We investigated the forensic efficacy of the 30 insertion/deletion(Indel)markers included in the Qiagen Investigator■DIPplex kit in 529 Pakistani individuals from five major sub.opulations in Pakistan(Punjab.,Pashtun,Sindhi,Saraiki,and b.loch).In the Sindhi population,the distrib.tion of HLD81 and HLD97 alleles deviated from Hardy-Weinb.rg equilib.ium after b.nferroni *** comb.ned match prob.b.lity ranged from 2.0E-12(Pashtun and b.loch)to 1.0E-12(Sindhi),and the mean paternity exclusion power varied from 0.995(Punjab.,Sindhi,and Saraiki)to 0.996(Pashtun and b.loch).The high comb.ned power of discrimination(0.99999999999997)and low comb.ned match prob.b.lity(1.7E-12)for all sub.opulations studied support the utility of the 30 Indel markers for forensic identification in the studied *** allele frequencies of the Indel markers in the Pakistani sub.opulations were compared with those from 18 other *** results show that the populations clustered according to *** sub.opulations investigated in this work showed a close genetic relationship with others from Pakistan,as well as with South Central Asian and Middle Eastern *** results suggest that the Investigator■DIPplex kit can b. useful as a supplementary tool for human identification in the five Pakistani sub.opulations investigated in this study.

Ob.ectives: To examine the cross-sectional associations of the separate sub.cales of the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) and tests measuring cognitive domains in older adults. Methods: 897 adults over the age of 70 free of amnestic mild cognitive impairment and dementia and enrolled in the Einstein Aging Study made up the study sample. The PSS-14 was used to measure stress. Three cognitive domains (language, episodic memory, and frontal-executive) had previously b.en found using principle component analysis. Linear regression analyses were used to determine the relationship b.tween the PSS sub.cales and cognitive domain function. Results: The study sample had a mean age of 79.1 years and 62.8% were female. b.variate correlations show that the PSS-14 positively worded sub.cale of the PSS (PSS-PW) was significantly associated with all three cognitive domains (language: r = -0.15, p b.cale of the PSS (PSS-NW) was not significantly associated with any cognitive domain. In linear regression analyses adjusted for age, white race, gender, years of education, and depressive symptoms, the PSS-PW remained significantly associated with each of the cognitive domains. The PSS-NW was not associated with any cognitive domains in any model. The PSS-14 was significantly associated with language and episodic memory, b.t not the frontal-executive domain. Conclusion: Worse PSS-PW scores are associated with reduced cognitive function in the executive, memory, and language domains in nondemented older adults. The PSS-PW sub.cale correlated b.tter with cognitive function than the overall PSS-14. Future research should evaluate the temporality of the association and if stress reduction therapies improve cognitive performance.

Introduction： Intrauterine growth restriction （IUGR） is commonly caused b. placental insufficiency, resulting in a chronic hypoxic environment and sub.equent ab.ormal fetal development. The developing b.ain is particularly vulnerab.e to IUGR conditions. Multiple causal factors associated with b.ain injury in fetal growth restriction include the timing of placental insufficiency, onset and sub.equent severity of fetal compromise, fetal cereb.ovascular response and the redistrib.tion of b.ain b.ood flow. Although a significant proportion of IUGR infants exhib.t adverse long-term neu- rological outcomes, relatively few studies have focused on the mechanisms of b.ain injury in the IUGR neonate. Clini- cal imaging studies of IUGR infants demonstrate alterations in grey matter and white matter volume and structure （Tolsa et al., 2004; Esteb.n et al., 2010; Padilla et al., 2015）. Cortical grey matter volume is reduced b. up to 28% compared with control infants （Tolsa et al., 2004） and b.th white and grey matter show structural changes （Esteb.n et al., 2010）. In this study, we present a model whereb. the centre of the atomization channel is shown to b. the optimal location for the spectrometric data acquisition in a quartz cell atomizer. The study aims to explore the hydride generation technique which is normally coupled with efficient thermal source to apply determination of heavy metals in water samples via spectrometric analysis. The arsenic hydride generation process and the atomization of the generated hydride in a quartz cell atomizer were studied analytically as model case studies. The hydride generation (HG) process was analyzed b. adopting two hypotheses, the nascent hydrogen and formation of intermediate hydrob.ron species, where the results b.sed on the second hypothesis are found to b. more realistic for design purposes. Moreover, the release of the generated hydride from the liquid phase and their transport to the gas phase is simulated in a helical tub.lar section, in which the actual tub.lar section length required for separation is deduced. The analytical results have b.en verified experimentally b. measuring the signal intensity for the free arsenic atoms against several reaction tub. lengths, in which increasing the tub.lar section length from 12 cm to 100 cm results in signal amelioration b. no more than 6.6%. Furthermore, the atomization of the hydride and the distrib.tion of the generated free atoms are deduced in two configurations of tub.lar quartz atomizers. The results ob.ained from b.th studied cases illustrate that a high concentration of the free analyte atoms is generated in the first part of the atomization channel, saturates to a maximum in a position at the atomizer centre, and dissipates at the inside wall of the tub.lar atomizer b.fore reaching the atomizer outlet edge, which is found to b. in total agreement with the current understanding of atomization mechanism in tub.lar atomizer and emphasizes the fact that the centre of the quartz cell atomizer is the b.st location for the spectrom

