The sizes of Astyanax mexicanus blind cavefish populations of North-East Mexico are demographic parameters of great importance for investigating a variety of ecological,evolutionary,and conservation ***,few estimates have been *** these mobile animals living in an environment difficult to explore as a whole,methods based on capture-mark-recapture are appropriate,but their feasibility and interpretation of results depend on several assumptions that must be carefully ***,we provide evidence that minimally invasive genetic identification from captures at different time intervals(three days and three years)can give insights into cavefish population size dynamics as well as other important demographic parameters of *** also provide tools to calibrate sampling and genotyping efforts necessary to reach a given level of *** results suggest that the El Pachón cave population is currently very small,of an order of magnitude of a few hundreds of individuals,and is distributed in a relatively isolated *** probable decline in population size in the El Pachón cave since the last census in 1971 raises serious conservation issues.

Linear synchronization and circuit implementation of chaotic system with complete amplitude control

Although chaotic signals are considered to have great potential applications in radar and communication engineering, their broadband spectrum makes it difficult to design an applicable amplifier or an attenuator for amplitude conditioning. Moreover, the transformation between a unipolar signal and a bipolar signal is often required. In this paper, a more intelligent hardware implementation based on field programmable analog array （FPAA） is constructed for chaotic systems with complete amplitude control. Firstly, two chaotic systems with complete amplitude control are introduced, one of which has the property of offset boosting with total amplitude control, while the other has offset boosting and a parameter for partial control. Both cases can achieve complete amplitude control including amplitude rescaling and offset boosting. Secondly, linear synchronization is established based on the special structure of chaotic system. Finally, experimental circuits are constructed on an FPAA where the predicted amplitude control is realized through only two independent configurable analog module （CAM） gain values.

Mixed-species aggregations in arthropods

This review offers the first synthesis of the research on mixed-species groupings of arthropods and highlights the behavioral and evolutionary questions raised by such ***-species groups are commonly found in mammals and *** groups are also observed in a large range of arthropod taxa independent of their level of sociality. Several examples are presented to highlight the mechanisms underlying such groupings, particularly the evidence for phylogenetie proximity between members that promotes cross-species *** advantages offered by such aggregates are described and *** advantages can be attributed to the increase in group size and could be identical to those of nonmixed groupings,but competition-cooperation dynamics might also be involved,and such effects may differ between homo-and heterospecific *** discuss three extreme cases of interspecific recognition that are likely involved in mixed-species groups as vectors for cross-species aggregation:tolerance behavior between two social species,one-way mechanism in which one species is attractive to others and two-way mechanism of mutual *** shown in this review,the study of mixed-species groups offers biologists an interesting way to explore the frontiers of cooperation-competition, including the process of sympatric speciation.

Cobalt,a reactive metal in releasing hydrogen from sodium borohydride by hydrolysis:A short review and a research perspective

Cobalt is commonly admitted as being a promising catalyst in accelerating NaBH4 hydrolysis,being as reactive as noble metals and much more *** is the topic of the present ***,we survey(i) the NaBH4-devoted literature while especially focusing on the Co catalysts and(ii) our work on the same ***,we report(iii) reactivity results of newly developed Co-based *** both surveys,it mainly stands out that Co has been investigated as catalysts in various forms:namely,as chlorides,reduced nanoparticles(metal Co,Co boride,Co-B alloy),supported over supports and *** doing so the reactivity can be easily varied achieving H2 generation rates from few to >1000 L(H2)/min·g(metal).Nevertheless,our work can be distinguished from the NaBH4 ***,we are working on strategies that focus on making alternative Co-based *** of these strategies is illustrated here as we report new reactivity data of Co-based bimetallic supported *** example,we show that 20 wt% Co90Y10/γAl2O3-20 wt% Co95Hf5/γAl2O3 > 20 wt% Co99Zr1/γAl2O3 > 20 wt% Co/γAl2O3,the best catalysts showing HGRs of about 245 mL(H2)/min or 123 L(H2) /min·g(metals).

Chloramination of wastewater effluent: Toxicity and formation of disinfection byproducts

The reclamation and disinfection of waters impacted by human activities（e.g., wastewater effluent discharges） are of growing interest for various applications but has been associated with the formation of toxic nitrogenous disinfection byproducts（N-DBPs）. Monochloramine used as an alternative disinfectant to chlorine can be an additional source of nitrogen in the formation of N-DBPs. Individual toxicity assays have been performed on many DBPs, but few studies have been conducted with complex mixtures such as wastewater effluents. In this work, we compared the cytotoxicity and genotoxicity of wastewater effluent organic matter（Ef OM） before and after chloramination. The toxicity of chloraminated Ef OM was significantly higher than the toxicity of raw Ef OM, and the more hydrophobic fraction（HPO）isolated on XAD-8 resin was more toxic than the fraction isolated on XAD-4 *** DBPs were also isolated on the XAD-8 resin. N-DBPs（i.e., haloacetonitriles or haloacetamides） were responsible for the majority of the cytotoxicity estimated from DBP concentrations measured in the XAD-8 and XAD-4 fractions（99.4% and 78.5%, respectively）.Measured DBPs accounted for minor proportions of total brominated and chlorinated products, which means that many unknown halogenated compounds were formed and can be responsible for a significant part of the toxicity. Other non-halogenated byproducts（e.g.,nitrosamines） may contribute to the toxicity of chloraminated effluents as well.

