Impacts of COVID-19 on children and adolescents:A systematic review analyzing its psychiatric effects

Intense Rainfall in São Carlos/SP: Determination of Threshold Values Using Climate Indices and Their Spatio-Temporal Repercussion

The intense and extreme rains in southeastern Brazil are spatially and temporally dynamic, corroborating their substantial complexity regarding understanding and associations. Therefore, the present study aimed at determining threshold values for events of intense and extreme rainfall in the region of São Carlos/SP using a climatic index, as well as temporal and spatial observations. The RClimdex script, Rnn index, and the detection of outliers were employed in order to mark and establish intense and extreme rainfall thresholds for the region. Values of 10 mm and 20 mm of rain were considered typical and of greater recurrence, and their incidence over a period of 24 hours did not necessarily denote intense events. In turn, values of 35, 46, and 60 mm indicate pluviometric rates that impact on significant disasters, as verified in the IPMET/UNESP natural disasters database. It is important to emphasize that values below 60 mm of daily rainfall may also indicate disaster contexts. However, they do not exclude the necessity to verify the intensity, duration, and frequency of intense rain events, and can delineate thresholds for territorial management organizations in their planning.

Microbiological Assessment of Soil Planted with Cover Crops, and Soybean and Maize in Succession

This study aimed to assess the population density of nematodes and mycorrhizal soil fungi, in areas cultivated with oats, brachiaria, forage and white lupine, as well as in maize and soybean crops in succession, in order to generate a microbiological indicator of soil quality. In order to assess nematode and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) population densities, the experiment was performed in two stages: the first assessment was performed in the area where different cover crops were planted, in five seasons (0, 60, 90, 120, 150 days after sowing—DAS). In the second stage, soybean and maize crops in succession were assessed. According to the results, free-living nematodes and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi population densities were not affected by the cover crop species used and, therefore, these can be grown prior to soybean and corn crops, without impact to free-living nematodes and AMF. The largest population of saprophyte nematodes and AMF occurred at 90 days. The cultivation of soybean and corn did not influence the number of free-living nematodes, but influenced the number of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. The highest numbers of mycorrhizal fungi Gigaspora margarita and Glomus macrocarpum were found in maize.

The Use of Erythropoietin in Liver Regeneration in Pigs after Partial Hepatectomy

A partial hepatectomy is a surgical procedure performed during the living-donor liver transplantation and sometimes the only option for patients with hepatocarcinoma. However the remnant liver after the hepatectomy is still a major concern. Therefore, the process of liver regeneration has been a constant theme of study in order to optimize this process. Erythropoietin, a hormone produced by the kidney and involved in protecting organs like heart, liver and kidney itself against injuries can be one of these factors that could accelerate the liver regeneration. This study aims to observe if erythropoietin can accelerate the process of liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy in pigs. Methods: 8 pigs were classified into 2 groups of 4 pigs each: the control group and the test group. The animals in the first group underwent an application of saline solution subcutaneous on the day before the hepatectomy. Instead of saline solution, the test groups received a subcutaneous injection of 200 UI/lg of recombinant erythropoietin also on the day before the surgical procedure. After 7 days since the hepatectomy, in each animal the liver was biopsied in two regions, one next to the hepatectomy section and other far from it. The liver regeneration was analyzed using Ki-67. Results: Pigs from control group presented the following results: Control pig I: 30% of regeneration in the hepatectomy section and 10% in the region far from it;control pig II 24% and 4%;control pig III 27% and 7%. The test group presented no significant liver regeneration since Ki-67 could not identify cell proliferation in neither the biopsied areas. Conclusion: Since the number of pigs was not statistically significant, we could not conclude any further hypothesis. We strong believe that enhancing the number of pigs and testing different doses, we will be able to reach further conclusions.

Acellular amniotic membrane (AAM) is a biodegradable and biocompatible natural that has a wide range of applications in the field of pharmaceutics, biomedical, chemical and cosmetics industry. One of the most interesting characteristics of AAM is its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory, anti-angiogenic, anti-fibrosis activity is an attractive approach for treating inflammatory disorders, wounds, and burns. The isolated use of AAM may not be sufficient to produce an adequate anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effect to fulfill different purposes, has attracted considerable attention that has similar properties to the native tissues. This mini-review offers a focuses on modern aspects of the biomaterials, growth factors, biocompatibility, and acellular matrix which are the basic elements for use in the tissue regeneration and replacement after an injury.

Quality of <i>Jatropha curcas</i>L. Seeds Harvested at Different Stages of Fruit Maturation

The aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological quality of Jatropha curcas L. seeds harvested at different stages of fruit maturation and two threshing methods. To analyze the mechanical damage rate an experiment was carried out with five stages of fruit maturation (green, yellow, ripe, dried on the ground and dried on the plant) threshed mechanically and manually. To evaluate the physiological quality, three tests were made;germination, vigor and electrical conductivity, all of them were applied in each storage (0, 120 and 240 days after harvest) and five stages of fruit maturation. It was feasible to infer that the maturation stage of yellow, ripe and dried on the plant fruits showed the best results of the physiological quality of the Jatropha curcas L. seeds. The manual threshing is also recommended in order to preserve the physiological quality of Jatropha curcas L. seeds. When the fruits were harvested at the appropriate stage of maturation (yellow, ripe and dry fruit on the plant) and threshing without mechanical damage, the Jatropha curcas L. seeds are possible to store for 240 days without loss in their germination. Regardless of the threshing system and the maturation stage, the seeds of Jatropha curcas L. lost their vigor from 120 days after harvested, when these seeds were stored in the shadow and in an environment without control on the relative humidity and air temperature.

