BACKGROUnD Approximately 65%-78%of patients with a spinal cord injury(SCI)develop any symptom of *** aim of this study was to investigate the tolerability and short-term effects of radial extracorporeal shock wave therapy(r ESWT)on plantar flexor spasticity in a patient with incomplete *** SUMMARY An 18-year-old man with an incomplete SCI completed five sessions of r *** primary outcomes were the changes in ankle-passive range of motion(APROM)and passive resistive force to ankle *** outcomes were assessed at baseline(T0),immediately after treatment(T1)and 1 wk after the end of treatment(T2).The A-PROM increased by 15 degrees at T1 and 25 degrees at T2 compared with *** passive resistive force to ankle dorsiflexion at low velocity decreased by 33%at T1 and 55%at T2 in the gastrocnemius muscle and by 41%at T1 and 39%at T2 in the soleus muscle compared with *** high velocity,it also decreased by 44%at T1 and 30%at T2 in the gastrocnemius muscle compared with ***,in the soleus muscle,the change was minor,with a decrease of 12%at T1 and increased by 39%at T2 compared with *** In this patient,the findings showed that r ESWT combined with conventional therapy was well-tolerated and could be effective in improving A-PROM and passive resistive force to ankle dorsiflexion in the *** randomized controlled clinical trials with longer period of follow-up are necessary to confirm the results obtained in patients with SCI.

The earliest stages of plant succession on severely disturbed sites usually follow highly unpredictable trajectories. However, in the Popocatépetl volcano area(50 km SE of Mexico City),the development of physiognomically distinct primary plant communities suggests the occurrence of various successional trajectories only 10 years after the onset of colonization of a temperate forest on lahars. To characterize plant communities and determine the environmental factors that drive the differences observed between plant communities and their successional trajectories, we monitored 64 circular sample plots(3.14 m2) from 2002 to 2011. We examined the plant communities' composition and structure in terms of their species richness and abundance, plant cover, and maximum stem height,and recorded 13 environmental factors related to the volcanic deposit characteristics, microclimate, soil,flow dynamics and gravitational processes. A cluster analysis of the species abundance data showed that,by 2011, six plant community types(CT's) had established, including grasslands, and open, dense and very dense shrub lands. As these communities developed over the same period of time and within the same overall ecosystem, then these plant community types were interpreted as different stages of the same successional trajectory. Two sequential main stages that drive regeneration were identified from this successional trajectory: a) the first four years are characterized by a steady increase in species richness and physiognomic development(plant size and coverage), mostly dominated by Baccharis conferta, Eupatorium glabratum and Senecio barbajohannis; b) from the sixth year onwards, a continued increase in the abundance of those same species led to the development of the dense shrubland *** in the availability of soil resources and disturbances linked to recent lahar flows were the main factors accounting for such differences.

A ratio control strategy has been used to demonstrate the feasibility of this automatic control procedure for the achievement of stable full and partial nitritation. The control strategy assured constant ratio between the dissolved oxygen （DO） and the total ammonia nitrogen （TAn） concentrations in the bulk liquid of aerobic granular sludge reactors operating in continuous mode. Three different set-ups with different reactor capacities were used （3, 110, and 150L）. High strength synthetic wastewaters and reject water were tested with similar performance. Achieved nitrogen loading rates ranged between 0.4 and 6.1 kgn· m^-3·d^-1, at temperatures between 20℃ and 30℃. 1Granular sludge and nitritation were stable in the long term continuous operation of the reactors. Suitable stable effluent for Anammox has been obtained using the desired TAn setpoint （i.e. 50% of influent ammonium oxidation）. An existing biofilm model devel- oped incorporating the implemented control loops and validated in a previous publication was used to investigate the effects of the ammonium concentration of the influent and the biofilm density on the achievement of full nitritation. The model demonstrated how sludge recirculation events led to a stable and significant increase of the biomass concentration in the reactor, which in turn resulted in the achievement of high nitrogen loading rates, due to the action of the control strategy. The model predicted an enhancement of stable full nitritation at higher ammonium concentrations in the influent. Poor influence of the biofilm density in the achievement of full nitritation was predicted with the model.

With the overwhelming number of older reinforced concrete buildings that need to be assessed for seismic vulnerability in a city,local governments face the question of how to assess their building *** leveraging engineering drawings that are stored in a digital format,a well-established method for classification reinforced concrete buildings with respect to seismic vulnerability,and machine learning techniques,we have developed a technique to automatically extract quantitative information from the drawings to classify *** this technique,stakeholders will be able to rapidly classify buildings according to their seismic vulnerability and have access to information they need to prioritize a large building *** approach has the potential to have significant impact on our ability to rapidly make decisions related to retrofit and improvements in our *** the Los Angeles County alone it is estimated that several thousand buildings of this type *** Hassan index is adopted here as the method for automation due to its simple application during the classification of the vulnerable reinforced concrete *** paper will present the technique used for automating information extraction to compute the Hassan index for a large building inventory.

