Prevalence of historical and replacement brominated flame retardant chemicals in New York City homes

background:Until their phase-out between 2005 and 2013,polybrominated diphenyl ethers(PbDEs)were added to household products including furniture,rugs,and electronics to meet flammability *** brominated flame retardant(bFR)chemicals,including 2-ethylhexyl-2,3,4,5-tetrabromobenzoate(Tbb)and bis(2-ethylhexyl)2,3,4,5-tetrabromophthalate(TbPH),which are components of the Firemaster 550®commercial mixture,are now being used to meet some flammability standards in *** objective of this analysis was to evaluate the extent to which mothers and their children living in New York City are exposed to PbDEs,Tbb,and ***:We measured PbDEs,Tbb,and TbPH using gas chromatography mass spectrometry in dust(n=25)and handwipe(n?11)samples collected between 2012 and 2013 from mothers and children living in New York *** defined dust as enriched if the proportional distribution for a given bFR exceeded two-thirds of the total bFR ***:We detected PbDEs and TbPH in 100%of dust and handwipe samples and Tbb in 100%of dust samples and 95%of handwipe *** from approximately two-thirds of households was enriched for either PbDEs(n?9)or for Tbb t TbPH(n=8).Overall,the median house dust concentration of Tbb+TbPH(1318 ng/g dust)was higher than that of SPentabDE(802 ng/g dust)and bDE-209(1171 ng/g dust).Children generally had higher bFR handwipe concentrations compared to mothers(SPentabDE:73%,bDE-209:64%,Tbb t TbPH:55%)and within households,bFR concentrations from paired maternalchild handwipes were highly *** mothers,we found a significant positive relation between house dust and handwipe bDE-209 and Tbb t TbPH ***:PbDEs,Tbb and TbPH are ubiquitous in house dust and handwipes in a sample of motherchild pairs residing in New York City.

Targeting inflammation to reduce brain injury in growth restricted newborns:a potential treatment?

Introduction： Intrauterine growth restriction （IUGR） is commonly caused by placental insufficiency, resulting in a chronic hypoxic environment and subsequent abnormal fetal development. The developing brain is particularly vulnerable to IUGR conditions. Multiple causal factors associated with brain injury in fetal growth restriction include the timing of placental insufficiency, onset and subsequent severity of fetal compromise, fetal cerebrovascular response and the redistribution of brain blood flow. Although a significant proportion of IUGR infants exhibit adverse long-term neu- rological outcomes, relatively few studies have focused on the mechanisms of brain injury in the IUGR neonate. Clini- cal imaging studies of IUGR infants demonstrate alterations in grey matter and white matter volume and structure （Tolsa et al., 2004; Esteban et al., 2010; Padilla et al., 2015）. Cortical grey matter volume is reduced by up to 28% compared with control infants （Tolsa et al., 2004） and both white and grey matter show structural changes （Esteban et al., 2010）. More than Target 6.3： A Systems Approach to Rethinking Sustainable Development Goals in a Resource-Scarce World

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development outlines 17 individual Sustainable Development Goals （SDGs） that guide the needs of practice for many professional disciplines around the world, including engineering, research, policy, and development. The SDGs represent commitments to reduce poverty, hunger, ill health, gender inequality, environmental degradation, and lack of access to clean water and sanitation. If a typical reductionist approach is employed to address and optimize individual goals, it may lead to a failure in technological, policy, or managerial development interventions through unin- tended consequences in other goals. This study uses a systems approach to understand the fundamental dynamics between the SDGs in order to identify potential synergies and antagonisms. A conceptual system model was constructed to illustrate the causal relationships between SDGs, examine system structures using generic system archetypes, and identify leverage points to effectively influence intentional and minimize unintentional changes in the system. The structure of interactions among the SDGs reflects three archetypes of system behavior： Reinforcing Growth, Limits to Growth, and Growth and Underinvestment. The leverage points identified from the conceptual model are gender equality, sustainable management of water and sanitation, alternative resources, sustainable livelihood standards, and global partnerships. Such a conceptual system analysis of SDGs can enhance the likelihood that the development community will broaden its understanding of the potential synergistic benefits of their projects on resource management, environmental sustainability, and climate change. by linking the interactions and feedbacks of those projects with economic gains, women＇s empowerment, and educational equality, stakeholders can recognize holistic improvements that can be made to the quality of life of many of the world＇s poor.

Epididymosomes are involved in the acquisition of new sperm proteins during epididymal transit

During epididymal transit, spermatozoa acquire new proteins. Some of these newly acquired proteins behave as integral membrane proteins, including glycosylphosphatidylinositol （GPI）-anchored proteins. This suggests that the secreted epididymal proteins are transferred to spermatozoa by an unusual mechanism. Within the epididymal lumen, spermatozoa interact with small membranous vesicles named epididymosomes. Many proteins are associated with epididymosomes and the protein composition of these vesicles varies along the excurrent duct and differs from soluble intraluminal proteins. Some epididymosome-associated proteins have been identified and their functions in sperm maturation hypothesized. These include P25b, a zona pellucida binding protein, macrophage migration inhibitory factor, enzymes of the polyol pathway, HE5/CD52, type 5 glutathione peroxidase, and SPAM 1 or PH-20. The electrophoretic patterns of proteins associated to epididymosomes are complex and some of these proteins are transferred to defined surface domains of epididymal spermatozoa. Epididymosomes collected from different epididymal segments interact differently with spermatozoa. This protein transfer from epididymosomes to spermatozoa is timedependent, temperature-dependent and pH-dependent, and is more efficient in the presence of zinc. Some proteins are segregated to lipid raft domains of epididymosomes and are selectively transferred to raft domains of the sperm plasma membrane. Some evidence is presented showing that epididymosomes are secreted in an apocrine manner by the epididymal epithelial cells. In conclusion, epididymosomes are small membranous vesicles secreted in an apocrine manner in the intraluminal compartment of the epididymis and play a major role in the acquisition of new proteins by the maturing spermatozoa. （Asian J Androl 2007 July; 9： 483-491）

Here we describe the latest findings in this area and clarify the difference between human adult stem cells from menstrual blood and endometrial tissue.