Educational Video Increases Maternal Self-Efficacy for Prevention of Diarrhoea in Young Children:A Randomised Clinical Trial

The aim of this study was to compare the scores of maternal self-efficacy for child diarrhoea prevention, between intervention and control groups, according to sanitary, social and demographic characteristics. A randomised clinical trial was carried out on 163 mothers of children under 5 years old. Data collection was conducted during two months, at two different moments (M0 and M1);at the moment M0 only the intervention group watched the educational video to promote self-efficacy for child diarrhoea prevention;at M1 (two months later) the scale was applied to both groups. In the intervention group, greater mean self-efficacy scores were obtained compared with the control group. The following variables showed statistically significant associations (p < 0.05) with maternal self-efficacy: age 35 or over;high school education;working outside the home;residence with 4 to 5 people;house not of brick or mortar;public refuse collection;piped water supply;consumption of mineral water;and public sewerage network. After use of the video “Diarrhoea: you can prevent it”, the maternal self-efficacy increased, proving that this strategy is able to assist the nursing staff in educational practices.

Impairment of apoptosis promotes abnormal cellular proliferation and accumulation of genetic alterations. Identifying bioactive compounds extracted from seaweeds that induce apoptosis in cancer cells may be explored as new agents for cancer chemoprevention and/or chemotherapy. The present study aimed to determine the chemical composition and biological activity of the chloroform crude extract and fractions from Antarctic seaweed Desmarestia anceps. The chloroform extract was obtained by three consecutive macerations and the fractionation by vacuum liquid chromatography. The chemical characterization of the extract and fractions was performed through Gas Chromatography. The cytotoxicity of the crude extract and fractions was evaluated by the MTT assay. Cell death and cell cycle evaluation after 24 hours of exposure to chloroform extract were performed by flow cytometry. A total of 48 compounds were identified. The results indicate that chloroform extract and its fractions presented cytotoxic activity against HCT 116 cell line in a dose dependent-manner. Proapoptotic events were observed after chloroform extract exposition, which promoted an increase of multinucleated cells and reduced cell viability. This study was the first to explore cytotoxic potential of seaweed D. anceps fractions against HCT colorectal cancer cell line, suggesting that these macroalgae may be a promising candidate against anticancer activity.

We investigated the effect of annealing time on the structure and optical properties of Sr WO4：Eu^3＋ powders prepared by the non-hydrolytic sol-gel method and heat treated at 800 ℃ for 2,4,8 and 16 *** and differential thermal analyses revealed that Sr WO4：Eu^3＋ powders were obtained at about 800 ℃.X-ray diffraction patterns and Rietveld refinement data confirmed that all powders had a scheelite-type tetragonal ***-Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectra indicated structural order at short range and anti-symmetric stretching vibrations of O-W-O bonds associated with tetrahedral[WO4]*** properties were investigated by ultraviolet-visible（UV-vis）diffuse reflectance,and photoluminescence（PL）data which provided the evolution of quantum efficiency（η）and lifetime（τ）.UV-vis spectroscopy evidenced intermediate energy levels within the band gap of Sr WO4：Eu^3＋ *** properties validated that the Eu^3＋ electric-dipole（^5D0→^7F2）transition in PL emission spectra was dominant which proved that Eu^3＋ ions were positioned in a site without an inversion center.[（^5D0→^7F2）/（^5D0→^7F1）]band ratios showed that Eu^3＋ ions were located in a low symmetry *** PL emission,ηandτproved the dependence on the annealing time in the behavior of Sr WO4：Eu3＋powders with a higher relative emission PL intensity as well as higherηandτvalues related to other samples when heat treated at 800℃ for 8 h.

MALDI-TOF MS Assessment to Identify Environmental Mycobacteria

Over the past few decades, there has been a significant increase in the number of mycobacterial species described. Currently, the genus?Mycobacterium?consists of 170 species. Most species are called nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and are potentially or rarely pathogenic and ubiquitous. One of the main challenges in mycobacteriology is the rapid and precise identification of these microorganisms. In this work, we compared two protein extraction protocols for the identification of 38 reference strains and clinical isolates, representing 27 species, by mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to subsequently use the best method for identifying environmental mycobacteria. The results obtained with reference strains and clinical isolates showed that protocol A was effective in identifying 92.1% of mycobacterial specimens at the species level and protocol B, 50%. Therefore, protocol A was evaluated for the rapid identification of 27 environmental mycobacterial isolates. These isolates were subjected to PCR-restriction enzyme analysis (PRA-hsp65). Two isolates were misidentified by PRA-hsp65, whereas MALDI-TOF MS was able to identify them correctly. The results were confirmed by?hsp65 and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Mass spectrometry has the advantage of being a simpler and faster technique than PRA-hsp65, and our results showed that MALDI-TOF MS is a valuable tool for the identification of environmental mycobacterial isolates.
