Single-center study comparing computed tomography colonography with conventional colonoscopy

AIM:To compare the results from computed tomography (CT) colonography with conventional colonoscopy in symptomatic patients referred for colonoscopy. METHODS: The study included 227 adult outpatients, mean age 60 years, with appropriate indications for colonoscopy. CT colonography and colonoscopy were performed on the same day in a metropolitan teaching hospital. Colonoscopists were initially blinded to the results of CT colonography but there was segmental unblinding during the procedure. The primary outcome measures were the sensitivity and specificity of CT colonography for the identification of polyps seen at colonoscopy (i.e. analysis by polyp). Secondary outcome measures included an analysis by patient, extracolonic findings at CT colonography, adverse events with both procedures and patient acceptance and preference. rESULTS: Twenty-five patients (11%) were excluded from the analysis because of incomplete colonoscopy or poor bowel preparation that affected either CT colonography, colonoscopy or both procedures. Polyps and masses (usually cancers) were detected at colonoscopy and CT colonography in 35% and 42% of patients, respectively. Of nine patients with a finaldiagnosis of cancer, eight (89%) were identified by CT colonography as masses (5) or polyps (3). For polyps analyzed according to polyp, the overall sensitivity of CT colonography was 50% (95% CI, 39%-61%) but this increased to 71% (95% CI, 52%-85%) for polyps ≥ 6 mm in size. Similarly, specificity for all polyps was 48% (95% CI, 39%-58%) increasing to 67% (95% CI, 56%-76%) for polyps ≥ 6 mm. Adverse events were uncommon but included one colonic perforation at colonoscopy. Patient acceptance was high for both procedures but preference favoured CT colonography. CONCLUSION: Although CT colonography was more sensitive in this study than in some previous studies, the procedure is not yet sensitive enough for widespread application in symptomatic patients.

Objective:To detect some common microbial agents of vaginal discharge and improve the current syndromic management of abnormal vaginal ***:A prospective study of female genital swabs collected from obstetrics and gynecology units of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital,Kano,Nigeria and an analysed of microscopy,culture and sensitivity in the medical microbiology and parasitology laboratory of this hospital were conducted from December 2007 to December *** on epidemiologic indices were collected from the patients,using structured interviewer-administered ***:Eight hundred and forty Candida species were detected,constituting 60%(n=840) of 1 400 female genital discharge samples of microbial etiology in a total of 2 000 female genital samples *** distribution of vaginal candidiasis was tbe highest in young adults aged 21 to 30 years with 43%(n=360) of the total 840 cases. Pregnant women that presented with vaginal candidiasis constituted 40%(n=360) of the total 840 *** risk groups included the immuno-suppression with 24%(n=202),group on hormonal therapy with 15%(n=126) and broad spectrum antibiotics users with 16%(n=134).Conclusions: The results show that Candida is the most common cause of vaginitis and vulvo-vaginal candidiasis followed by *** in the young adults aged 21 to 30 years,pregnant mothers, immuno-suppression,contraceptive and broad spectrum antibiotic *** management of vaginal candidiasis and vulvo-vaginal candidiasis is recommended especially among the risk groups in order to avoid complications and reduce HIV transmission.

European and North American research,however,shows that trial results are rarely shared with participants. Given the increase in industry-sponsored trials in China,we conducted the first investigation into Chinese consumer views about sharing the clinical trial results with participants.

Objective:To investigate the prevalence of pathogens of abnormal vaginal discharges and to improve the current syndromic management of abnormal vaginal ***:A prospective study of pathogens of abnormal vaginal discharge was carried out from December 2007 to December *** of female genital swabs were collected from Obstetrics and Gynecology Units of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital,Kano,Nigeria,and analyzed by microscopy,culture and sensitivity test in Medical Microbiology Laboratory of Aminu Kano Teaching ***:Microorganisms were detected in 70%(1 400) of a total 2 000 female genital swabs *** species peaked with 42.0%(840),followed by Gardnerella vaginalis,a pathogen of bacteria vaginosis with 26.0%.The distribution of abnormal vaginal discharge was highest in young adults aged from 21 to 30 ***:The commonest Microorganisms of infective vaginal discharge were Candida species,followed by Gardnerella vaginalis,a pathogen of bacterial *** discharge was prevalent among young adults. We recommend prevention,early diagnosis and prompt treatment of infected female,especially among the young,sexually active group in order to reduce the menace of HIV transmission.

Phacoemulsification is the main gold standard for cataract operation in the developed world together with foldable intraocular lens(IOL) implantation by injection,allowing for stable wound construction and less postoperative astigmatism. It is a safe procedure with high success rate with the advancement in machines,improvement of IOL injection systems and further maturation of surgeons’ techniques. Despite the large number of operations performed every day, foldable IOL injection leading to an intra-stromal corneal track is a very rare complication. We report a case of this unusual finding in a 70-year-old gentleman who has undergone cataract operation in November 2011 in our hospital and will review on the complications related to foldable IOL injection.

High early strength(HES)concrete pavements are commonly opened to traffic within the first 24 h after construction,making early-opening decisions critical for pavement quality and traffic ***,most state departments of transportation rely on compressive strength testing for early-opening decision ***,there laboratory tests are labor intensive,costly and not always representative of field strength *** this study,non-destructive testing(maturity and ultrasonic tomography)was explored for faster and reliable in-situ strength *** experimental section constructed using HES concrete was routinely monitored using compressive testing,maturity,and ultrasonic tomography in the first 24 h after *** shear wave velocity,measured using ultrasonic tomography,was able to capture the strength-gain variability within a single slab and between different slabs due to the ability to monitor several locations in a short period of *** results were consistently conservative in the first 24 h of *** show that both maturity testing and ultrasonic tomography are able to replace or add to conventional strength testing for HES concrete pavements to facilitate making the opening decision within the first 24 *** tomography proved more beneficial as a result of the device's portability,increased speed of testing,and accurate estimations of HES concrete strength for the entire pavement length.

Neurodegeneration is one of the biggest public health problems in modern society. Age-associated neurodegeneration, which is accelerated several-fold in Alzheimer＇s disease （AD） alone, is not only an enormous social and economic burden to the affected in- dividuals and their families, but is also a great scientific challenge. Currently 25-35 million people worldwide suffer from AD, the single largest cause of dementia in middle- to old-aged individuals. These numbers are projected to triple by 2050 if no treatment to prevent or reverse AD is developed.

Objective:To determine the prevalence of bacterial vaginosis in the HIV/AIDS patients of primary health care clinics in Jos Plateau state,***:Female genital swabs were collected from primary health care centers,Jos and analyzed by microscopy,culture,*** Jos University Teaching Hospital from December 2006 to December *** on epidemiologic indices were collected,using structured interviewer-administered ***: The incidence of bacterial vaginosis in the study was 28%(n=196/700).Among the HIV/AIDS group,the bacterial vaginosis incidence was 36%(n=126/350),while in the control(non-HIV patients) group,the rate was 20%(70/350) with a statistically significant difference at 95 percent confidence level(Prol) patients contributed 64%(n=126/196) and 36%(n=70/196),*** risks to bacterial vaginosis included vaginal douching with disinfectant/detergent constituted(60%),poor use of condom 40%,a median age of 26 years,and a median number of 3 sex partners per ***:There was a significant statistical difference in prevalence of bacterial vaginosis between the HIV/AIDS group and non-HIV(control) group of patients in the *** behaviors that promote the incidence of bacterial vaginosis should be especially paid attention.
