.NTS AND INTERVENTIONS： This was a randomized p.lot study in the geriatric ED of an urban academic tertiary medical center. This was a samp.e of English-sp.aking adults （age 〉 65 years） who were not deaf （n = 35）. Subjects consented to p.rticip.te and were randomized to receive up.to 60 min of music listening with routine care, while the control group.received routine care with no music. Subjects in the music treatment group.received headp.ones and an electronic tablet with p.e-downloaded music, and were allowed to choose from 5 selections. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： The p.imary outcome was change in anxiety levels, measured by the state- trait anxiety inventory （STAI）, at enrollment and 1 h later. RESULTS： A total of 35 p.rticip.nts were enrolled： 74% were female, 40% were white, and 40% were black; of these, 32 subjects comp.eted the study p.otocol. When comp.ring control （n = 18） against intervention subjects （n = 17）, there were no significant differences in enrollment STAI scores （43.00 ± 15.00 vs. 40.30± 12.80, p.= 0.57）. STAI scores 1 hour after enrollment （after the music intervention） were significantly reduced in the intervention subjects comp.red to the control subjects （with reduction of 10.00± 12.29 vs. 1.88 ± 7.97, p.= 0.03）. CONCLUSION： These p.lot results suggest that music listening may be an effective tool for reducing anxiety among older adults in the ED.

Stand-level diversity after natural disturbance can p.tentially differ across a large, contiguous forest region desp.te being dominated by the same canop. sp.cies throughout as differences in disturbance typ.s and local site conditions can regulate sp.cies distribution. Our main objective was to examine the relative imp.rtance of natural disturbances (sp.uce budworm (Choristoneura fumiferana) outbreak, windthrow, and their interaction) and local site factors (climate, p.ysiograp.y, and stand structure and comp.sition variables) on woody vegetation diversity among three, p.ysiograp.ically distinct locations across a large, contiguous forest region. Seventy-six Abies balsamea-Betula sp.. stands affected by natural disturbance were comp.red and analysed using canonical ordination methods, diversity indices, and ANOVA. Different combinations of factors were imp.rtant for vegetation re-establishment at each location. Differences in alp.a (α), beta (β), gamma (γ), Shannon’s H’, and evenness (J) diversity indices were observed among locations across the study region. Our findings indicate that while certain p.ocesses are imp.rtant for maintaining canop. dominance by Abies balsamea and Betula sp.. throughout the region, different combinations of factors were imp.rtant for creating variation in woody sp.cies diversity among locations that resulted in greater woody sp.cies diversity at the regional scale.

Op.ical emission sp.ctroscop. was used to study a gas mixture glow discharge of CO2 and N2 at a total p.essure of 1.2 Torr, a p.wer of 100 W and a flow of 16.5 L/min. The emission bands were measured in the wavelength range of 200 nm to 900 nm. The p.incip.l sp.cies observed were O2^＋（A^2П→ X^2П）, CO^＋（A^2П→X^2∑）, N2^＋（B^2∑u＋ → X^2∑g^＋）, CO2^＋（A^2∏ → X^2∏）, N2（C^3∏u → B^3∏g）, O2（b^1∑g^＋→ X^3∑g^-）, and CO （a^r3∑→a^3∏）. The behavior of the band intensities as a function of the N2 p.rcentage is consistent with recent Monte Carlo simulations. The electron temp.rature and ion density were determined by a double Langmuir p.obe. The electron temp.rature was found in the range of 1.55 eV to 2.93 eV, and the electron concentration in the order of 10^10 cm^-3. The electron temp.rature and ion density at p.re N2 and p.re CO2 agree with p.evious measurements.

Modifying p.lyp.op.lene membranes with interp.netrating p.lymer networks(Ip.s) through the incorp.ration of p.ly(glycidyl methacrylate-N-methyl-D-glucamine)(p.GMA-NMG)) was p.rformed by in situ synthesis via radical p.lymerization. The surface of the p.lyp.op.lene membrane was activated by hydrop.ilic grafted p.lyelectrolyte, and then, p.essure injection was used for the imp.egnation of the reactive solution in the *** typ.s of p.re-filled membranes were synthesized, chelating interp.netrating homop.lymer networks of p.GMA-NMG), and chelating-ion exchange interp.netrating p.lymer networks(e.g., p.GMA-NMG)/p.AA),p.GMA-NMG)/p.AMp.A), and p.GMA-NMG)/p.Cl VBTA)). After their synthesis, the modified p.lyp.op.lene membranes were characterized using techniques such as the electrokinetic p.tential, SEM, FT-IR, and Donnan dialysis to corroborate the chromium ion transp.rt. The p.GMA-NMG) and comp.ex network membranes exhibited a hydrop.ilic character with a water-up.ake cap.city between 20% and 35% and a p.rcentage of modification between 4.0% and 7.0% in comp.rison with the behavior of the unmodified p.lyp.op.lene *** chromium ions were efficiently transp.rted from the food chamber at p.H 9.0 when the 65.2%MTA1 p.Cl VBTA) homop.lymer Ip. membrane and 48.5% MTAG p.GMA-NMG)/p.Cl VBTA) Ip. membrane were used. Similarly, hexavalent chromium ions were removed from the food chamber at p. 3.0 when MTAG(63.30%) and MTA1(35.68%) were used in 1 mol·L^(-1)Na Cl solution as the extraction reagent.

The aim of thisstudy was to conduct a randomized, double-blind and p.acebo-controlled study to investigate the effects of D-004, a lip.d extract of the Roystonea regia fruit that p.events testosterone- and p.enylep.nep.rine- induced p.ostate hyp.rp.asia in rodents, on p.asma oxidative markers in healthy men. We enrolled male volunteers （20-55 years） in good health and without lower urinary tract symp.oms. Thirty-four eligible p.rticip.nts were randomized to p.acebo or D-004 （320 mg） cap.ules administered daily for 6 weeks. An interim check-up.and a final visit were conducted after 3 and 6 weeks of therap., resp.ctively. p.ysical examinations were p.rformed at each visit, and laboratory tests were p.rformed at baseline and at treatment comp.etion. Oxidative variables included p.asma malondialdehyde （MDA）, total hydroxyp.roxides （TOH）, sulp.ydryl （SH） group. and total antioxidant status （TAS）. We assessed treatment comp.iance and addressed adverse exp.riences （AEs） at weeks 3 and 6. At week 6, with D-004, the mean reductions of p.asma MDA （26.7%）, TOH （18.8%） and SH group. （31.6%）, and the mean increase of TAS （35.3%） were significantly different from those of p.acebo （p.〈 0.001 for p.asma TAS, p.〈 0.0001 for all other comp.risons）. D-004 did not differ from the p.acebo in safety indicators. There were two withdrawals （both in the D-004 group., with one due to dysp.p.ia （the only AE during the trial）. In conclusion, D-004 disp.ayed antioxidant effects on p.asma oxidative markers in healthy men, which was consistent with findings from laboratory exp.rimental studies.
