Polyoxidovanadates a new therapeutic alternative for neurodegenerative and aging diseases

Aging is a natural phenomenon characterized by a progressive decline in physiological integrity,leading to a deterioration of cognitive function and increasing the risk of suffering from chronic-degenerative diseases,including cardiovascular diseases,osteoporosis,cancer,diabetes,and neurodegeneration.Aging is considered the major risk factor for Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease develops.Likewise,diabetes and insulin resistance constitute additional risk factors for developing neurodegenerative disorders.Currently,no treatment can effectively reverse these neurodegenerative pathologies.However,some antidiabetic drugs have opened the possibility of being used against neurodegenerative processes.In the previous framework,Vanadium species have demonstrated a notable antidiabetic effect.Our research group evaluated polyoxidovanadates such as decavanadate and metforminium-decavanadate with preventive and corrective activity on neurodegeneration in brain-specific areas from rats with metabolic syndrome.The results suggest that these polyoxidovanadates induce neuronal and cognitive restoration mechanisms.This review aims to describe the therapeutic potential of polyoxidovanadates as insulin-enhancer agents in the brain,constituting a therapeutic alternative for aging and neurodegenerative diseases.

Leaching kinetics in cyanide media of Ag contained in the industrial mining-metallurgical wastes in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico

The leaching kinetics in cyanide media of the silver contained in the Dos Carlos waste tailings at the City of Pachuca de Soto, Hidalgo State, Mexico were carried out. The used material contained the following chemical composition: 56 10-6of Ag, 0.6 10 6of Au and 70.43%(by weight) of SiO2; 7.032%(by weight) of Al2O3; 2.69%(by weight) of Fe; 0.46%(by weight) of Mn; 3.98%(by weight) of K2O; 3.34%(by weight) of CaO; 2.50%(by weight) of Na2O; 0.04%(by weight) of Zn; 0.026%(by weight) of Pb. The mineralogical phases present were the following: Silica, albite, argentite, berlinite, orthoclase, potassium jarosite, and natrojarosite. In the leaching kinetics in cyanide media, and under the studied conditions,the effect of the CN concentration on the reaction rate has no effect on the whole process of alkaline cyanidation, of which the reaction order is n 0. Temperature has an effect on the cyanidation rate of the reaction, with an activation energy of 47.9 KJ/mol. At the same time, when the particle size decreases there is an increase in the reaction rate, which is inversely proportional to the particle diameter; when increasing the NaOH concentration there is an increase in the reaction rate Kexp, with a reaction order(n) of 0.215 under the studied ranges.

Background:Tuberculosis is a disease of great relevance since it is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide.Gastrointestinal tuberculosis is an unusual presentation.It is defined as the involvement of any segment of the digestive tract,associated viscera,and peritoneum.The study’s main objective is to collect information from autopsies of patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal tuberculosis in a Pathology reference center in Colombia.Methods:This is a retrospective and descriptive study of autopsy reports.A total of 4,500 autopsies were performed between January 2004 and December 2020.The inclusion criteria were authorization of a family member following local law regulations and a final autopsy diagnosis of gastrointestinal tuberculosis using microscopic visualization.Results:Forty-eight patients with gastrointestinal tuberculosis autopsies were included in our study.Most of the patients were male(n=35,72.9%)with a median age of 40.5 years old.Human immunodeficiency virus infection history was reported in 28 cases(58.33%).The most affected gastrointestinal tract site was the terminal ileum.Ulcers and thickened epithelium were common autopsies macroscopic findings.Tuberculosis multiorgan compromise was a relevant finding in patients with gastrointestinal tuberculosis.Conclusions:Gastrointestinal tuberculosis is a disease of great importance,being its diagnosis a clinical challenge.Underdiagnosis can be reported in a high percentage of cases,so autopsy diagnosis can help reveal more accurate data about this condition.

Dermatoscopy in the Diagnosis of Vulvar Basal Cell Carcinoma:A Case Report

Introduction: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common human malignancy commonly in white people, but in less than 1% of cases it may appear on unexposed areas, like the perineal and anal regions. Vulvar BCC is often diagnosed late because it grows slowly and tends to be asymptomatic, with no specific physical findings. Here, we present a rare Latin patient with a 10-year history of vulvar BCC with dermatoscopic and histopathologic findings.Case report: A 65-year-old Latin woman presented with a nodule on her left labium majus, which she first noted 10 years ago, and that had grown slowly but constantly. She also reported a 20-year history of pruritus and occasional pain. Physical examination showed a 3.5 cm × 3.0 cm erythematous lesion with a central rough without inguinal lymphadenopathy. Contact dermatoscopy (Dermalite DL3 Gen.) showed one blurred cluster of arborising vessels in a pinkish background with white homogeneous areas and lines radial converging. An incisional biopsy was realized, and histopathology diagnosed BCC.Discussion: Vulvar BCC is a rare malignancy that affects mainly Caucasian women over 70 years of age. The most common etiology for BCC is ultraviolet radiation, but as the vulva is unexposed its cause is unclear. Mutations in tumor suppressor and regulatory genes such as p53 are present in 50% of cases. Gorlin syndrome, chronic radiation, chronic arsenic exposure, xeroderma pigmentosum, and immunosuppression have been considered as risk factors.Conclusion: Vulvar BCC characteristics are the same as other cutaneous forms, featuring blue ovoid nests and arborizing telangiectasia, confused with inflammatory diseases, such as eczema, psoriasis, and chronic infection (especially if it is accompanied by pruritus), this makes diagnosis complex, with a delay of 5 to 6 years on average, with an average size of 2.1 cm. Diagnosis is enhanced with dermatoscopy, as the preferred treatment for most BCC cases is wide surgical excision.

