Traumatic spinal cord injuries interrupt the connection of all axonal projections with their neuronal targets below and above the lesion site. This interruption results in either temporary or permanent alterations in the locomotor, sensory, and autonomic functions. Damage in the spinal tissue prevents the re-growth of severed axons across the lesion and their reconnection with neuronal targets. Therefore, the absence of spontaneous repair leads to sustained impairment in voluntary control of movement below the injury. For decades, axonal regeneration and reconnection have been considered the opitome of spinal cord injury repair with the goal being the repair of the damaged long motor and sensory tracts in a complex process that involves:(1) resealing injured axons;(2) reconstructing the cytoskeletal structure inside axons;(3) re-establishing healthy growth cones;and(4) assembling axonal cargos. These biological processes require an efficient production of adenosine triphosphate, which is affected by mitochondrial dysfunction after spinal cord injury. From a pathological standpoint, during the secondary stage of spinal cord injury, mitochondrial homeostasis is disrupted, mainly in the distal segments of severed axons. This result in a reduction of adenosine triphosphate levels and subsequent inactivation of adenosine triphosphate-dependent ion pumps required for the regulation of ion concentrations and reuptake of neurotransmitters, such as glutamate. The consequences are calcium overload, reactive oxygen species formation, and excitotoxicity. These events are intimately related to the activation of necrotic and apoptotic cell death programs, and further exacerbate the secondary stage of the injury, being a hallmark of spinal cord injury. This is why restoring mitochondrial function during the early stage of secondary injury could represent a potentially effective therapeutic intervention to overcome the motor and sensory failure produced by spinal cord injury. Although forests play important roles in the hydrological cycle,there is little information that relates the water retention capacity of litter in areas under passive restoration,especially in Cerrado *** study relates litter levels to water holding capacity and effective water retention among forest fragments under different passive restoration stages:46,11,and 8 years to better understand litter hydrological functions in the *** retention capacity and effective water retention capacity of litters(unstructured materials,branches and leaves)in the field were monitored on a monthly *** litter accumulation at 46 years was significantly higher than that of the other succession *** litter mass was significantly higher than that of leaves and *** 46-year stage had the highest water holding capacity in the leaf fraction,followed by unstructured material and *** the water holding capacity was lower in the oldest resto-ration,this site showed the highest efficiency under field *** process was quickly reestablished,as the 11-year restoration showed results closer to that for the 46-year stage in comparison to the area at 8 ***,passive restoration plays a key role in soil water mainte-nance due to the influence of litter in Cerrado *** and the imminent need of restoring degraded sites,highlight the need for further studies focused on bet-ter understanding of the process of forest restoration and its temporal effect on soil water recovery dynamics.

This investigation aimed to establish the geographical traceability of Malaysian rice by assessing the elemental composition in paddy ***-element determination in combination with a chemometric approach was applied to evaluate the elemental concentrations of paddy soil from granaries cultivated with the same rice variety and to assess the relationship between elements in the soil and rice(SAR) system.A total of 29 elements(aluminum,arsenic,barium,bromine,calcium,chlorine,cobalt,chromium,cesium,europium,iron,gallium,hafnium,potassium,lanthanum,lutetium,magnesium,manganese,sodium,rubidium,antimony,scandium,samarium,thorium,titanium,uranium,vanadium,ytterbium and zinc) were successfully determined in paddy soil from Kedah,Selangor and Langkawi by neutron activation analysis.A significant difference(P < 0.05) between 18 elements in the soil samples was *** chemometric approaches of principal component and linear discriminant analyses demonstrated clear discrimination and highly corrected classification(100%) of the soil samples.A high classification(98.1%) was also achieved by assessing 10 elements(aluminum,arsenic,bromine,chlorine,potassium,magnesium,manganese,sodium,rubidium and zinc),which similarly applied to rice geographical origin *** elements in SAR were also observed for differences in the pattern of correlation and bioaccumulation factor between the ***,the generalized Procrustes analysis showed a 98% consensus between SAR and clear differences between the studied *** canonical correlation analysis demonstrated a significant correlation between the chemical profile of SAR(r~2 = 0.88,P < 0.001).Therefore,the current work model provides a reliable assessment to establish rice provenance.

AIM: To study the mechanism of cytotoxicity of a new active 5-alkyl resorcinol [1, 3-dihydroxy-5- (tridec-4’, 7’ -dienyl) benzene] isolated from Lithraea molleoides leaves on liver tumor cells. METHODS: Human hepatocarcinoma cell lines (HepG2 and Hep3B) in culture were treated with inhibitory concentrations, 50% of the compound, for 24 h. The induction of apoptosis was detected in treated cells by analysis of DNA fragmentation, DNA content, and acridine orange and propidium iodide staining. RESULTS: After 24 h of 5-alkyl resorcinol treatment, both cell lines showed: (1) the typical morphological alterations of apoptosis; (2) DNA fragmentation, detected by laddering and appearance of a subG0 population by flow cytometry; and (3) condensed and fragmented nuclei by acridine orange-propidium iodide staining. CONCLUSION: Based on the results, this compound exerts its cytotoxic effect in both hepatocellular cell lines through apoptotic cell death. For Hep3B, cells with mutated p53 and Fas, apoptosis would proceed by p53- or Fas-independent pathways.
