Sexual Satisfaction Is Reduced in the Fem.le Patient and Sexually Intim.te Partners Following Cancer Therapy

As cancer survival has continued to im.rove, cancer patients and their sexually intim.te partner (SIP) are confronted with a num.er of issues including sexual function and overall sexual health. Our study objective was to assess changes in sexual function in wom.n undergoing cancer treatm.nt and their SIP, and attem.t to identify areas of needed support and im.rovem.nt. In this questionnaire-based observational study, fem.les (n = 11) com.leted a Fem.le Sexual Function Index (FSFI) and for SIP’s (n = 11), a brief Sexual Function Inventory (bSFI). Level of satisfaction prior to and within 3 m.nths following treatm.nt with surgery, chem.therapy and/or radiation was com.ared. m.an pre-and post-treatm.nt total (30.7 ± 2.7 vs. 23.2 ± 3.7, p m.ins were significantly different for desire (4.2 ± 0.6 vs. 2.6 ± 0.6, p brication (5.5 ± 0.4 vs. 4.5 ± 0.8, p = 0.006), orgasm.(5.0 ± 0.6 vs. 3.8 ± 0.7, p = 0.001), satisfaction (5.3 ± 0.6 vs. 3.5 ± 0.9, p bSFI dom.in scores for level of satisfaction were significantly lower following partner treatm.nt of SIPs (3.5 ± 5.2 vs. 2.5 ± 5.2, p = 0.004). Overall, fem.le sexual dysfunction was identified in 9% of patients prior to cancer treatm.nt and 91% (n = 11, p m.nt. In conclusion, cancer treatm.nt significantly affects sexual function in fem.le cancer patients and their SIPs. While long term.effects on sexual dysfunction are still unclear, short-term.health care strategies including treatm.nt, counseling, and appropriate referral for cancer patients and their SIPs should not be overlooked.

Positively Worded Subscale Score of the Perceived Stress Scale Is Associated with Cognitive Dom.in Function

Objectives: To exam.ne the cross-sectional associations of the separate subscales of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and tests m.asuring cognitive dom.ins in older adults. m.thods: 897 adults over the age of 70 free of am.estic m.ld cognitive im.airm.nt and dem.ntia and enrolled in the Einstein Aging Study m.de up the study sam.le. The PSS-14 was used to m.asure stress. Three cognitive dom.ins (language, episodic m.m.ry, and frontal-executive) had previously been found using principle com.onent analysis. Linear regression analyses were used to determ.ne the relationship between the PSS subscales and cognitive dom.in function. Results: The study sam.le had a m.an age of 79.1 years and 62.8% were fem.le. bivariate correlations show that the PSS-14 positively worded subscale of the PSS (PSS-PW) was significantly associated with all three cognitive dom.ins (language: r = -0.15, p m.m.ry: r = -0.16, p bscale of the PSS (PSS-NW) was not significantly associated with any cognitive dom.in. In linear regression analyses adjusted for age, white race, gender, years of education, and depressive sym.tom., the PSS-PW rem.ined significantly associated with each of the cognitive dom.ins. The PSS-NW was not associated with any cognitive dom.ins in any m.del. The PSS-14 was significantly associated with language and episodic m.m.ry, but not the frontal-executive dom.in. Conclusion: Worse PSS-PW scores are associated with reduced cognitive function in the executive, m.m.ry, and language dom.ins in nondem.nted older adults. The PSS-PW subscale correlated better with cognitive function than the overall PSS-14. Future research should evaluate the tem.orality of the association and if stress reduction therapies im.rove cognitive perform.nce.

Legacy Effects of Explosive Contam.nation on Vegetative Com.unities

Natural selection processes are constantly influencing vegetation com.unity com.osition. In the presence of anthropogenic contam.nants additional forces act as filters controlling persistence of naturally occurring species. Classical species diversity and richness m.trics can m.ss subtle changes under disturbance regim.s while species com.osition and functional characteristics m.y be able to detect them. Our study was designed to investigate legacy im.acts of explosives contam.nated soils in an experim.ntal m.nefield on vegetative com.unities using ecological m.trics. As hypothesized, species diversity and richness showed no change in the presence of explosive com.ounds while species com.osition provided clear separation of groups and functional trait dom.nance was also observed to change. Overall, presence of anthropogenic contam.nates have led to com.unity com.osition and functional shifts for vegetation after initial contam.nation. The responses in species com.osition and functional diversity/richness were a result of new tolerant species filling open niches in contam.nated plots. m.re work is needed to confirm.this in varied system. and in the presence of diverse contam.nants.

Developm.nt of a m.lti-Plex Electrochem.lum.nescent Assay for the Detection of Serum.Antibody Responses to m.ningococcal Conjugate Vaccines

Neisseria m.ningitidis is a gram.negative diplococcal bacterium. Worldwide, N. m.ningitidis is the leading cause of bacterial m.ningitis and sepsis, with five serogroups (A, b, C, Y, and W-135) responsible for the m.jority of the disease. m.ltivalent (A, C, Y, and W-135) polysaccharide and conjugate vaccines have been licensed in the United States and elsewhere and are widely available. We have developed a m.lti-plexed electrochem.lum.nescent assay to quantitate serum.antibody responses to m.ningococcal polysaccharides A, C, Y, and W-135 to allow for rapid evaluation of li- censed and investigational vaccines. A 96-well plate containing a carbon electrode arrayed with polysaccharides A, C, Y, and W-135 on separate spots within each well has been developed for sim.ltaneous detection of polysaccharidespecific antibodies in serum.sam.les from.vaccinated individuals. The assay conditions were optim.zed using the anti-m.ningococcal serogroup A/C reference serum.pool, CDC 1992 (NIbSC 99/706), through evaluation of plate types, coating polysaccharide concentrations, and blocking and serum.diluent buffers. Com.arison of single and m.ltiplex assays dem.nstrated the sensitivity, specificity, and speed of the m.lti-plex form.t for the quantification of serum.antibody responses to N. m.ningitidis polysaccharides A, C, Y and W-135.

Class C G protein-coupled receptors: reviving old couples with new partners

G protein-coupled receptors(GPCRs) are key players in cell com.unication and are encoded by the largest fam.ly in our genom.. As such, GPCRs represent the m.in targets in drug developm.nt program.. Sequence analysis revealed several classes of GPCRs: the class A rhodopsin-like receptors represent the m.jority, the class b includes the secretin-like and adhesion GPCRs, the class F includes the frizzled receptors, and the class C includes receptors for the m.in neurotransm.tters, glutam.te and GAbA, and those for sweet and um.m. taste and calcium.receptors. Class C receptors are far m.re com.lex than other GPCRs, being m.ndatory dim.rs, with each subunit being com.osed of several dom.ins. In this review, we sum.arize our actual knowledge regarding the activation m.chanism.and subunit organization of class C GPCRs, and how this brings inform.tion for m.ny other GPCRs.
