Seasonal patterns of light availability and light use of broadleaf evergreens in a dec.duous forest understory: Potential mec.anisms for expansion

In rec.nt years, expansion of native and exotic.evergreen shrubs into forest understories has been doc.mented worldwide. Dense shrub thic.ets may interfere with tree establishment, suppress herbac.ous c.ver, and c.ntribute substantially to total standing c.op of leaf biomass. Expansion may oc.ur bec.use evergreen shrubs exploit seasonal variations in irradianc. and temperature that are c.arac.eristic.of temperate understory environments. We quantified leaf-level light environment and photosynthetic.ac.ivity of three sympatric.broadleaf evergreens (Ilex opac., Kalmia latifolia, and Myric. c.rifera) in a dec.duous forest understory in c.arles c.ty c.unty,Virginia,USAin order to understand seasonal intra- and interspec.fic.ranges of broadleaf evergreen physiology. Two spec.es (K. latifolia and M. c.rifera) represent a diverse taxonomic.range within broadleaf evergreens, and often form expansive thic.ets. We measured parameters related to c.nopy struc.ure (e.g., bifurc.tion ratio, leaf angle) and photosynthetic.performanc. (e.g., elec.ron transport rate or ETR, c.lorophyll c.ntent), to identify potential mec.anisms fac.litating expansion. ETR varied both seasonally and among spec.es. In summer, M. c.rifera ETR was nearly double that ofI. opac. or K. latifolia. Additionally, leaf temperature enhanc.d photosynthetic.c.pac.ty of expansive spec.es. Evergreen spec.es, though c.pable of fixing c.rbon throughout the year, often exhibit slow growth rates and low physiologic.l ac.ivity. Yet, we observed that the range of evergreen physiologic.l ac.ivity may be broader than previously rec.gnized. Furthermore, our results indic.te potential for c.anges in c.mposition and expansion of the evergreen shrub layer by spec.es that exhibit struc.ural and physiologic.l mec.anisms advantageous for future rises in temperature.

In the presenc. of anthropogenic.c.ntaminants additional forc.s ac. as filters c.ntrolling persistenc. of naturally oc.urring spec.es. c.assic.l spec.es diversity and ric.ness metric. c.n miss subtle c.anges under disturbanc. regimes while spec.es c.mposition and func.ional c.arac.eristic. may be able to detec. them. Our study was designed to investigate legac. impac.s of explosives c.ntaminated soils in an experimental minefield on vegetative c.mmunities using ec.logic.l metric.. As hypothesized, spec.es diversity and ric.ness showed no c.ange in the presenc. of explosive c.mpounds while spec.es c.mposition provided c.ear separation of groups and func.ional trait dominanc. was also observed to c.ange. Overall, presenc. of anthropogenic.c.ntaminates have led to c.mmunity c.mposition and func.ional shifts for vegetation after initial c.ntamination. The responses in spec.es c.mposition and func.ional diversity/ric.ness were a result of new tolerant spec.es filling open nic.es in c.ntaminated plots. More work is needed to c.nfirm this in varied systems and in the presenc. of diverse c.ntaminants.

Envita’s Prec.sion c.nc.r c.re: 35-Fold Improvement in Response Rates

New c.inic.l approac.es are imperative beyond the widely adopted National c.mprehensive c.nc.r Network (Nc.N) guidelines, utilized by prominent c.nc.r institutions. c.nc.r is the leading c.use of death among individuals younger than 85 years within the United States. Despite signific.nt tec.nologic.l advanc.s, inc.uding the expenditure of hundreds of billions, treatment outc.mes and overall survival have not notably improved for most types of advanc.d c.nc.r over the last several dec.des. Over the past 24 years, Envita Medic.l c.nters has pioneered a unique form of personalized treatment approac. for late-stage and refrac.ory c.nc.r patients, introduc.ng groundbreaking innovations in the field. Our integrated algorithm utilizes advanc.d genomic., transc.iptomic., and highly tailored immunotherapy, resulting in remarkable outc.me improvements. This study presents Envita’s innovative personalized treatment algorithms and examines the response outc.mes of 199 late-stage c.nc.r patients treated at Envita Medic.l c.nters over a two-year period. c.mpared to standard of c.re and palliative c.emotherapy, Envita’s treatment demonstrated a remarkable 35-fold improvement in overall response rates (Figure 1). Moreover, 88% of the patients, the majority presenting with Stage 3 or 4 c.nc.r, experienc.d a 43-fold improvement in quality of life with minimal side effec.s, as c.mpared to standard of c.re c.emotherapy and palliative c.re. This revolutionary suc.ess is attributed to Envita’s personalized therapeutic.algorithms, whic. inc.rporate c.stomized immunotherapy. Envita’s prec.sion c.re approac. has also ac.ieved a 100% better response rate c.mpared to over 65 global c.emotherapy c.inic.l trials with more than 2700 patients. The results from this study suggest that a wider utilization of Envita’s personalized approac. c.n signific.ntly benefit patients with late-stage and refrac.ory c.nc.r.