Anthropological analyses of 30 insertion/deletion autosomal markers in five major ethnic groups of Pakistan

We investigated the forensic efficacy of the 30 insertion/deletion(Indel)markers included in the Qiagen Investigator■DIPplex kit in 529 Pakistani individuals from five major subpopulations in Pakistan(Punjabi,Pashtun,Sindhi,Saraiki,and baloch).In the Sindhi population,the distribution of HLD81 and HLD97 alleles deviated from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium after bonferroni *** combined match probability ranged from 2.0E-12(Pashtun and baloch)to 1.0E-12(Sindhi),and the mean paternity exclusion power varied from 0.995(Punjabi,Sindhi,and Saraiki)to 0.996(Pashtun and baloch).The high combined power of discrimination(0.99999999999997)and low combined match probability(1.7E-12)for all subpopulations studied support the utility of the 30 Indel markers for forensic identification in the studied *** allele frequencies of the Indel markers in the Pakistani subpopulations were compared with those from 18 other *** results show that the populations clustered according to *** subpopulations investigated in this work showed a close genetic relationship with others from Pakistan,as well as with South Central Asian and Middle Eastern *** results suggest that the Investigator■DIPplex kit can be useful as a supplementary tool for human identification in the five Pakistani subpopulations investigated in this study.

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted global mobility.‘Lockdowns’and travel bans have been used as control measures by international ***,the ways that we use buildings have also been impacted by these ***,this paper explores the roles of heritage sites in a post-COVID-19 pandemic *** research is part of the Urban Heritage and Community Resilience:Conservation,Tourism,and Pandemic project,and it employs methods such as semistructured interviews,participant observations,archival research,and focus group discussions(FGDs).This paper is based on semistructured interviews conducted with one hundred eighteen participants across ten popular heritage sites in banda Aceh and Aceh besar,*** fndings confrm the debated claim in postdisaster studies asserting that some of these Acehnese heritage sites,especially those imbued with religious values,have become places of ***,during the pandemic,these sites have facilitated community resilience by helping people feel closer to *** practising Acehnese Muslims,prayer at home is culturally acceptable,but praying at the mosque,which is one of the essential heritages of the Acehnese,has contributed to and strengthened the sense of community ***,visitation and participation in heritage sites that include experiencing the sense of place and conducting religious and cultural activities is integral to community resilience.

A comparison of the ballistic behaviour of conventionally sintered and additively manufactured alumina

Production of ceramic armour solutions on-demand/in-theatre would have significant logistical and military ***,even assuming that such technologies could be successfully deployed in the field,such near net-shape manufacturing technology is relatively immature compared to conventional sintering of *** this study,the ballistic performance of a series of additively manufactured(AM)/rapidly-prototyped(RP)alumina tiles of 97.2%of the density of Sintox FATM were investigated using both forward-and reverse-ballistic *** experiments,undertaken with compressed gasguns,employed the depth-of-penetration technique and flash X-ray as primary diagnostics to interrogate both efficiency of penetration and projectile-target interaction,*** RP alumina was found to exhibit useful ballistic properties,successfully defeating steel-cored(AP)7.62×39 mm bXN rounds at velocities of up-to c.a.850 m/s,while exhibiting comparable failure modes to conventionally sintered armour-grade Sintox ***,where aby *** dopant was introduced into the RP material failure modes changed dramatically with performance dropping below that of conventionally sintered ***,the results from both sets of experiments were complimentary and clearly indicated the potential of such RP materials to play an active role in provision of real-world body armour solutions provided quality control of the RP material can be maintained.

Preparation and Control of the Formation of Single Core and Clustered Nanoparticles for biomedical Applications Using a Versatile Amphiphilic Diblock Copolymer

We report the application of a versatile diblock copolymer,poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(γ-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane)(PEO-b-PγMPS),to prepare nanocrystals such as iron oxide nanoparticles or quantum dots,with either a single core or multi-core cluster,for biomedical *** amphiphilic copolymer comprises both a hydrophilic PEO segment and a hydrophobic segment with a“surface anchoring moiety”(the silane group)which can interact effectively with the hydrophobic nanocrystals through ligand *** of the unique features of this work is that we can control the formation of either single core nanoparticles or multi-core nanoclusters by simply varying the conditions of ligand exchange and aging of the mixture of block copolymer and nanoparticles without needing to change the *** morphologies of the resulting single core nanoparticles or multi-core nanoclusters were confirmed by dynamic light scattering and transmission electron *** clustered nanoparticles exhibit enhanced physicochemical properties that are beyond those expected from a simple accumulation of individual ***,the hybrid nanoparticles containing both magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles and optical quantum dots obtained using our strategy provide have combined magnetic and optical functionalities that allow for potential new and expanded biomedical applications,as demonstrated by their use for magnetic resonance imaging and biomarker-targeted cell imaging.