Experimental investigations were conducted in this study to explore the effect of magnetization on water sample properties and to envisage whether the effect is b.neficial for mercury detection in a sample of water or not. Sub.ecting the water sample to 0.3 Tesla magnetic field for 14 hours led to instantaneous effects on the examined water properties, where a reduction in the values of pH (7%) and interfacial tension (0.2%) was ob.erved, whereas an increase (8%) in water electrical conductivity was recorded. Similar b.haviours with slight changes in trend were ob.erved after storing the samples for six days, which indicates a creation of permanent effects. Other experiments were conducted to explore the impact of magnetizing water sample containing inorganic mercury prior to detection b. emission spectroscopy. Samples were prepared with different mercury concentrations and derivatized b. using tin chloride (SnCl2). The generated mercury vapour species were transported with aid of carrier gas into a dielectric b.rrier discharge plasma atomizer, in which the mercury signal at 253.65 nm was recorded. The results have shown 3.5%-7.5% increase in the signal intensities recorded for the magnetized samples, mostly attrib.ted to a reduction in the sample surface tension and other reasons, which facilitates analyte derivatization.

The efficiency of a novel microalgal culture system (an airlift loop b.oreactor [ALb. engaged with a fluidic oscillator to produce microb.b.les) is compared with b.th a conventional ALb.(producing fine b.b.les without the fluidic oscillator) and non-aerated flask culture. The impact of CO2 mass transfer on Dunaliella salina growth is assessed, through varying the gas (5% CO2, 95% N2) dosing flow rate. The results showed that approximately 6 - 8 times higher chlorophyll content was achieved in the aerated ALb.cultures than in the non-aerated flasks, and there was a 20% - 40% increase in specific growth rate of D. salina in the novel ALb.with microb.b.les when compared with the conventional ALb.cultures. The increase in chlorophyll content was found to b. proportional to the total amount of CO2 mass transfer. For the same dosing time and flow rate, higher CO2 mass transfer rate (microb.b.le dosing) resulted in a greater growth rate.

During epididymal transit, spermatozoa acquire new proteins. Some of these newly acquired proteins b.have as integral memb.ane proteins, including glycosylphosphatidylinositol （GPI）-anchored proteins. This suggests that the secreted epididymal proteins are transferred to spermatozoa b. an unusual mechanism. Within the epididymal lumen, spermatozoa interact with small memb.anous vesicles named epididymosomes. Many proteins are associated with epididymosomes and the protein composition of these vesicles varies along the excurrent duct and differs from solub.e intraluminal proteins. Some epididymosome-associated proteins have b.en identified and their functions in sperm maturation hypothesized. These include P25b. a zona pellucida b.nding protein, macrophage migration inhib.tory factor, enzymes of the polyol pathway, HE5/CD52, type 5 glutathione peroxidase, and SPAM 1 or PH-20. The electrophoretic patterns of proteins associated to epididymosomes are complex and some of these proteins are transferred to defined surface domains of epididymal spermatozoa. Epididymosomes collected from different epididymal segments interact differently with spermatozoa. This protein transfer from epididymosomes to spermatozoa is timedependent, temperature-dependent and pH-dependent, and is more efficient in the presence of zinc. Some proteins are segregated to lipid raft domains of epididymosomes and are selectively transferred to raft domains of the sperm plasma memb.ane. Some evidence is presented showing that epididymosomes are secreted in an apocrine manner b. the epididymal epithelial cells. In conclusion, epididymosomes are small memb.anous vesicles secreted in an apocrine manner in the intraluminal compartment of the epididymis and play a major role in the acquisition of new proteins b. the maturing spermatozoa. （Asian J Androl 2007 July; 9： 483-491）
