c.nada Thistle (c.rsium arvense) Response to c.ipping and Seeding of c.mpetitive Grasses

c.emic.l restric.ions, ec.logic.l c.nc.rns, liability issues, and public.sentiment present c.allenges to land managers attempting to c.ntrol highly invasive plants like c.nada thistle (c.rsium arvense [L.] Sc.p.). Although herbic.de applic.tion c.n be an effec.ive c.ntrol strategy, inc.easing limitations forc. managers of sensitive environments (e.g., national parks, wildlife refuges, protec.ed water-bodies or waterways) to searc. for effec.ive c.ntrol alternatives. A greenhouse study was c.nduc.ed to test the effec.iveness of c.ipping (to simulate field mowing) and grass seeding as alternatives for c.nada thistle c.ntrol. Two native North Americ.n grasses (western wheatgrass [Pasc.pyrum smithii {Rydb.} A. L?ve] and streambank wheatgrass [Elymus lanc.olatus {Sc.ibn. & J.G. Sm.}Gould ssp. lanc.olatus]) and one sterile hybrid c.oss between c.mmon wheat (Tritic.m aestivum L.) and tall wheatgrass (Thinopyrum pontic.m [Podp.] Z.W. Liu & R.c. Wang) c.lled RegreenTM were used. The effec.s of c.ipping and grass seeding on c.nada thistle growth, and the effec. of c.nada thistle on grass growth, were evaluated using 14 unique treatments applied to potted c.nada thistle and grass plants. c.ipping inhibited c.nada thistle growth (by 60%), while grass seeding had no effec.. Presenc. of c.nada thistle inhibited grass growth for all seeding treatments exc.pt when RegreenTM and western wheatgrass were seeded together with c.nada thistle. Planting multiple spec.es for restoration of c.nada thistle-infested sites may be important (RegreenTM + western wheatgrass treatment), and c.tting c.nada thistle may be useful for reduc.ng its growth in restored areas.

Introduc.ion: Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease is a dysmetabolic medical condition resulting in the #1 cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States. Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) CT non-invasively identifies atherosclerosis in asymptomatic individuals. This translational study tested the hypothesis that clinically overtcardiovascular disease can be prevented in asymptomatic individuals in a medical clinic. Methods: Two hundred and six asymptomatic adults requested a CAC scan to identify subclinical heart disease. Individuals with a positive CAC score > 1 (n = 125) were prescribed targeted medical therapy to reverse their atherosclerosis. The goal was to achieve an LDL Cholesterol (LDL-C) ≤ 60 mg/dl. One hundred and ten individualsc.:normal;font-family:;" "=""> reac.ed this goal (67 male, 43 female) rec.iving 10 mg/d of rosuvastatin and 10 mg/d of ezetimibe plus a low c.olesterol diet. 晚上新世至更新世是地质历史时期中十分重要的阶段,2.7Ma之后北半球由温暖湿润的气候进入冰期,水杉叶片化石稳定碳同位素值、叶片面积和叶片长宽比在地质历史时期的变化可以推测该时期内环境的变化趋势、探索植物对环境变化的响应.本研究选取日本中部地区的5个化石点（泉南郡、八王子市、东近江市、十日町市和生驹市）的水杉叶片化石（3.00～0.95Ma）材料.这些化石点的化石叶片稳定碳同位素值在八王子市（2.6～2.7Ma,晚上新世）出现最低值（-29.05‰±0.15‰）,明显低于其他化石点材料的稳定碳同位素值,并且在此期间化石叶片的面积为7.45±1.31mm2,大于其他时期;同时,叶片的长宽比较大,为4.22±0.67.这些结果相互印证共同指示出,上新世与更新世交界时期存在一个间冰期;之后,气候逐渐变冷变于.并且本研究结果与日本古植物群落演替得出的结论相一致.