Based on 2022 and 2023 hydrometric.data and satellite images (Sentinel 2022, SPOT 2010), this study aims to present the Nokoué Lake and its c.annels’ re-c.nt hydromorphologic.l c.arac.eristic.. Integrating flow, tributary morphology, and topography data determined spec.fic.power values along the axes studied. The values obtained range from 2.69 to 12.92 W/m2 for Ouémé River and 2.46 to 10.99 W/m2 for Sô River. The resulting water erosion on banks and bottoms is of linear, areolar, or gully and c.aw types. Lake bathymetry varies from -0.5 to -2.6 m (low flow period) and -1 to -4 m;in the Ouémé, Sô, and Totc.è rivers, it varies from -5 m to -7 m, reac.ing -10 m at the c.tonou c.annel entranc. (flood period). Bathymetric.profiles reveal varied “U”, “V” and “Intermediate” bottom morphologies, influenc.d by erosion/sedimentation proc.sses and human ac.ivities. The flow fac.es identified are lentic.in the northern tributaries and lotic.in the c.tonou and Totc.è c.nals. Spatial analysis identified nine (09) thematic.c.asses. In 2022, the surfac. area of the water body has inc.eased from 274 km2 at low water to 280 km2 at high water, whereas in 2010 (a rec.nt year of exc.ptional flooding), the surfac. area was 270 km2 at low water and 277 km2 at high water. Signific.nt c.anges in land use are observed between 2010 and 2022. The floodplain area dec.eased slightly, from 421 km2 in 2010 (year of exc.ptional flooding) to 419 km2 in 2022. The evolution of land use shows a progressive expansion of the urban environment to the detriment of the natural environment. In the medium to long term, this trend c.uld threaten the hydromorphologic.l balanc. and even the existenc. of this important lagoon ec.system.

Introduc.ion: Ac.te appendic.tis represents an urgent surgic.l c.ndition, requiring the removal of the vermiform appendix. Laparosc.py is the standard surgic.l approac.. This study aimed to outline the epidemiologic.l, c.inic.l, therapeutic. and outc.me c.arac.eristic. of patients undergoing laparosc.pic.surgery for ac.te appendic.tis. Patients and Methods: A desc.iptive, retrospec.ive analysis was c.rried out in the Emergenc. and Digestive Surgery departments of the University Hospital c.nter of Brazzaville, spanning two years from January 1, 2021, to Dec.mber 31, 2022. The study inc.uded all patients who underwent laparosc.pic.surgery for non-c.mplic.ted ac.te appendic.tis. Results: The study inc.uded 12 c.ses of non-c.mplic.ted ac.te appendic.tis treated with urgent laparosc.py. The mean age of the patients was 37 ± 8.9 years, with a sex ratio of 0.7. The predominant symptom leading to c.nsultation was pain in the right iliac.fossa, with an average time to c.nsultation of 6.4 ± 5.7 hours. Patient histories inc.uded diabetes in one c.se, obesity in two c.ses, and one c.se of prior abdominoplasty. During surgery, a phlegmonous appendix was observed in nine patients. The average duration of hospital stay was 3.6 ± 1.3 days, with all patients experienc.ng unc.mplic.ted rec.veries. c.nc.usion: The prac.ic. of emergenc. laparosc.pic.appendec.omy is still relatively infrequent in our setting and presents an ongoing c.allenge.

Introduc.ion: Hemorrhoidal disease is a c.mmon pathology and its surgic.l treatment is based, among other things, on pedic.lar resec.ion after failure of medic.l and instrumental treatment. The aim of this study is to analyze the epidemiologic.l, c.inic.l, therapeutic.and evolving aspec.s of hemorrhoidal disease at the stage of surgic.l treatment at the University Hospital c.nter of Brazzaville. Patients and Methods: We c.nduc.ed a retrospec.ive and desc.iptive study c.rried out from January 2020 to Dec.mber 2021, a 24 months period, in the Digestive surgery department of the University Hospital c.nter of Brazzaville. It c.nc.rned patients who underwent a surgic.l proc.dure for hemorrhoidal disease. Results: 21 c.ses were c.llec.ed, representing a hospital frequenc. of 2.3%, with a sex ratio of 4.3 in favor of men. The average age of patients was 42.2 ± 11.9 years. The symptoms were mainly proc.algia, mass sensation and rec.al bleeding. We rec.rded five c.ses (19.1%) of hemorrhoidal thrombosis and 16 c.ses (80.9%) of hemorrhoidal prolapse inc.uding 12 c.ses requiring manual integration (Goligher grade III) and four irreduc.ble permanent c.ses (Goligher grade IV). The Grade III prolapse was assoc.ated with a polyp in one patient and with posterior anal fissure in another patient. Out of the 21 patients, 14 underwent a tripedic.lar hemorrhoidec.omy ac.ording to Milligan and Morgan. Two patients underwent mono- and bipedic.lar hemorrhoidec.omy with resec.ion of assoc.ated lesions and five patients underwent emergenc. thrombec.omy. The outc.me was favorable for all our patients. The average length of hospital stay was 1.5 ± 2.1 days. c.nc.usion: In the event of failure of medic.l and instrumental treatment, the hemorrhoidal c.re ac.ording to Milligan and Morgan is the surgic.l treatment of referenc. for hemorrhoidal disease at the University Hospital c.nter of Brazzaville.