Red pigment production by Penicillium purpurogenum GH2 is influenced by pH and temperature

The combined effects of pH and temperature on red pigment production and fungal morphology were evaluated in a submerged culture of Penicillium purpurogenum GH2, using Czapek-Dox media with D-xylose as a carbon source. An experimental design with a factorial fix was used: three pH values (5, 7, and 9) and two temperature levels (24 and 34 °C) were evaluated. The highest production of red pigment (2.46 g/L) was reached with a pH value of 5 and a temperature of 24 °C. Biomass and red pigment production were not directly associated. This study demon- strates that P. purpurogenum GH2 produces a pigment of potential interest to the food industry. It also shows the feasibility of producing and obtaining natural water-soluble pigments for potential use in food industries. A strong combined effect (p<0.05) of pH and temperature was associated with maximal red pigment production (2.46 g/L).

Ayahuasca(caapi,yajé),is a psychoactive brew from the Amazon Basin region of South America traditionally considered a“master plant.”It is prepared as a decoction from Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis,which it is thought that it stimulates creative thinking and visual creativity.Native healers of the Orinoco and Amazon basins have used traditionally ayahuasca as a healing tool for multiple purposes,particularly to treat psychological disorders in the patients,with some beneficial effects experimentally and clinically validated.Recently,several syncretic religions,as the“Uniao de Vegetal”(UDV)group in Brazil,have been spread around the world.The use of ayahuasca has been popularized by internet and smart-shops,bringing the psychoactive substance to new highs,emerging new“ayahuasqueros.”Ayahuasca has alkaloids asβ-carbolines and dimethyltryptamines,which inhibit the monoamine oxidase and active the 5-HT_(2A)(5-hydroxytryptamine)receptor,respectively,resulting in hallucinations in the users.Ayahuasca induces a psychedelic change in the anteroposterior coupling of the electrophysiological brain oscillations in humans.Traditional ayahuasca beverage is generating pharmacological,commercial and spiritual interest among the scientific community,government people,and different populations worldwide.The goal of this article is to report about the uses,chemistry and biological activities of ayahuasca.

This paper proposes the solution of tasks set required for autonomous robotic group behavior optimization during the mission on a distributed area in a cluttered hazardous terrain.The navigation scheme uses the benefits of the original real-time technical vision system(TVS)based on a dynamic triangulation principle.The method uses TVS output data with fuzzy logic rules processing for resolution stabilization.Based on previous researches,the dynamic communication network model is modified to implement the propagation of information with a feedback method for more stable data exchange inside the robotic group.According to the comparative analysis of approximation methods,in this paper authors are proposing to use two-steps post-processing path planning aiming to get a smooth and energy-saving trajectory.The article provides a wide range of studies and computational experiment results for different scenarios for evaluation of common cloud point influence on robotic motion planning.

Does bilioenteric anastomosis impair results of liver resection in primary intrahepatic lithiasis?

AIM:To evaluate the long-term results of liver resection for the treatment of primary intrahepatic lithiasis.Prognostic factors,especially the impact of bilioenteric anastomosis on recurrence of symptoms were assessed.METHODS:Forty one patients with intrahepatic stones and parenchyma fibrosis/atrophy and/or biliary stenosis were submitted to liver resection.Resection was associated with a Roux-en-Y hepaticojejunostomy in all patients with bilateral stones and in those with unilateral disease and dilation of the extrahepatic biliary duct(>2 cm).Late results and risk factors for recurrence of symptoms or stones were evaluated.RESULTS:There was no operative mortality.After a mean follow-up of 50.3 mo,good late results were observed in 82.9% of patients;all patients submitted to liver resection alone and 58.8% of those submitted to liver resection and hepaticojejunostomy were free of symptoms(P=0.0006).Patients with unilateral and bilateral disease showed good late results in 94.1% and 28.6%,respectively(P<0.001).CONCLUSION:Recurrence of symptoms in patients with hepaticojejunostomy showed that this may not be the ideal solution.Further studies are needed to establish the best treatment for patients with bilateral stones or unilateral disease and a dilated extrahepatic duct.

Impact of Association between Functional Training and Respiratory Muscle Training in Elderly: A Randomized Controlled Trial

The elderly population in Brazil has been growing exponentially according to data presented by the IBGE. It is estimated that by 2025 the population will have reached 32 million, placing the country sixth in the world in the population of elderly people. To assess the results of respiratory training associated with functional training on respiratory muscle strength, lung function, and functionality of the elderly. The sample was composed of 40 elderlies, divided into four groups, the experimental group with functional training, one experimental group with functional training associated with respiratory training, one experimental group with respiratory training, and the fourth group, the control group. After the initial and final evaluations, the variables measured were: The Breathing Test, Sit to Stand Test, the SF-36 Quality of Life Questionnaire, and Spirometry. Twenty appointments were conducted twice a week. There were significant differences for variables maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressure;more accentuated in the associated group when compared to the respiratory group;forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in the first second/forced vital capacity were meaningful in the associated group;peak expiratory flow means values increased after the intervention;in the six-minute walk test, we noticed a trend to increase values after the intervention. Functional training as well as associated respiratory muscle training provide the most beneficial changes compared only to functional and respiratory training. Therefore, this may be an effective clinical training method for patients’ elderly.