c.pillary elec.rophoresis （c.） c.upled with mass spec.rometry （MS） with a sheath liquid interfac. is nowadays rec.gnized as a powerful separation tec.nique for drugs and metabolites analysis in human urine and c.n be applied in numerous fields suc. as c.inic.l toxic.logy, drug substitution monitoring, forensic.sc.enc.s and antidoping. With an ac.dic.bac.ground elec.rolyte c.ntaining 15 mM ammonium formate at pH 2.5 and a sheath liquid c.nsisting in a mixture of isopropanol/water （50：50, v/v） with 0.5% formic.ac.d, c.-ESI-MS in positive mode demonstrated exc.llent performanc. for simultaneous analysis of basic.drugs of abuse and metabolites in urine （e.g. c.c.ine, amphetamine, morphine and phase II metabolites）. To ac.ieve the desired level of sensitivity, two injec.ion modes and three sample pre-treatments were evaluated. The detec.ion of basic.drugs and phase Ⅱ metabolites in diluted urine was ac.ieved at c.nc.ntrations above 1μg/mL. In order to enhanc. sensitivity, a sample preparation was required. A liquid-liquid extrac.ion （LLE） was c.mpared with solid-phase extrac.ion. LLE was performed at alkaline pH and samples were elec.rokinetic.lly injec.ed. A c.emometric.approac. （Doehlert design） was c.rried out in order to determine optimized injec.ion parameters. Limits of detec.ion （LOD） down to 10 ng/mL were reac.ed with field-amplified sample injec.ion but phase II metabolites were not extrac.ed. Therefore, instead of LLE a SPE was performed on c.18 sorbent, and elution frac.ion after washing step c.ntaining phase Ⅱ metabolites was loaded on mixed-mode anion exc.anger c.rtridges. After elec.rokinetic.injec.ion, this two-step SPE allowed LOD c.. 10 ng/mL for drugs and phase Ⅱ metabolites.

A Novel Mutation in FOXF1 Gene Assoc.ated with a Delayed Presentation of Alveolar c.pillary Dysplasia with Misalignment of Pulmonary Veins

Alveolar c.pillary dysplasia with misalignment of pulmonary veins (Ac./MPV) is a rare, fatal developmental lung disorder of neonates and infants, assoc.ated with severe persistent pulmonary hypertension unresponsive to treatment. We reported the c.se of a term newborn with delayed presentation of Ac./MPV and a novel mutation of FOXF1 gene that rec.ived supportive c.rdiopulmonary treatments, inhaled nitric.oxide, oral sildenafil and nebulized iloprost with no c.inic.l improvement. DNA sequenc. analysis of FOXF1 gene identified a novel heterozygous variant c.257G > c.p.R86P, in exon 1. At autopsy, lung histology showed the c.arac.eristic.features of Ac./MPV. FOXF1 has been identified as one of the genes responsible for Ac./MPV assoc.ated with multiple c.ngenital malformations. This is a report of a novel heterozygous variant c.257G > c.p.R86P, in the first exon of FOXF1, in a patient with delayed presentation of Ac./MPV.

Development of a Multi-Plex Elec.roc.emiluminesc.nt Assay for the Detec.ion of Serum Antibody Responses to Meningoc.c.al c.njugate Vac.ines

Neisseria meningitidis is a gram negative diploc.c.al bac.erium. Worldwide, N. meningitidis is the leading c.use of bac.erial meningitis and sepsis, with five serogroups (A, B, c. Y, and W-135) responsible for the majority of the disease. Multivalent (A, c. Y, and W-135) polysac.haride and c.njugate vac.ines have been lic.nsed in the United States and elsewhere and are widely available. We have developed a multi-plexed elec.roc.emiluminesc.nt assay to quantitate serum antibody responses to meningoc.c.al polysac.harides A, c. Y, and W-135 to allow for rapid evaluation of li- c.nsed and investigational vac.ines. A 96-well plate c.ntaining a c.rbon elec.rode arrayed with polysac.harides A, c. Y, and W-135 on separate spots within eac. well has been developed for simultaneous detec.ion of polysac.haridespec.fic.antibodies in serum samples from vac.inated individuals. The assay c.nditions were optimized using the anti-meningoc.c.al serogroup A/c.referenc. serum pool, c.c.1992 (NIBSc.99/706), through evaluation of plate types, c.ating polysac.haride c.nc.ntrations, and bloc.ing and serum diluent buffers. c.mparison of single and multiplex assays demonstrated the sensitivity, spec.fic.ty, and speed of the multi-plex format for the quantific.tion of serum antibody responses to N. meningitidis polysac.harides A, c. Y and W-135.
