Sediment Yield dynamics during the 1950s Multi-Year droughts from Two Ungauged Basins in the Edwards Plateau, Texas

Sediment yield dynamics on the Edwards Plateau region of Texas was dramatically influenced by a multi-year drought that occurred there during the 1950s. To assess the effect of this drought on sediment yield, we used the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to identify the factors that contributed erosion and to propose potential mitigation measures in case of future drought recurrence. The basins of interest to this study were Brady Creek One (BC 1) and deep Creek Three (dC 3), located in McCulloch County, Texas. Although the streams in these basins are not gauged, the land cover and reservoir sediment budgets have been assessed in a past study. Calibration of SWAT flow simulation was accomplished using parameter transfer from a gauging station located in San saba River. The results showed that sediment yield from storms above 60 mm was five times more during and immediately after drought period than during continuous wet seasons. Approximately half of the total drought period sediment yield was from five major rainstorms. The multi-year drought coupled with historical high grazing intensity resulted in significant loss of plant cover, which was considered critical in determining erosion and sedimentation rates. To test this hypothesis, the model was run for the periods of high land cover (1990s) using the 1950s multi-year drought data which showed that sediment yield was 24% of that simulated for 1950s land cover. It was concluded that maintenance of surface cover could play a critical role associated with multi-year drought extreme events.

Pedunculated colonic lipoma prolapsing through the anus

Colorectal lipomas are the second most common benign tumors of the colon. These masses are typically incidental findings with over 94% being asymptomatic. Symptoms-classically abdominal pain, bleeding per rectum and alterations in bowel habits-may arise when lipomas become larger than 2 cm in size. Colonic lipomas are most often noted incidentally by colonoscopy. They may also be identified by abdominal imaging such as computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. We report a case of a sixty-one years old male who presented to our emergency room with a 6.7 cm × 6.3 cm soft tissue mucosal mass protruding transanally. The patient was stable with a benign abdominal examination. The mass was initially thought to be a rectal prolapse; however, a limited digital rectal exam was able to identify this as distinct from the anal canal. Since the mass was irreducible, it was elected to be resected under anesthesia. At surgery, manipulation of the mass identified that the lesion was pedunculated with a long and thickened stalk. A laparoscopic linear cutting stapler was used to resect the mass at its stalk. Pathology showed a polypoid submucosal lipoma of the colon with overlying ulceration and necrosis. We report this case to highlight this rare but possible presentation of colonic lipomas; an incarcerated, trans-anal mass with features suggesting rectal prolapse. Trans-anal resection is simple and effective treatment.

Background: dysphagia is a common side effect following chemoradiation(CRT) in patients with head and neck cancer(HNC).The purpose of this pilot trial was to assess the feasibility of recruiting HNC patients and to collect preliminary data on the efficacy and safety of acupuncture on dysphagia-related quality of life(QOL).Methods: Patients were eligible if diagnosed with stage IIIIV HNC, without evidence of distance metastasis, receiving curative-intent *** were randomized to 12 sessions of either active or sham acupuncture, once every two weeks, over 24 weeks from during CRT to 20-week *** study personnel and the patients were blinded, while the treating acupuncturists were *** and other questionnaires were measured at baseline(end of CRT), end of acupuncture, and at six months follow-up(12-month post-CRT).data were analyzed by repeated-measures ANOVA adjusting for ***: Accrual was completed in december *** 42 patients enrolled, 35(83%) received at least 8 sessions of acupuncture, and 28(67%) received all *** patients withdrew due to time *** serious side effects were *** mean MdAdI total scores improved from baseline in both treatment arms(64.5(SE±2.4) vs.71.4(SE±3.1), P=0.048; 64.5(SE±2.4) vs.77.8(SE±3.0), Pdifference in improvement was not significant(P=0.12).The median feeding tube duration did not differ between active and sham treatments(n=39, median 125 d vs.147 d, P=0.93).Conclusion: Acupuncture is a safe and feasible treatment for HNC *** the pilot trial, improvements in QOL parameters from end of CRT to the time points examined were observed but they did not differ between the two *** of acupuncture to improve swallowing-related QOL in HNC patients may require more frequent or longer duration of treatment.

Human life intimately depends on plants for food,biomaterials,health,energy,and a sustainable *** plants have been genetically improved mostly through breeding,along with limited modification via genetic engineering,yet they are still not able to meet the ever-increasing needs,in terms of both quantity and quality,resulting from the rapid increase in world population and expected standards of living.A step change that may address these challenges would be to expand the potential of plants using biosystems design *** represents a shift in plant science research from relatively simple trial-and-error approaches to innovative strategies based on predictive models of biological *** biosystems design seeks to accelerate plant genetic improvement using genome editing and genetic circuit engineering or create novel plant systems through de novo synthesis of plant *** this perspective,we present a comprehensive roadmap of plant biosystems design covering theories,principles,and technical methods,along with potential applications in basic and applied plant biology *** highlight current challenges,future opportunities,and research priorities,along with a framework for international collaboration,towards rapid advancement of this emerging interdisciplinary area of ***,we discuss the importance of social responsibility in utilizing plant biosystems design and suggest strategies for improving public perception,trust,and acceptance.

Background: To review the diagnosis and management of seven cases of Actinomyc es canaliculitis. Methods: Culture of dischargewas performed in six of seven pat ients with Actinomyces canaliculitis using a Pd Plus/F blood culture bottle. All patients were treated by canaliculotomy with curettage of dacryoliths, followed by treatment with systemic penicillin and Sulphacetamide drops over a period of 3-6 months. Part of the curetted concretions was fixed on a glass slide and pa rt was sent to the laboratory for culture. Results: Four patients were women and three men with age ranging between 43 and 90 years. The average time lapse betw een onset of symptoms until diagnosis was 3 years. All cases presented with epip hora, chronic conjunctivitis, palpably thickened canaliculus, and yellow punctal discharge. diagnosis was achieved by culture of discharge in three of six cases , culture of concretions in three of five cases, and staining of dacryoliths in all seven cases. Follow-up ranged between 12 and 48 months. The canaliculitis r esolved completely and all patients have patent canalicula. Conclusions: Actinom yces canaliculitis presents with epiphora, chronic purulent conjunctivitis, a pa lpably thickened canaliculus, and yellow punctual discharge. In suspect cases ca nuliculotomy and curettage should be performed, although canalicular reconstruct ion is generally unnecessary. Culture of discharge and concretions using Pd Plus /F blood culture medium gave improved results over accepted norms. Fixation of s meared concretions on a slide in alcohol is simple and is diagnostic of the dise ase. We recommend long-term systemic penicillin treatment in Actinomyces canali culitis.

To assess whether elevated levels of estriol (E3)inpregnancy are a factor in the fetal environment associated with undescended testes, we carried out a two-part study: case-control followed by a retrospective cohort study on cryptorchid boys born in the Sapir Medical Center (Kfar saba, Israel). We found significantly lower pregnancy urinary E3 levels in cryptorchid newborns as compared to controls; however, subgroup comparison yielded significantly higher pregnancy unconjugated E3 levels in the infants who underwent orchiopexy as compared to those who did not.