Systemic chemotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma in non-cirrhotic liver:A retrospective study

AIM:To investigate the efficacy and toxicity of systemic chemotherapy in a retrospective study of patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)occurring in normal or fibrotic liver without cirrhosis. METHODS:Twenty-four patients with metastatic or locally advanced HCC in a normal or a fibrotic liver were given systemic chemotherapy(epirubicin,cis- platin and 5-fluorouracil or epirubicin,cisplatin and capecitabine regimens).Tumor response,time to pro- gression,survival,and toxicity were evaluated. RESULTS:There were 7 women and 17 men,mean age 54±10 years;18 patients had a normal liver and 6 had a fibrotic liver(F1/F2 on biopsy).Mean tumor size was 14 cm,5 patients had portal vein thrombosis and 7 had *** received a median of 4 chemotherapy *** tolerance was good. There were 5 partial responses(objective response rate =22%),and tumor control rate was 52%.Second line surgical resection was possible in two *** survival was 11 mo,and 1-and 2-year overall survival rates were 50%±10%and 32%±11%,respectively. CONCLUSION:In patients with HCC in a non-cirrhotic liver,chemotherapy was well tolerated and associated with an objective response rate of 22%,including two patients who underwent secondary surgical resection.

Sexual selection is considered the major cause of sexual dimorphism, but recent observations suggest that natural selection may play a more important role in the evolution of sex differentiation than previously recognized. Therefore, studying the trade-offs between natural selection and sexual selection is crucial to a better understanding of the ecology underlying the evolution of sexual dimorphism. The freshwater blenny Salaria fluviatilis, a fish inhabiting lakes and rivers around the Mediterranean Sea, displays strong sexual dimorphism in size, shape, and behavior （i.e., larger body and head size for males and higher swimming requirements for females during the reproductive period）. We tested for differences in sexual dimorphism in size and shape between the populations from lake and river habitats with the goal of identifying the trade-offs between natural and sexual se- lection that underlie variations in sexual dimorphism in this species. Our results show i） differences in sexual size dimorphism （SSizeD） in accordance to Rensch＇s rule （i.e., larger individuals in rivers associated with higher SSizeD）, and ii） a decrease in shape differentiation between males and fe- males in lake populations. Together, this suggests that the different environmental conditions between lake and river habitats （e.g., resource limitations, predation pressure, water velocity） affect the relative importance of sexual selection in the display of sexual dimorphism within the species. This study highlights the importance of considering the environmental conditions to which populations are exposed to better understand the ecology underlying the evolution of sexual dimorphism.

Synthesis of cleavable multi-functional mikto-arm star polymer by RAFT polymerization: example of an anti-cancer drug 7-ethyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin(SN-38) as functional moiety

Multi-functional mikto-arm star polymers containing three different arms [hydrophilic, SN-38-P（OEGMAs_9）11, cationizable, SN-38-P（DMAEMA）3s and hydrophobic, SN-38-P（BMA）26] were prepared by RAFT polymerization via an arm-first approach using a cleavable cross-linker. The star polymers were cleaved to the linear arms with tributylphosphine as a reducing agent. The decrease in molecular weight observed is consistent with the initial stars having approximately five arms, Blue fluorescence was observed when a solution of mikto-arm star was irradiated under a 365 nm light proving the retention of the SN-38 moiety during star formation by RAFT polymerization. Thus these polymer-drug conjugates can be considered as potential delivery vehicles for cancer therapy. The P（DMAEMA） arms can be quaternized using iodomethane, allowing star polymers to bind negatively charged small interfering RNA （siRNA） and potentially be used as a carrier for that material.

Colorectal cancer and immunity:what we know and perspectives

Strong evidence supports the concept of immunosurveillance and immunoediting in colorectal cancer. In particular, the density of T CD8+ and CD45+ lymphocyte infiltration was recently shown to have a better prognostic value than the classic tumor node metastasis classification factor. Other immune subsets, as macrophages, natural killer cells or unconventionnal lymphocytes, seem to play an important role. Induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs) or immunosuppressive molecules such as PD-1 or CTLA-4 and downregulation of antigen-presenting molecules are major escape mechanisms to antitumor immune response. The development of these mechanisms is a major obstacle to the establishment of an effective immune response, but also to the use of immunotherapy. Although immunotherapy is not yet routinely used in colorectal cancer, we now know that most treatments used (chemotherapy and biotherapy) have immunomodulatory effects, such as induction of immunogenic cell death by chemotherapy, inhibition of immunosuppression by antiangiogenic agents, and antibody-dependent cytotoxicity induced by cetuximab. Finally, many immunotherapy strategies are being developed and tested in phase I to III clinical trials. The most promising strategies are boosting the immune system with cytokines, inhibition of immunoregulatory checkpoints, vaccination with vectorized antigens, and adoptive cell therapy. Comprehension of antitumor immune response and combination of the different approaches of immunotherapy may allow the use of effective immunotherapy for treatment of colorectal cancer in the near future.

In the present work,selective laser melting(SLM)technology was utilized for manufacturing CX stainless steel samples under a series of laser *** effect of laser linear energy density on the microstructure characteristics,phase distribution,crystallographic orientation and mechanical properties of these CX stainless steel samples were investigated theoretically and experimentally via scanning electron microscope(SEM),X-ray diffraction(XRD),electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD)and transmission electron microscope(TEM).Based on the systematic study,the SLM CX stainless steel sample with best surface roughness(Ra=4.05±1.8μm)and relative density(Rd=99.72%±0.22%)under the optimal linear density(η=245 J/m)can be *** CX stainless steel was primarily constituted by a large number of fine martensite(α’phase)structures(i.e.,cell structures,cellular dendrites and blocky grains)and a small quantity of austenite(γphase)*** pre ferred crystallographic orientation(i.e.,direction)can be determined in the XZ plane of the SLM CX ***,under the optimal linear energy density,the good combinations with the highest ultimate tensile strength(UTS=1068.0%±5.9%)and the best total elongation(TE=15.70%±0.26%)of the SLM CX sample can be *** strengthening dominates the strengthening mechanism of the SLM CX sample in as-built state.
