Cultivation of Perennial Herbaceous Legumes in Weed Management in Coffee Plantation on the Cerrado

The aim of this study was to evaluate the cultivation of perennial herbaceous legumes on weed control and yield of the coffee crop in the Cerrado. The experimental design was a randomized complete block with four replications. The 10 treatments tested in factorial 4 × 2 + 2, were four legumes: forage peanut (Arachis pintoi), hybrid Java (Macrotyloma axillare), perennial soybean (Neonotonia wightii) and wild ground nut (Calopogonium mucunoides); two forms in the interrows of coffee plants with two and three rows of legumes spaced by 0.50 m and 0.25 m, respectively; and two additional treatments consisted of hand weeding with hoe and chemical control with glyphosate. The hybrid Java and wild ground nut in the first year and the hybrid Java and perennial soybean in the second year, all followed by forage peanut, promoted lower density and biomass of the weeds. The wild ground nut in the first year and forage peanut in the second year showed higher soil cover. The hybrid Java had its highest biomass production in two years, and wild ground nut being higher in the first year. The cultivation of perennial herbaceous legumes promoted weed control without interfering in the productivity of the coffee crop.

Fungal endophytic species inhabiting the leaves of eucalypts are capable of utilising leaf sugars and can influence both plant growth and health. Endophytic fungal symbionts can use simple soluble sugars in leaves as their main carbon source. This study set out to determine the diversity and distribution of the endophytic filamentous fungal leaf community in the hybrid Eucalyptus urograndis due to its economic importance. The fungal leaf community was characterised using denaturing gradient electrophoresis (DGGE) and correlated with levels of leaf nutrients and sugars throughout plant development. Sequencing of DGGE bands revealed the presence of Basidiomycota and Ascomycota phyla. Fourteen species and three genera of filamentous fungi were identified, and the population structure was affected by the plant developmental stage. Levels of K, Cu, N and Mn influenced communities from the clonal garden, whereas leaves in the field had higher glucose, fructose and sucrose. Many fungi were found to be specific to a certain development stages: Diplomitoporus crustulinus, Podosphaera tridactyla and Aspergillus restrictus to the clonal garden stage;Chaetomella acutiseta and Ascotricha chartarum to the shading stage;Erratomyces patelii and Saxomyces sp. to the shading output stage;Lepidostroma sp. and Saxomyces sp. to the dispatch stage;and Mycosphaerella populicola to the field stage. Teratosphaeria toledana and Teratosphaeria acidotherma were found at more than one developmental stage. Cladosporium sp. and Rhodosporidium fluviale colonized and persisted in plants at the dispatch and field stages. This is the first report of P. tridactyla, A. restrictus, E. patelii, Saxomyces and Lepidostroma sp. as endophytes in eucalipt.

Different leaf(evergreen *** habit)and xylem(***-porous wood)traits represent contrasting strategies to face seasonal changes in water availability and ***,how contrasting leaf and xylem habits of coexisting tree species affect stem wood formation and tree-ring development remains poorly ***,we investigated the spatio-temporal patterns of wood formation in two deciduous oaks(Quercus faginea and Quercus petraea)and two evergreen oaks(Quercus ilex and Quercus suber)coexisting in seasonally dry Mediterranean forests along an aridity gradient in *** hypothesized that growth responses to drought and intra-and inter-annual growth patterns would differ between functional *** simulated intra-and interannual growth using a modified version of the Vaganov-Shashkin(VS)process-based,growth *** VS model simulations were used to estimate growth changes under a high emission scenario(RCP 8.5)for the current distribution of the study oak species and to forecast their future performance under warm(4.8℃)conditions in the Iberian *** simulations indicate that climate warming would induce a shortening of the ringgrowth season and a reduction of radial growth in evergreen and deciduous Mediterranean oaks,particularly in dry sites from southern and eastern Iberia currently occupied by *** and *** oaks may better recover after dry periods than deciduous oaks by resuming growth after the summer *** soil water availability in spring would be more detrimental to growth of deciduous ***-based growth models should be refined and validated to better forecast changes in tree growth as a function of climate.

Energy Efficiency in Smart Grid: A Prospective Study on Energy Management Systems

The term Smart Grid has become a term to represent the benefits of a smart and sophisticated electrical grid, which can meet various social expectations related to sustainability and energy efficiency. The Smart Grid promises to enable a better power management for energy utilities and consumers, to provide the ability to integrate the power grid, to support the development of micro grids, and to involve citizens in energy management with higher levels of responsibility. However, this context comes with potential pitfalls, such as vulnerabilities to cyber-security and privacy risks. In this article, a prospective study about energy management, and exploring critical issues of modeling of energy management systems in a context Smart. Grid is presented along with background of energy management systems. An analysis of the demand response condition is also presented. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of the implementation of energy management systems, and a comparison with the Brazilian electricity system are discussed.

Electromagnetic Torque Estimation of a Three-Phase Induction Motor for Setting the Feedrate of a Milling Machine

In this paper, it presents a project of a fuzzy controller and a neural estimator to control a coordinate table powered by three-phase induction motor, aiming to implement an intelligent milling system. The position/speed control is performed using vector techniques of three-phase induction machines. The estimation of the motor electromagnetic torque is used for setting the feedrate of the table. The speed control is developed using TS (Takagi-Sugeno) fuzzy logic model and electromagnetic torque estimation using neural network type LMS (least mean square) algorithm. The induction motor is powered by a frequency inverter driven by a DSP (digital signal processor). Control strategies are implemented in DSP. Simulation results are presented for evaluating the performance of the system.

Electromagnetic Zero-Sequence Harmonics Blocker： Modeling and Experimental Analysis

This paper reveals new contributions to the analysis and development of devices for harmonic distortion mitigation. Considering the sequential distribution of harmonic currents, zero-sequence components could be diminished using electromagnetic devices, particularly the eZSB (electromagnetic zero-sequence blocking). One important characteristic of this device, which has received particular attention on this research, is its robustness and low cost of construction. Theoretical and experimental results related to the behavior of the electromagnetic blocking devices are presented. The results illustrate the consistence of the theoretical aspects related with the model in the frequency domain, as well as the performance of the blocking devices, reducing zero-sequence harmonic currents, mainly by the conjunct action of the eZSF (electromagnetic zero-sequence harmonic filter), working as a impedance coupler. In this context, aiming the evaluation of the reliability of the results obtained through mathematical modeling, experimental tests have been carried out using a low-power prototype, highlighting particular aspects related to its function as a zero-sequence harmonic blocker.