Industry decarbonization requires the development of highly efficient and flexible technologies relying on renewable energy resources,especially biomass and solar/wind *** the case of pure oxygen production,oxygen transport membranes(OTMs)appear as an alternative technology for the cryogenic distillation of air,the industrially-established process of producing ***,OTMs could provide oxygen from different sources(air,water,CO_(2),etc.),and they are more flexible in adapting to current processes,producing oxygen at 700^(-1)000℃.Furthermore,OTMs can be integrated into catalytic membrane reactors,providing new pathways for different *** first part of this study was focused on electrification on a traditional OTM material(Ba_(0.5)Sr_(0.5)Co_(0.8)Fe_(0.2)O_(3-δ)),imposing different electric currents/voltages along a capillary *** to the emerging Joule effect,the membrane-surface temperature and the associated O_(2) permeation flux could be ***,the OTM is electrically and locally heated and reaches 900℃on the surface,whereas the surrounding of the membrane was maintained at 650℃.The O_(2)permeation flux reached for the electrified membranes was~3.7 nmL min^(-1)cm^(-2),corresponding to the flux obtained with an OTM non-electrified at 900℃.The influence of depositing a porous Ce_(0.8)Tb_(0.2)O_(2-δ) catalytic/protective layer on the outer membrane surface revealed that lower surface temperatures(830℃)were detected at the same imposed electric ***,the electrification concept was demonstrated in a catalytic membrane reactor(CMR)where the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane(ODHE)was carried *** reaction is very sensitive to temperature,and here,we demonstrate an improvement of the ethylene yield by reaching moderate temperatures in the reaction chamber while the O_(2) injection into the reaction can be easily fine-tuned.

The potential for the positive manipulation of the gut microbiome through the introduction of beneficial microbes, as also known as probiotics, is currently an active area of investigation. The FAO/WHO define probiotics as live microorganisms that confer a health benefit to the host when administered in adequate amounts. However, dead bacteria and bacterial molecular components may also exhibit probiotic properties. The results of clinical studies have demonstrated the clinical potential of probiotics in many pathologies, such as allergic diseases, diarrhea, inflammatory bowel disease and viral infection. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the beneficial effects of probiotics, most of which involve gene expression regulation in specific tissues, particularly the intestine and liver. Therefore, the modulation of gene expression mediated by probiotics is an important issue that warrants further investigation. In the present paper, we performed a systematic review of the probiotic-mediated modulation of gene expression that is associated with the immune system and inflammation. Between January 1990 to February 2014, PubMed was searched for articles that were published in English using the MeSH terms “probiotics' and 'gene expression' combined with “intestines', 'liver', 'enterocytes', 'antigen-presenting cells', 'dendritic cells', 'immune system', and 'inflammation'. Two hundred and five original articles matching these criteria were initially selected, although only those articles that included specific gene expression results (77) were later considered for this review and separated into three major topics: the regulation of immunity and inflammatory gene expression in the gut, in inflammatory diseases of the gut and in the liver. Particular strains of Bifidobacteria, Lactobacilli, Escherichia coli, Propionibacterium, Bacillus and Saccharomyces influence the gene expression of mucins, Toll-like receptors, caspases, nuclear factor-κ

AIM:To investigate usefulness of adherence to gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) guideline established by the Spanish Association of ***:Prospective,observational and multicentre study of 301 patients with typical symptoms of GERD who should be managed in accordance with guidelines and were attended by gastroenterologists in daily ***(aged > 18 years) were eligible for inclusion if they had typical symptoms of GERD(heartburn and/or acid regurgitation) as the major complaint in the presence or absence of accompanying atypical symptoms,such as dyspeptic symptoms and/or supraesophageal *** and therapeutic decisions should be made based on specific recommendations of the Spanish clinical practice guideline for GERD which is a widely disseminated and well known instrument among Spanish in digestive disease ***:Endoscopy was indicated in 123(41%) patients:50 with alarm symptoms,32 with age > 50 years without alarm ***-two patients(58.5%) had esophagitis(grade A,23,grade B,28,grade C,18,grade D,3).In the presence of alarm symptoms,endoscopy was indicated consistently with recommendations in 98% of ***,in the absence of alarm symptoms,endoscopy was indicated in 33% of patients > 50 years(not recommended by the guideline).Adherence for proton pump inhibitors(PPIs) therapy was 80%,but doses prescribed were lower(half) in 5% of cases and higher(double) in 15%.Adherence regarding duration of PPI therapy was 69%;duration was shorter than recommended in 1%(4 wk in esophagitis grades C-D) or longer in 30%(8 wk in esophagitis grades A-B or in patients without endoscopy).Treatment response was higher when PPI doses were consistent with guidelines,although differences were not significant(95% vs 85%).COnCLUSIOn:GERD guideline compliance was quite good although endoscopy was over indicated in patients > 50 years without alarm symptoms;PPIs were prescribed at higher doses and longer duration.
